rows upon rows

I have all the blocks for almost amish from Jos country junction here. in rows.

And I have started to assemble the top. It is slow going for me, as I am angularly challenged. There is a graph in the book I am following. I can get the angle wrong while looking right at it. All I have to do is look at the pieces and they thread. I will need to spend a lot of time with a lint brush.

to do: count

I cut this Bonnie hunter quilt out in 2017 after her book came out -addicted to scraps. There were a lot of pieces to cut. I have used Carolina chain as a back up project when I go to a sewing event. In case, my main project gets too tedious or finished before I want to go home, I pull these mindless pieces out and sew on them.  I kept kits in baggies, and, the baggies are, finally, starting to empty. It is time to count and re cut missing or mismatched blocks. These are the dark centers, I still have many light centers to go.

I think I have 136 and I need 154. One benefit of having so many UFOs is the fun of revisiting fabrics from another time. All of the pieces came from the 2 inch scraps in 2017.

blocks done

I have been chasing this project since last week. I have all the blocks done for almost amish from Jos country junction here. Once I finished 2 colors of blocks, I just couldn't stop. I now have all 7 colors made, and can start assembling the top.

The start is here. And the other blocks are here.

postage stamp blocks

I have some interesting greens this month for the psp 20/21 blocks and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I'm not sure the photos look as green as they are in person.

It doesn't look like I will have a finish for March from my green ufo list, but, I did move Christmas sparkle along to almost a top. I did decide to make and add 3 more blocks to the quilt. I haven't worked on the green brackets for full stop quilt that Angela is doing. And I didn't get the table runner quilted.

crossed top

I have a top  for crossed strings. It was such an adventure building the blocks, putting the blocks together, and discovering a top. I think at this point, I will call it done and make a back and binding. I was hoping to have a nice day to take photos, but, no.

It was windy and no sunshine. I think the quilt has more color in real life, but, I like the weave. I still have a whole basket of strings.

country roads top

I found crocus blooming and rhubarb is peeking it's head out of the ground

I added a 2 1/2 inch border to my country roads quilt. I finished the top at the last retreat. It was part of the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy for the last two years. I made the blocks in each month's color.

I needed a 97 x97 back, so, it was time to use a wide backing that I bought during a backing sale at joann fabrics. I chose more yellow for the binding and this quilt now lives in the " to be quilted" closet with many other friends. It seems like just yesterday, it was a newborn quilt awwww

I shared the restart of an old ufo that has me in it's hypnotic power. I made all the blocks I will need for 2 of the 7 colors. So, far, each step has made me want to do "just " a little more. Now, that 2 colors are done, I might as well make one more.

and so it goes...

to do: make progress

Daffodils are blooming and I have seen blue skies. I am really looking forward to Spring this year. I hope to out more and working on building back relationships. Although, I have almost forgotten how to be social.
I've had a chance to make more blocks for quilted twins free pattern called swingin checkerboard. It is a project that I am just adding to as time permits.

more blocks

I am trying to take stock on the leader/ ender challenge quilt easy breezy. I am not sure why I haven't made much progress, or what I need to do to change that.

I need to cut more pieces for easy breezy. I need the neutral pieces. I have plenty of squares.

a new old project

Shhh I am not really working on this project. It is not on the list for the month.. or the year..

It was part of the huge reorganization of ufo projects. I felt sorry for it. I knew it would not get picked as the top ten projects for many years to come. It would just sit there, looking sad every time, that it was not chosen. And, all I would have to do is sew a few 2 1/2 inch strips together, that are already cut.

This is a quilt called almost amish from Jos country junction here. Sewing the strips together was quick and easy, so enough and done.

Well, not exactly. It wouldn't hurt to just subcut a few sets called for in the pattern.

done? um.. I could just iron...

blocks of green

I used most of my green 2 1/2 inch squares to make 16 patch blocks for the Debby Brown color blocks quilt along for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I think I have 3 left. It makes me nervous, and, so, I have to resist the urge to randomly cut more, so, I will have "enough"

I found this free quilt along with Debby Brown  from Alycia at quilty girl. I had started making postage stamps last year for the rsc. and once the gate was opened, I enjoy making 16 patches as well.

