5 quilt report January 31, 2024

 Last report January 3, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. My top priority this year are the quilts in the to be quilted closet.

I finished 3 ufos in January. I feel like I keep showing the same finishes too many times. But, I want to end the month of January, and, start planning the month of February.

I wanted to finish 2 quilts In the 'to be quilted closet' before I did any other UFOs. I finished....

1. too many circles -  finished too many circles

2. carolina chain is finished. But, the weather has not cooperated with photos.

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

3. assembling rick rack nines was my One monthly goal for january. I made the goal and added it to the quilting list. This will be my February One monthly goal to have a finished quilt.

4. portage lake block of the month - open the box - I really really like this kit and quilt. But, I wonder if it is more than I want to do right now.

5. mini churndashes  - assemble -I have found the 6 inch churndashes that I planned to use in  the quilt I want to make. I am excited to combine 2 older ufos into one top. I have started the trimming, and, I have sewn a few twosies. It will be one of my regular piecing projects for social sewing and open sews in February.

February quilts to be quilted from the closet -top priority

I have a customer quilt on the frame now, but, soon...

1. falling charms

2. peek a boo bunnies

fun for the season

ufo projects for February

3. glitter - I worked a little with these blocks in January, and, will make them a part of my regular piecing projects in February. I have them all in twosies and a row together. There is a lot of seam matching.

4. churn dashes

5. split 9 patch -This is new for February. I will open the box and see where this older Ufo  is in the assembly stages. I am pretty sure all the blocks were finished as leader and enders in 2013. I have 245 of them.

next on the longarm

1. rick rack nines

customer pause

2. show off

3. faux table runner

4. scrappy log cabin

5. lucky stars

rick rack nines top

My one monthly goal for January was to make a quilt top from 290 nine patches. I did accomplish this goal. Somehow, I don't have the finished photo. This is the last one, before, I sewed the center seam.

I added the borders from my stash and made a back and binding for this rick rack nines quilt. I haven't decided if I am adding it to the 'to be quilted closet' or adding it after a customer quilt.

It is time to check my PHD goals for January as well. I finished 3 UFOs. I have a page at the top of the blog for 2024 finishes.  I have one new start which is a valentine layer cake quilt here.

stash report January 28, 2024

I picked up a few pieces of scraps from the guild free table. Then, I put half of it back. LOL. The pieces I kept were small pieces that I am not going to count in the stash totals, but, there were enough 2 1/2 inch strips I will count as a jelly roll.

fabric added this week:  3  yards

 Still no purchases. yippee

fabric added year to date for 2024: 3 yards

fabric used:  -  0 yards
fabric used year to date for 2024: 63 yards

60  yards used more than bought in 2024

I sewed 6 days last week.  I am doing better with my sewing time. I have been doing a little clean up while I am in the quilt room and that is helping with me wanting to be there.

I decided to work a little harder on my attendance at my rug hooking guild meetings. I miss everyone. My goal is 2 times a month. I have also decided that I will only work on my Christmas rug there, and, not at home.

More work on the reindeers and background. Guild was canceled one day this month. In all the years, it was the first time I can remember. We are getting a little older, and not as interested in slushing through the nasty weather. LOL I promise that these are new pictures but progress is slow. LOL

applique and hen and chicks

I appliqued the green tree this month for the rainbow scrap challenge applique project - across the wide missourri. I do not have  much applique experience. So, it's a good thing that the quilt is supposed to look primitive. haha Once I started, It didn't take as long as I expected. I was planning on adding more pieces to the block, but, was side tracked. I re- started my hexie project and that has been my priority for handwork. I am very happy with adding at least something to this older ufo.

