cathedral top finish

My current 5 quilt project has been cathedral stars an older ufo from 2016, a Bonnie hunter pattern. I just finished all the piecing and the borders. I like it much better than I thought I would. I have decided to add it to the to be quilted closet to wait for it's turn on the longarm. Right now, I am still quilting this month's quilting goals. I am enjoying the break from big quilts. My new piecing project is garlic knots.

We had a beautiful rainy day with just the right amount of sunshine to see a double rainbow.

strip weave top finish

The top for my strip weave quilt is ready for quilting. I have added it to the cue for the long arm. This was part of my rainbow scrap challenge projects for last year. I made the blocks from scraps using the color of the month and 2 1/2 inch strips. I didn't have a pattern just a picture on my bulletin board. I had to redo some of them as I had edge strips going the wrong way.

churn dash top finish

The churn dash top is finally finished even with a border. I really like the border, it is richer than the picture. I have found a back and prepared binding and have added it to the 'to be quilted' closet. It is happily chatting with friends and waiting it's turn.

I added this Ufo to my 5 quilts in February, and have been assembling it since then.

falling charms goal

I have had this quilt top ready for quilting since 2021. I drew a random number and this is my second quilting goal for February. I bought this as a kit from Missourri Star, and it used African fabrics from the ubushobozi project. I love the rich colors. I need a back and binding. And it is time to quilt it. The pattern is falling charms.

Through education and skills training (sewing, weaving, crocheting and more) Ubushobozi seeks to end the cycle of poverty our girls have experienced throughout their young lives.

gnome top

I purchased a mystery layer cake during Christmas sales. I was decidedly disappointed. But, it was great chance to try a layer cake nd pattern.

This little top is finished and ready to be quilted. It is my first layer cake pattern. I can see why they are popular - very quick and easy.

scrappy pinwheels is a top

I am surprised that this quilt is larger than expected. I thought it would be a small lap quilt, but, it is a good size lap quilt. Scrappy pinwheels is a top. I really like the pattern and revisiting older scraps. Hopefully, it will get a turn on the long arm soon.

I started it in 2018 cutting the pieces and sewing some flippy corners. It went into the ufo closet for a vacation.

I made it a goal here in February as part of the 5 quilts project. It has been a delight to work with it.

I cut a quilt kit here from shirt fabric. I would be glad to sell the cut kit for 30.00 plus shipping.

twisted braid finish

I have a finish. Twisted braid is ready to gift. I drew this ufo number for my 5 quilts earlier this year, just about the time, I learned my new Grandbaby will be a boy. perfect timing

64 x 64 = 14 yards

I used a lovely, sheet for the back and free motion bubbles for the quilting.

twisted braid top

I auditioned neutral, red, and light blue for the sashing. But, I decided to use dark blue. The top is ready for quilting as soon as there is time on the longarm.

I found this pattern in this book. I have had it for awhile. I cut and put the pattern together as a kit in 2018. I drew it as a random number for part of my 5 quilts early this year. I took it as a portable project to piece and when all the other quilts on the list were waiting to be quilted, I finished it here at home.

I really like the purse quilt on the cover, and, if, I ever get to a new project, that might be it.

baskets ufo top

This is One of the 5 quilts I am working to finish

It was a buck a block from a store in Indy in 2014. I loved the colors and fabrics so much so that I bought the finishing kit, too. So, the monthly blocks were just the baskets. I am not sure why it has been an Ufo for so long, but, it needs finishing. I pressed and trimmed, and added the inner borders, and the outer border.

It is officially a top with a back and binding ready for the "to be quilted" closet. I need to change the name closet to vault. At least the quilts have each other for company.

finished top dart

I decided to add a border to dart. I was able to use leftover pieces of jelly roll strips and I wish I could say there were no scraps left, but, there are. I am using a brown backing and black binding strips

scraps in the barnyard

I pulled this old ufo out of deep storage to see if I could get the top done in September.

I have the borders pieced and added to the quilt. I used mostly shirts and strips waiting to be trimmed. It will wait it's turn for quilting. I found a back and made the binding as well. I really like the barn raising setting for quilts. It adds a fun twist to ordinary blocks.

