scraps in the barnyard

I pulled this old ufo out of deep storage to see if I could get the top done in September.

I have the borders pieced and added to the quilt. I used mostly shirts and strips waiting to be trimmed.  It will wait it's turn for quilting. I found a back and made the binding as well. I really like the barn raising setting for quilts. It adds a fun twist to ordinary blocks.

Bricks in the barnyard is found in Bonnie Hunter's Book- scraps and shirt tails 2

In an effort to get more of my quilts quilted, I have 3 of them done and waiting to be trimmed and bound. I have never had a pile for binding before. If I quilt it, I bind it. But, I am focusing on the quilting of the back log. It is a bit unnerving having those waiting for me.

It has gotten cold here, the garden is barely hanging on. We still have sweet potatoes, and peppers. We planted brussel sprouts for a fall crop  but all we have are giant leaves that look very healthy. We planted garlic and they have little stalks.

john wayne quilt

I have a finish, but, it's not my quilt. This is a customer quilt made for a John Wayne fan. The back is as cool as the front. I didn't have any cowboy designs. - not a lot of need here in the midwest. So, I did a little research about John Wayne, made a list of his movies, and wrote them with thread on the quilt. I did it free hand, so, I knew it would be wonky, so, I went wonky on purpose. I really like how it turned out.

I added his stage name and his real name, and 10 movies. I hope they like it  I sure had fun doing it.

rug finish

It's bad enough as a home body, with everything cancelled, I have no frame of reference.

I finished this little rug hooking wall hanging. It needed pressed and blocked. And I needed a little finish.

I used a piece of the background wool to make the back.

I finished the customer quilt I was working on last week and it was delivered.

and I am cutting scraps a little at a time. I seem to be wanting triangles.

what I'm working on today

What I'm working on is catching up on some customer quilts. They have waited far too long. Hubby is sleeping in the chair and the quilts are calling me.

I love scrappy quilters - they leave happy surprises in the quilt which makes me smile.

birdsnest

How did I spend national quilting day?  under the longarm.  It was fine, and then it wasn't. It was a customer quilt I really wanted to finish. Luckily, hubby was able to figure out I had thread and hair? around the bobbin shaft. He took the time to clean and oil better than I usually do, and we were up and running again. It may take awhile before I am not a bit upset with my machine again. I had changed bobbins, and needle, and rethreaded it 3 times and tried to quilt the same section 4 times. I was afraid the fabric would be in shreds. But all is well now.

I am sorting through my green scraps this month for the rainbow scrap challenge and I had a chance to cut the short 2 1/2 in strips into tumblers with the template. I don't want to waste any fabric, but it is good to get the small pieces out of the strips. It just feels better.

Hubby and I did a little experimenting and we made bacon for the first time. We cured it, and smoked it, and it was delicious. And we must have done it right, since we are not dead.

square dance clue 3 finish

I have been working on the mystery quilt from My Carolina Home. I have finished  clue 3 come down the middle. It was an easy clue, sewing rectangles together in 2 different combinations. I didn't take a picture of the print with a light set. After some of the mystery quilts I have done, this is really a pleasure.

My Clue 1
My Clue 2

With my hubby home, my Nellie longarm had a much needed spa day.

Now, she purrs. I am so grateful He has been able to do this. It has been a blessing all these years that He is very talented in this way.

Stash report February 10, 2018

I made a few more string units for birch trees on string Saturday.

I spun more natural dorset fleece for spinning Sunday

and yesterday I quilted a customer quilt.

and spread out a new mess looking for a navy background for my rug hooking project- Uncle Sam's hat. And, before I knew it, I had decided to sort and measure all the blue wool. It was so much fun petting the wool and thinking of all the projects I want to make, but, sorting wasn't even on the to do list anywhere. Now I have to add 'put it all away' on the to do list.

And I am late with last week's stash report

sunday stash report January 14. 2018

JOann had their precuts on sale, buy one get one free with an additional 20% off coupon. That made 40 strips 10.40. I certainly don't need any more, but I couldn't resist the cream jelly rolls. They are so easy to use. I have discovered that they are not cut true, but I can run them through the accuquilt. I reach into my neutral bin more than any other scrap bin.