Here are the pink squares

here are the yellow squares

I am still working on my green ufo for March Christmas sparkle   a free pattern found here

I thought I would have a top yesterday, but, my quilting buddies think I need to add a row. what do you think? it is 71 inches square now. I admit I like a rectangle quilt, too, but, a Christmas quilt is more likely used as a lap quilt right? Although, I use a Christmas quilt on my bed for a couple of months each year.

crossed strings

Making the longer pieces for crossed strings, although challenging to find long enough pieces, is straightforward. sewing and cutting the side pieces takes a bit longer. I was aiming for 48 blocks. Once again, string piecing makes a mess. I grab a handful, and see if I can pull pieces to use out of the pile.

After the piece is made and white was added, I still needed to cut it in half.

Of course, the best part is seeing all the block variations with all the different leftover bits and pieces from other projects.

progress

Sometimes, I forget to show the slow progress of some on going projects. I have sew days that don't seem to make any dents in the quilt making process. But, I know they do. And that has to be enough.

I am still hunting for old projects as I am trying to reorganize and label boxes, it consumes me. I have been very creative at storage, I must say.

Maple syrup is done. Hubby has it all put away for another year. It was my first year to trek around the trees and help with the buckets of sap, I enjoyed it cold and all. I usually just watch and make the pancakes.

to do: sparkle

My Friday group met and I worked on Christmas sparkle UFO .  The instructions had me making corner pieces for each of the 9 blocks. I think the block using just these pieces would be great as well.

I was looking forward to trying a block to see what it would look like. I was surprised at how big it was.

These blocks are huge 24 - 25 inches and there are only 9 of them. I used Christmas fabrics, but, I think I would like it with shirt fabrics.

crossed strings

I mentioned that my crumby stars had me playing in the strings again. I saw this great idea on Cathy's blog and I had to try it. I started making the long string pieces for the center, but, I couldn't wait to try with the shorter side pieces. Now, I was using mostly crumb pieces, and, I had to piece some strips from shorter pieces to be long enough. I tried eliminating any piece I picked from the basket, either by using in this project, or, sewing them together in another way.

crossed strings

I am a big fan of crumby piecing, and using the most unwanted pieces. I really like the scrappiness of these kinds of quilts, and how completely different each one is. Cathy's quilt seems to have a lot of pink in hers, but, mine, does not. The mystery is fun.

will be the side pieces

Truth be told, I didn't need to start another quilt. Yet, here I am having fun in the strings. I will say there is no hurry to finish, but, we will see just how long I can wait.

stash report March 14, 2021

I haven't added any new fabric this week. I have been reminding myself, successfully, that I have scraps in a scrap bucket that need to be tended. And, if I cut them, there has to be room to put them.

Stash report  March 14, 2021

Fabric Used this week: 0 yards - no finishes

Fabric Used year to Date: 46 1/2 yards

Fabric Added this week: 0 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 50 1/2 yards

net fabric: 4 yards bought more than used

I stitched at least 15 minutes every day this week.

I had some questions about rug hooking. SO, I thought I would share a bit.

My favorite tools that I use all the time. are slanted scissors, a bent hook primitive( larger) and wool, and linen. With Mr Scarecrow, I do not have a previous finished picture to go by with colors or shading. It was a new pattern to the designer, and, I liked it well enough to buy it.
The pattern is just the basic shapes. I am working on a tall pumpkin with only the outside drawn in. I wanted to add a few light shaping rows.
Rug hooking is very forgiving. If I don't like what I do, I can quickly pull it out and do something else.
It is not like quilting and a seam ripper.

black lines are the pattern

For this project, I am using an 8 cut of wool, which is 1/4 inch. Wool cuts so nicely, and, I have a cutter with several sizes. I will hold the wool strip in my left hand over my index finger. And that hand will go under the piece on the frame. I can't see it, so, I go by feel.

With my right hand, I will use the  hook to go through a hole in the linen, touch my finger to find the wool, and pull a loop of wool to the top. The loop should be as high as the wool is wide. But, I like mine shorter.

crumby green

I make the tiny houses from 2 inch scraps for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. This is my second year making them. It will take several years, apparently, to make enough to use in a quilt. They are, after all, tiny.

I make the crumb stars from strings and crumbs, and the 2 1/2 inch strip bin for the   HSTS - ( half square triangles ). This is a new rainbow project this year. And a great excuse to play in the strings, which has ignited a flurry of string quilt starts.