I enjoyed making hen and chicks for the new scrappy  QAL. This is going to be fun. Angela is bordering her small blocks hmm undecided.

tile block top

I had found a tutorial for the antique tile block using charm squares at Suzies Scraps. It uses charm squares sewn together, and, then, cut to make an old classic block. And, I had some bright charm squares I wanted to move out of my stash. I added the unfinished blocks to my 5 quilt project in December. I added the piano key border this month and, now, it is ready for quilting. It will wait it's turn on the longarm.

rick rack nines progress

I had an open sew with my guild Saturday, and, I have made progress on rick rack nines. Having a top is my January one monthly goal. I am almost there. The middle rows are daunting. The pattern was a king size quilt, and, I didn't realize that when I made the 9 patches. When I began working on it again, I wanted to make it smaller. But, it is still bigger than I thought it would be. I have enough leftover 9 patches to make another quilt.

hexie quilt goal

As an extra quilting goal, I have decided to take my longtime hexie quilt, and, leave it out, until, it is done. Over the years, I have worked on it from time to time, and, then, it gets set aside for more pressing projects and life. I have 1 1 /2 sides to go, and, I think it is time to stick to it, until, it is finished. At this point, it needs to be spread out to work on the bits and pieces to even out the sides. It is big enough that it is cumbersome, and, I don't want to move it every time I add to the mother ship. I have been laying out pieces as I make them and adding them to each other as I can. It has been hard not to add each section right away to the quilt, but I don't want to move it every time.

It has been so long since I started this quilt, that, I can't perfectly match the fabrics. But, that was normal so long ago. And those quilters made do with whatever they had and so am I.

It is a puzzle. I Can't just blissfully make stars and rosettes. I need to make odd shaped sections that will fill in what is missing.

This corner is done. and the right side and bottom is done. I have one side left to go. But there are big sections that will need work.

stash report January 21, 2024

I have a bunch of the leftover trimmings from finished quilts. What do you do with yours? do you save them or process them right away. I really dislike separating the batting from the backing where it was stitched together.

Slow and steady... Since I am doing this at guild, now, I take the rug off the frame when I leave and fold it. Next time, I can start anywhere, so I will probably jump around a bit.

cutting green scraps

I started with 4 pounds 7 ounces of 2 1/2 inch strips in the drawer. That is at least 12 yards worth of fabric. My goal was to cut it in half by cutting and organizing. I cut greens for 2 rows for Jos checkers, the 2024 stashbuster, and a windmill quilt. I pulled out any pieces that were less than 12 inches.

I cut for a traffic jam quilt. Although, I could just dig in my 2 1/2 inch squares bin for the squares.

I have 2 pounds and 4 ounces left in the drawer. goal success. I tried sorting what was left into different green families. I found 9 wof strips for a jelly roll.

The small pieces I cut into hsts for monkey wrench and anything else that might present itself. But, wait, didn't I try to empty all the green hsts for sugar grove? duh

too many circles finish

I have an older ufo finish from the to be quilted closet.  Too many circles was part of my 5 quilt project for January. This year, I am focusing on my ufos that have been waiting for quilting.

closer to the real colors

The weather has not cooperated with outdoor pictures. I made this quilt when we had a local quilt shop as a local block of the month in 2012. If I remember right, I used a template set to cut the drunkard's path blocks. I think it was elisas. It sure made it easier. Since, this was also one of my bucket list quilts, I was happy to jump right in on the block of the month.

64 x 78 = 15 yards

I had a wonderful green for the backing and some leftover fabric for the binding.

more progress rick rack nines

It has been bitterly cold here in central Indiana- in the negatives. Great for staying in and quilting. I am working on rick rack nines, hoping for a top this month. It is the piecing focus for my 5 quilt project. Machine quilting 2 older Ufos is the quilting focus. I have been waiting for our Friday group at the library to lay out the rows. I don't have the room here.  I have a guild open sew this week that might be just what I need to finish the top. It is slowly growing.

gnome layer cake

I purchased a mystery layer cake during Chrsitmas sales. I was decidedly dissapointed. But, I accepted the challenge.

I found a simple layer cake pattern and began cutting and piecing. This was not part of any of my plans for the year, but, I guess I wanted a spontaneous project.

I cut 9 1/2 inch squares with half of the 10 inch squares. I cut the remaining  squares in half and sewed the halves for 4 patches. I still don't know if I will like this fabric. The pattern on you tube used busy fabrics, so, I thought it might still look good, too. But, this one is very very busy.