I have finished a customer quilt. She gave it to me before Christmas, and then she became ill and said she wouldn't be quilting for awhile, and I procrastinated finishing it. She is ready now, and has a beautiful reproduction Christmas quilt to bind for winter. That is always a favorite way to spend a winter evening especially if you add hot chocolate.

I ordered acid dyes from cushing during the holidays and as part of their Christmas gifting, they sent this adorable rug pattern with my order. What a wonderful surprise.

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week 2 yard
Fabric Used year to Date: 2 yards

Fabric Added this Week: 9 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 9 yards

Net Fabric for 2018: 7 yards more came in than went out.

I missed one day of 15 minutes of stitching this week
so 13 out of 14 days - 93% for the year

Catch up

I found the bucket for Holy Toledo quilt buried in the mess.
I have all of the large 1/2 square triangles finished. And all of the sets of three of the small  1/2 square triangles.

I have all of the rest of the small 1/2 square triangles sewn.

Now I need to make 80 sets of 4 small 1/2 square triangles.

I finished 2 customer quilts for Christmas. Not a good picture.

I am washing the batik I need for On ringo lake.
 and more mini churndashes

scrappy rag rug

I have finished another rag rug using my homemade rug loom. I had an entire bucket of fabric that didn't make the cut even for a string quilt, so I used them in this rug. It measures 28 x 38 inches and lays so perfectly flat on the floor. That is why I love them better than crochet or braided rag rugs. The technique is called twining.
I made the frame here.

I have a new quilt on the frame with a music theme.

double delight

I found the box of my Double Delight project in the ufo closet.  Again, all the pieces are there, all I need to do is start laying out the rows. I am challenged when it comes to on point settings. I really need to arrange and rearrange before I start to sew. And still I might find a setting triangle turned wrong. This was Bonnie Hunter's 3rd mystery quilt, so it needs to get finished. I love the colors and the scrappy fabrics.

Again, I am in no hurry and plan to use this as my away project at the library. There will be room to lay it out there.

I finished this beautiful quilt for a customer. The colors are wonderful.

She had extra blocks on the back which my longarm wasn't happy about but did just fine.

A finish

First, my hubby used bed springs as trellises in the garden for a real funky look- haha- as though weeds didn't get the funky look best.  Our cucumbers have tried "dozing" on the funky trellis. I bet he has a stiff back when he awakes.

I have a finish of epic proportions. tada!
I am so very happy to have this finish. I forgot to fasten the hanging sleeve down, so it is showing at the top. It is more than queen size but not king. The pattern was a block of the month designed by Nancy Rink called Mill girls. Each month's story was about life at a clothing mill in the 1800s, collected in the form of letters. It is a way of life, none of us could imagine. I loved piecing the blocks, the directions were great, but I let it languish when it was time to put it together. I was afraid, I didn't have the skill level, or the patience. But if I had waited much longer, I wouldn't have had the muscle strength to man handle it LOL.

The project I am working on this month, snow days, languished for many of the same reasons.

Now I can focus on it, and make progress. This was finish for a customer. I love her choice of colors.

how i do the glitter block

mill girls is on the long arm frame with a wool batt.

woohoo - I am taking my time on this one.

I took pictures of my process on the Jen Kingwell glitter block. Maybe it will help someone else.
There are several pieces to the block and I need to use the templates for marking at the machine. There are 5 pieces of the main fabric 4 pieces of the  accent fabric and 4 pieces of background fabric. They need a press.

Since there are 2 seams for the center, I start with that seam. I line up the main fabric square and an accent square and sew the seam completely.
The rest of the accent squares are lined up with the upper left side of the main blade. I make a pencil mark on the outside hole. I hold the blade pieces with the wide point at the top. A mechanical pencil is the only marking instrument that is small enough to fit in the hole.
Then I can sew from the tip to that point, back stitch ,and turn the piece so I can chain the next one.

I can clip off the first patches from the back of the machine, and then I add the second accent square to the first squares to make a threesome.

Next I add the triangle to blade shaped piece on the far right I know I need a long straight line so that's how I remember how to place the triangle.
Next I sew these two units together. I have to mark the the 1/4 inch seam at the left but can sew all the way through on the right.

Here I have to add some other leader / ender piece, in this case the kite block, to keep the chain going.
I add the the other blade piece to the unit again marking and back stitching the square that is on the outside of the blade piece.

The next step is to add the background pieces with a y seam. I will post about that later.
I am off to make a pass on mill girls.