In an effort to get more of my quilts quilted, I have 3 of them done and waiting to be trimmed and bound. I have never had a pile for binding before. If I quilt it, I bind it. But, I am focusing on the quilting of the back log. It is a bit unnerving having those waiting for me.

It has gotten cold here, the garden is barely hanging on. We still have sweet potatoes, and peppers. We planted brussel sprouts for a fall crop but all we have are giant leaves that look very healthy. We planted garlic and they have little stalks.

quilt top ready

In an effort to make it longer than wider, I added wonky stars to the top and bottom of my ode to Joey quilt, and, now, it is a top. I have a large flannel wide back for the back and a multicolored binding sewn together. I made this for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. And, now, it lives in the "to be quilted" closet annex. I have a 'sleep in your own bed" retreat this weekend. I haven't even decided what I am taking to work on while I am there. I have a Christmas quilt that needs a back pieced, but, blah. I will get up and see what suits my fancy. I am taking sea swept with me but, think I will have it done in a couple of hours.

falling charms quilt

I thought I would share a few thoughts about borders, and the top I just finished. Borders used to be my kryptonite. I could procrastinate forever adding the borders. Someone, I forget who, shared using the longarm frame to measure borders with the quilt. I hang it over the outer bar and lay the borders on top, making sure I smooth it and not stretch it. My undying gratitude to whomever mentioned that tip. It was especially important during my back issues.

I had to turn a couple squares to get it right

I like to find the middle of both the borders and the quilt and pin there. I will pin the end of the border once I reach the middle. otherwise, I don't pin. I use my hand to hold things in place. And I run my machine at full speed once I have everything measured and anchored. Now, I like doing borders and can get them done with very little effort.

zuckerwatte quilt finish

I have a finish -bonnie Hunter quilt zuckerwatte from her book string fling. It is a smaller quilt than I thought when I started it. It is about 58 x 70. I started working on this ufo in January at a retreat, I had started at the beginning of January with only string blocks made. I made the string blocks in June 2017. I cut a gazillion HSTS - (half square triangles)... sewed a bunch together, and made rows. and blocks. It is really pretty in person.

I used a plain pink sheet for the backing that I had in my stash. The pattern says there is 14 yards of fabric in the quilt. and all of it came from scraps except the border which I had in my stash.

This is my goal for June for one monthly goal at elm street quilts. I pulled this ufo out in January for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy and the color pink, and, I am finishing it in June for the color purple. How fun to have another UFO out of the closet and another quilt to be quilted off the list., and some of the smallest pieces are gone from the string bin.

seeing stars

This is as far as I have gotten to a finish with this Bonnie Hunter quilt ufo, that, I started before she printed the pattern. I didn't like her version (xing) from string frenzy, so it was time to decide how to finish it. I have a vintage red fabric, I want for the borders.

floating stars top

I added the same blue as the setting triangles to finish the top of floating stars. This is my one monthly goal for April. It needs backing, and, binding, and, a turn on the longarm. Hopefully, this will be another ufo done this month. I am sneaking it in between other people's quilts. If I didn't, I would never have finishes.

I am trying to make 2 easy breezy blocks each morning. It's easier after I cut a lot of squares from scraps. I cut a stack of the background pieces as well. I will work through them until, I can't make sets any more and then, go back to piecing.

zucherwatte quilt top

I was excited to find a favorite border fabric already in my stash. It is such a favorite that, I immediately made plans to replace the fabric. haha will I ever have less fabric?. I guess I have a thing for polka dots and just this color of pink.

I found a large pink sheet that I will use for the back. And, now I can add one more quilt to the others waiting to be quilted. My list is growing.

snow and stars

Like everyone else in middle America, we have snow. Our county received 9 inches overnight. It was beautiful and fluffy everywhere. And the prediction is for more over the weekend.

What a great opportunity to sew uninterrupted. I feel for those without power. Although, I have a people powered treadle machine, light to see by, requires electricity. And, our water is a well and pump that also needs electricity. We have had power. So, I have the border on Boxy stars. This is an older UFO from 2016. And, I hope to have it finished this month. I have a customer quilt on the longarm, and, then, I will squeeze it in for quilting. The month is fast slipping away from me.
