week 4 yellow scraps

Thanks to Sara, I realized I forgot the quiltville leader/ender challenge this year.  It's called tulip swirl. I made a few in yellow for the month of August. I don't really have room for another block idea. But, I do have smaller 2 1/2 inch strips that I could use and see them disappear.

I made the 9 patch chaining blocks for candy chains. I have purple to go.

I was a little bold in my choices for backgrounds for rolling windmills.

square dance is finished for August. This yellow is very bright.

All the sashing pieces are done for stack and whack leaves. I am ready for borders.

the last tree

I decided I wanted to try a crochet technique to finish the rug's edge. I prepared the  linen by turning and sewing the linen to a 1/2 inch. I cut the strips of a navy wool and gave it a try. It was a challenge, until I found the right hook size that could do the job. I realized I didn't like a navy wool, it was too dark. So, I pulled it out and decided I would use my handmade navy wool from the background.

yellow scraps week 3

I am adding sashing to my stack and whack leaves . I usually will do anything to avoid sashing, ( I find it tedious), but these blocks need something in between them.

I like candy chains in yellow. I still have the 9 patch chaining blocks to do.

My 2 1/2 squares drawer is 60 squares lighter after adding borders to square play

While I was piecing the borders for square play, I grabbed my 2 inch drawer of  squares to make 16 patches for square dance.

stash report August 9, 2026

Next to my accucut is a small table. After I cut, I tend to pile the remnants on this poor little table. I decided it was absolutely time yo clean it. Some pieces were small, some were big. I made a stack of the prints and a box of the whites. The table looks so much better.

I need to decide how I will finish the rug I have a book I bought at Sauder last year during rug hooking week. That has instructions for a wool crochet binding. Since, it is a small rug, I think I want to try it and see if I like it.  I have zig zaged the edges and trimmed the excess linen.

yellow scraps week 2

I was able to start assembly of stack and whack leaves . I started it in 2012. It was on my ''I don't need to finish this '' list. But, I saw the colors in my project box closet, and checked how much it would take to finish it. It was doable. Interesting fabrics younger me picked.

I was tempted to just sew the purple  candy chains  I had cut, thinking it was going to be a purple month.

Again, I had already cut for purple, but, I really like yellow square play blocks.

While I was cutting rolling windmills, I pulled out shorter pieces for my stashbuster quilt. And, then, I cut a few sets that I pieced.

I even cut for rolling windmills.

stash report August 2, 2026

I have a laundry basket under my ironing board where I trim quilts before binding. It has been overflowing for some time. It was time to fold and sort. The scraps are long, and sometimes wide. They weighed nearly 7 pounds. That would be 21 yards of useable fabric. But, backings are generally not that lovely.  Do I really need them? What to do. I think I might pre- make bindings.

I dyed a new navy piece of wool to use as the background, and, I like it much better. My hubby wanted to hook the background and did a great job.

I need to decide how I will finish it. I have a book I bought at Sauder last year during rug hooking week. That has instructions for a wool crochet binding. Since, it is a small rug, I think I want to try it and see if I like it.

A fall project

I am not certain yet which color will be for the rainbow scrap challenge in August. I decided to hedge my bet, with an older ufo that will have both purple and yellow, which are the two missing colors this year. I think there was a clue in last weeks rsc post, but, I may be wrong. If so, I can pivot. If not, it's not like I don't have plenty of scraps in either color.

I took a guild workshop in 2012 with one of our guild's founding members. We made leaves using a stack and whack method. Over the years I have made bits and pieces of progress. This time, I realized, all I need is to assemble the top. And, it is topical for this time of year.

No matter the color announced tomorrow, I have broken my hesitation for assembling my rsc project for zig zag quilt  It's just a start. But the start was the hardest part to make myself do. I stared at the picture a long while. It's an on-point layout and the blocks are 2 1/2 inches unfinished.

I cut candy chains  in purple. I will need them some time, anyway.

I chose 3 - 4 1/2 inch squares for square play and made the 2 1/2 inch square borders. I didn't have many purple fabrics in my 4 1/2 inch bin. I will need these pieces eventually this year.
