planet quilt

I finished the planet quilt with time to spare. how exciting!

I couldn't find anything I liked to make a border. I wanted to make it bigger, but I just couldn't like anything I tried. I had enough 2 inch strips left to do a small border if I did it scrappy. I like it. And it is done and ready to be gifted to my Grandson.
What I am really excited about is that I really thought the purchase through before adding yet another project to the list. I was convinced I would get to it, but secretly afraid I wouldn't. I have 8 year old projects. but I did get to it and finish it in a quilter's reasonable amount of time. ... or so I think.

As far as participating in Jos string challenge and my corresponding mystery quilt challenge, I finished easy street.

the next quiltville mystery quilt to work on is either to quilt lazy sunday or add borders to carolina crossroads or just keep piecing on ringo lake.

Stash report February 24, 2018

A quilt store nearby is closing and have been offering graduated discounts. I purchased these batik pieces at 50 percent off. I really don't have very many and it isn't something that I can find at a discount on a regular basis.

I bought 8 yards

With the finish of easy Street I used 24 yards

With an impending move, I gave 45 yards to lucy

I'm away from home scouting for a move and I have a chance to stitch in the car, my favorite thing to do.
I have the main blocks stitched, but then after the piecing is done in sections, there is additional stitching on the pieced parts.

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week 69 yards
Fabric Used year to Date: 104 yards

Fabric Added this Week: 8 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 31.75 yards

Net Fabric for 2018: 72.25 yards used more than purchased.

squared away in purple

The rainbow scrap challenge has a quilt along sampler called squared away. Last month's block here

This month's block is called wishing ring  and February's color is purple. This gave me an opportunity to dig into my purple scraps. It's a free pattern and a great tutorial. Link here

There are so many colors of purple, at least in my scrap drawers.

easy street

Easy street is finished. I really like it too. This was the 2012 quiltville mystery quilt. I love the colors. I had most of it finished during the mystery, and have just worked on it here and there since then. This year, I made it my one monthly goal during February to actually quilt and bind it. There are 2520 pieces. and used 23 1/2 yards of fabric. I am one quilt closer to my goal of finishing all quiltville mystery quilts.

I needed my Friday group to help hold it up for pictures. We meet at the library. We have had several days of rain. and some flooding.

more snow blocks

I'm on a roll with the snow days quilt. After having cut for so many blocks, I can just sew a few seams when I get the chance. These are 6 inch blocks which are a little fiddley. I am excited that I can see on the instructions how to start putting the blocks together, so I am finally getting there.

Snow blocks

I spent my time at small group cutting blocks for my snow days quilt by Crab apple Hill

I made quite a mess. I cut strips and then I cut pieces. I needed 15 martha washington blocks 5- 6 inch - 5 -9 inch 5- 12 inch

I did get 2 of them sewn together in the 6 inch size.

I have reached into the darkest recesses of Christmas scraps ( and the attic) and have been cutting the rails for jingle bell square a quiltville pattern. My table is a scrappy Christmas mess, but some oldies and uglies are going to be useful pieces in a quilt. I am hoping to condense my Christmas fabrics to 2 tubs max. Any that can be sorted into color scraps will go there, and will be used as just the color red or green or black. Anything too Christmasy will go in the Christmas tub. I really don't ever plan to buy Christmas fabric..... but it is often at thrift stores, in grab bags and deep deep clearanced after Christmas. It's hard not to buy fabric after 70% off sales.

row by row

My Friday quilt group is working on a row by row quilt using Jen Kingwell patterns.
I was planning on joining them, but at this point, I am too far behind. But, I know I will love it when they are done, and feel a little sad that I didn't keep up with them.
This is the row they are making. Linda O made these.

easy street binding

note
I am stitching the binding on my Easy street quilt. This is part of my quiltville mystery quilt challenge of finishing along with Jo's string challenge before the next quiltville  publication. I hopefully will have it ready to show by the end of the week.

I have it in my head to sort, declutter, and pack away Christmas fabric. I have 3 quilts I am cutting while I go through my tubs.
I have a predominantly red and white quilt called peppermint candy.

Jingle bell square from Quiltville addicted to scraps

and a bargello.

I am hoping to cut my Christmas fabric stash by 50% in preparation for down sizing.

Stash report February 17, 2018

It has been awhile since I ordered from Missouri star quilt company. There have been so many very pretty precuts on special, but I have so many I haven't even opened. I needed thread for the quilting the planet quilt, and there just happened to be a charm pack special, so I clicked the add it to my cart button. It was a day when you could order more of the daily deal than the usual one. I bought 3 charm packs of crystal farm by Edyta Sitar and a mystery charm pack sandscapes chips in green.

I have been slow Sunday spinning and after several weeks, this is the result. There is about 500 yards altogether in eggplant. I am setting the spin after a good wash. I love to see it hanging there looking like real yarn. I still have a pound of this roving to spin, and I will be working on it a little every week.

Stash report

Fabric Added this Week: 2.25 yards

purple birch trees

I've added purple birch trees to my rainbow scrap challenges. I made 4 of them this month. I started this quilt as a rainbow project in January.

oops - I need to pay more attention to the up and down of each piece....

I am trying to be random with the slicing, but it seems that they are all the same anyway. One a little straighter, one leaning left, one leaning right. I guess there are only so many options.
I am making them about 12 inches for now, and will wait to trim them down when I am ready to piece the top.

Snow Days quilt

I have been anxious to dig around and start more blocks for my snow quilt which is on my one monthly goal list for February.  I needed a 12 inch block.

and a 9 inch block

Next I need several Martha Washington blocks in 6 inch, 9 inch, and 12 inch. These are going slowly, as each one has different fabrics and different sizes. I added a new batik in the center of the big block. Ooo very pretty.

I have easy street on the longarm. Easy street is a mystery quit from quiltville.

Stash report February 10, 2018

I made a few more string units for birch trees on string Saturday.

I spun more natural dorset fleece for spinning Sunday

and yesterday I quilted a customer quilt.

and spread out a new mess looking for a navy background for my rug hooking project- Uncle Sam's hat. And, before I knew it, I had decided to sort and measure all the blue wool. It was so much fun petting the wool and thinking of all the projects I want to make, but, sorting wasn't even on the to do list anywhere. Now I have to add 'put it all away' on the to do list.

And I am late with last week's stash report

planet parts

I have created planet parts. I found the pattern, and I cut the quilt out on Friday at quilt group, and had most of them sewn before the weekend was over. I am so pleased this quilt is coming together. I had a bit of trouble understanding the directions. It is a BQ pattern from Maple Island quilts.

The kit did not come with specific instructions from the quilt shop with the specific fabrics. Luckily, I had taken a picture 6 months ago at the quilt show where I purchased the kit. It took a while to find it on my phone, but the miracle is that I did. That helped me figure out which fabric was which.

I was worried about cutting wedge sets that I might not be accurate enough, but they were oversized and I could trim them to the right size.

Part of why I liked the project, was the bits of bright colors included. It turns out to be the result of a gradient fabric piece. Very cool.

I have not worked on any quiltville mysteries this week for Jo's country junction challenge. I still just have the borders cut for Carolina Cross roads, but they are not attached. Maybe next week.
