lucky star

I taught a mini workshop, last Saturday, for the guild on quick and easy star tips. I have been making lucky star in the color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge. There were 6 making the stars with me, and, I showed them how I was going to sash mine. pretty easy. I have used a layer cake of batiks for my stars, and, I am using an older kaffe jelly roll for the sashings, I had made the monthly stars with 25 blocks in mind. I prefer rectangle quilts, so, I decided to add 5 more and then I will be ready to assemble the top.

one monthly goal finish

I have finished my wensleydale quilt- a jen kingwell pattern. It is my one monthly goal for September, and, one of  my 5 quilts  project. I plucked it out of my Ufo closet in March. I started cutting again in April. I made a few blocks in May.  I made more blocks in June. All the blocks were done in July, and, I started putting them together in August.

teasing some progress

All the flying geese are done for strip tease pattern. I am ready for assembly. My quilting buddy has hers ready for quilting, so, I am behind. This is a truly scrappy quilt using 2 inch strips and pieces. I made the 4 patches along with the colors of the rainbow scrap challenge this year.  It is one of my 5 quilts projects. There are 9 vertical rows of flying geese and 10 vertical rows of 4 patches.

My finger is doing much better. The longarm needle went through the middle of the nail. The nail has grown out, so, I am not as worried about catching it and ripping it.

I lost my domain name for the blog,  and everything has to be changed on my blog. ugh   It's probably a good thing. I have had it since 2013 and every year, the price increases. I am now: makingalather.blogspot.com

mini churn dash block

I am excited to add a new UFo to my 5 quilt project. I made these cute little churn dashes in 2017. At some point, I retired the whole project to the ufo closet. I used a random number generator to pick my next project for the list, to replace a finished Ufo (unfinished object), and mini churndashes was it. The plan was to make a quilt with whatever number of blocks I found in the box. I had a possible layout idea in the box, too.  When I counted them, I fell in love with them all over again. They are so very cute and fun to make.

I had 78 of them, which, isn't a big quilt. I decided I would be patient in finishing, and, make a few more. I even thought of making them by color for the 2024 rainbow scrap challenge. But, I decided on a more short term goal, and, then, I can reevaluate. I am making one every morning, until the end of the year. That will add at least 90 more to the number.

78 blocks in the box

practice - 3 inch finished

week 1

I don't keep 1 inch strips, generally, adding them to the string and crumb bin. So, I can dig through the end of the line scraps for fun combos. I can cut the HSTS from 1 1/2 inch strips with the easy angle. This is going to be a bright spot every morning.

stash report September 24, 2023

I am really. really trying to keep more fabric out of the house.... really

But, I attended a quilt show last week, and there was this very big bag of scraps for only two dollars, and my hubby, said " you need this" what could I do?  It was like he had showed me the cutest little puppy or kitty, and, I just had to rescue it. I had to do it. I promise, I will feed it, and, take it out for a walk, and, be very responsible. I will

The rug pattern is called Christmas in new England by Old tattered flag. It is meant to be a tree skirt, but I am changing it to just a circular rug. SO, on dasher and dancer.
I have many shades of dark blue to use for the background.

It was fun to see an overall view while I had it off the frame.

spoolin around

I lost my domain name for the blog,  and everything has to be changed on my blog. ugh   It's probably a good thing. I have had it since 2013 and every year, the price increases. I am now: makingalather.blogspot.com

I have the spool center done for my 5 quilt project - Spoolin around by Bonnie Hunter. Making 3 inch finished spools was the 2012 leader ender challenge at Quiltville.  Later, she made the quilt and added it to her book more adventures with leaders and enders. It's time for borders.

I decided when she announced this year's challenge, I would finish an old challenge ufo quilt, instead. I did this last year, too. I finished dotty bow ties from 2011 in January 2023. I realized, that I have started them all, but, have few finishes. imagine that    But.... I like this year's challenge...

I laid the hollow nine blocks out on the floor, and, rearranged them a million times. This is where I stopped. I will finish the last row, and, then, make the sashing strips to join the rows together. I am making progress. This is my RSC project for this year. Each month, I have made 3 in each color as it was picked. I have all 25 done.

3 1/2 inch squares
I made 4 patches for strip tease.

I have finishes that are exciting, and, I have a few more getting ready. Working on 5 quilts at a time, isn't fast, but, overtime, I chip away at these worthy projects.

stash report September 17, 2023

I attended a quilt show in Lafayette last week and bought some flannel for donation quilts at 2.00 per yard. I was thinking of the trip around the world quilt I made earlier this year. I didn't take any quilt pictures. oh well

The reindeer are finished. I started the background in the center of the rug. Once I hook around each reindeer, I can clean up the tails of wool. My finger is much better, but still, doesn't like being bumped.

oops I missed a reindeer tail

hollow nine and sashing

I have time with my rainbow scrap challenge sewing, this month, to start assembly for my hollow nine quilt. I decided I wanted to cut a 2 inch strip for each of the sashings. I have 27 blocks, and my goal was 25, so I am good to go. I was able to add sashings to all the blocks at my Friday sew. They are such colorful blocks. I really like them together.

I put 2 rows together and then, thought, I better lay them all out, and, decide on color placement, before I move on with more rows. I will do that next week. I am just happy to have moved it along.

irish chain finish

Triple irish chain is now a finished UFO quilt from my 5 quilt project. I started this in 2012. The top just needed borders in 2017, and, then, has waited it's turn on the longarm. I really like 30's prints and colors. I think that is what drew me back into quilting. Around here, 30s quilts were mostly what we could find at antique stores.  When I was a young quilter, I admired the work and dedication to make quilts during such a difficult time period.

84 x104 = 24 yards

I used a wide flannel backing and swirls for the quilting. The binding shows the border print better than the photos.

snails trail again

Oh, how I love making these. They are just a project that I keep for comfort and happiness sewing. Someday, there will be a quilt. But, for now, I just love making these.

As we traveled to 2 great quilt shows last week, I noticed our lovely Indiana farmland. I live in a flat portion of Indiana, I sure think it pretty every season of the year. On the way to Lafayette, there are more rolling fields with corn ready to harvest. We saw amber waves of corn. How nice....

spoolin around progress

All of the spool blocks are restitched, and, I am ready to officially begin the assembly of the quilt. This is an exciting part of quilting. Making an on point quilt one row at a time, is very satisfying....until the center haha. There is seam matching every three inches.
