orange scrap projects week 4

Every month, every new color, in the rainbow scrap challenge. becomes my favorite block for my square dance quilt.

I made some twosies zig zag quilt blocks using the color orange. Each month, there are less options for combining them.

I had some really great orange charm squares for making rolling windmills. Making these each month, is not my usual choices for fabrics and combos. I am enjoying thinking outside the box..... literally. After all, the charm squares are in a box tee hee.

I decided I had enough variety of colors sewn in twosies to make a few orange sets of strip sets for stashbuster. I need to make 2 different strip sets to make the checkerboard.

set 2

In the background, I am making little bits of progress for ditch lilies. It will take awhile to make 640 -1 1/2 in hsts.

stash report May 17, 2026

I have been sewing the shorter 2 1/2 inch strips with a neutral for the rainbow scrap challenge. I still have a few colors to go. I decided to make them into 5 strips with a checkerboard block in mind. I am using scrappy pieces in the color of the month.

I have started prepping for block 11. These are smaller blocks that will fit to join all the blocks. There are a lot of trees in this quilt. This is a small strip with 2 trees vertical.

orange scrap projects week 3

I made some progress on ditch lilies. It was fun to see what the bear claw was going to look like with 1 1/2 inch hsts and a 2 1/2 inch square. My hands are not as nimble as they used to be. I made 12  and I need 160. I have almost used all the 1 1/2 inch hsts I had made. I need 640. I will definitely need more.

oh so cute

I had made a few strip sets earlier and I cut 24 sets of 4 of the same fabric for each strip set. I need 40.

I finished the chain blocks for candy chains. I had several pale orange strips that I decided to use, because they have been in the 2 1/2 inch scrap bag too long.

The 16 patches of 2 inch squares are ready to become square dance blocks in happy orange.

stash report May 10 , 2026

Happy Mother's day. I have a tshirt that reads I am a quilting Grandma, just like other Grandmas only cooler

I was looking for a back for my red and brown pfeffernuesse quilt top. I have a scientific method for choosing. Step 1 - look through everything I have and decide nothing is nice enough. And say that with all the fabric I have, how could it be there isn't anything. Step 2- think - I want to go the a fabric store and find something special. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I rarely find anything if I do. Step 3 - Stop being picky -It is the back after all. And I find something in my hoards of fabric that will be good enough.  Step 4- When the quilt is done... I will like it better than I thought I would.

In this case I found a hunk of red and a hunk of brown that I can sew together that will be big enough to use. Now, it is back to business.

orange scrap projects week 2

Orange is the color for the month of May and for the rainbow scrap challenge.  I am catching up with the red month and the candy chains. I missed several months the first part of the year.

I made square play blocks in orange. I enjoy making these. I haven't done anything with my box of 4 1/2 inch squares in a very long time.

I sewed the orange to the neutrals for my stashbuster quilt. I really is time to sew them into 4ths, but, I have a few too many projects.

And I found orange charm squares for rolling windmills.

I looked at the directions for ditch lilies again, and, realized I had missed cutting these orange squares. Now, I think I have finished cutting for the Bonnie Hunter quilt, but, I may have missed something, yet again.

5 quilt May, 8, 2026

last report December 26, 2025

It has been awhile since my last report of the 5 quilt project. Matter of fact, I completely forgot about it while in Florida.

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

I have 32 quilts this year that are in the running for time at the sewing machine. In 2024, I finished 41. It was a miracle. In 2025, I finished 14. I don't know what the difference was. I do know the 5 quilt project has been a true help in overcoming overwhelm and procrastination. But, some quilts take longer than others.  The first mention I found of the 5 quilts was in October 2021. I remember, I was talking with quilty friends and mentioned I was overwhelmed with the shear number of ufos and quilts I want to make. A friend said, maybe if you just focus on a small number of quilts at a time.... And tada, the sun came out and everything was unicorns and rainbows. It has helped me remain active in my favorite sport ( quilting)

Making a report every month may be boring, But it keeps my mind focused. I will try to stay up to date with that. That is why I have decided to bring it back for me in 2026. I am a little late getting started.

hollow nine - rainbow scrap challenge from 2023 that needs the border appliqued. I have cut the flowers and the stem is ready. I just need to attach. This is still on the list for 2026, but, I haven't worked on it lately.

red and brown pfeffernuesse quilt- I discovered a couple blocks turned wrong and had to rip them out and turn them. But, we are back on track, after I resew. It will be ready to quilt. I plan on that next Spring. It will be a top priority in 2026. It is on the frame ready to be quilted.

dresden blocks - I have all the plates machine appliqued and have started to hand sew the center medalions. I have one done.

stars 2 bits - I have had the star blocks for a few years, but, still need to add borders to the blocks

Editya Sitar baskets - I have just a bit started before I dropped the ball.

scrap cutting

I have added another goal to the 5 quilts project. I want to take one day a month and cut scraps. I will have plenty to choose from since I really didn't cut any for 2024, and the bags of uncut scraps are piling up, all over the fabric room.  Last year, the total was 36 1/2 yards of useable fabric.
And I plan on continuing this in 2026, even though, I see no discernable difference in the scrap piles.

quilts to be quilted:

1. wedding ring I have had this ready for a few years, but, I am afraid to quilt it myself. I want it to be special and I don't do special. So I will work to talk my self into it..... some day That didn't happen in
2025

2. pfeffernusse

3. blue skies

4 yellow string baby quilt
