5 quilts march 29, 2023

last report February 20, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

This has been a frustrating round of 5 quilts. The quilts were easily finished, but, none of them, were inspiring to me. I am questioning the method. Yet, I know, I have finished more ufos than any other way I have tried. I was disappointed in not finishing quilts from my "to be quilted" closet. Because, I could just as easily keep the longarm busy with my finishes from 5 quilts. All the projects should change now.  I hope it is a better mix of piecing and finishing.

1. twisted braid - is finished

twisted braid finish

I have a finish. Twisted braid is ready to gift. I drew this ufo number for my 5 quilts earlier this year, just about the time, I learned my new Grandbaby will be a boy.  perfect timing

64 x 64 = 14 yards

I used a lovely, sheet for the back and free motion bubbles for the quilting.

Most of these have been posted, but, I need to move on with new projects. I feel as though I have been staring at the same list for forever. I know projects take time, but I tend to veer off if it takes too long.

  last report February 3, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead. My focus will be circa 1880 until it is quilted and bound. It is my one monthly goal for February.

1. circa 1880-  More about this here.  I added borders and it is ready to quilt. I made it my one monthy goal at elm street quilts to be sure I stick to it. quilting is done - it just needs binding

2.twisted braid - is ready for quilting I need to iron, piece backing, and prepare binding, but, not until circa is done

3. radiant star from 2012 - is ready to quilt but circa is first.

4. scrappy pinwheels. I opened the box and it appears to have pieces sewn for the parts of blocks

5. Kristals- I had a box full of bright colored fabric and the pattern. I didn't have anything cut.  The main kristals are sewn and I am ready to prepare the secondary kristals before I can make a block.

new 5. wool lady table runner. I need to open the box and see how far it is done before I can start on the finish

twisted braid top

I auditioned neutral, red, and light blue for the sashing. But, I decided to use dark blue. The top is ready for quilting as soon as there is time on the longarm.

I found this pattern in this book. I have had it for awhile. I cut and put the pattern together as a kit in 2018. I drew it as a random number for part of my 5 quilts early this year. I took it as a portable project to  piece and when all the other quilts on the list were waiting to be quilted, I finished it here at home.
I really like the purse quilt on the cover, and, if, I ever get to a new project, that might be it.

now, it waits to be quilted.

5 quilts February 3, 2023

 last report  5 quilts january 23, 2023

We took a mini little vacation and, now, it is time to regroup and recheck my goals. I have a new finish and change on the list for February. I always look forward to adding something new from my ufo list.

1. sea swept finished

2. circa 1880-  More about this here.  I added borders and it is ready to quilt. I made it my one monthy goal at elm street quilts to be sure I stick to it.

3. twisted braid - I have all the main blocks pieced and I am ready to make long vertical rows. I can't decide on a sashing color - red? blue?

4. radiant star from 2012 - is ready to quilt but circa is first.

new 5. scrappy pinwheels. I need to open the box. My notes say, all the pieces have been cut and sewn. It is time to make the blocks

new 1. wool lady table runner. AGAIN, I need to open the box and see how far it is done before I can start on the finish

oops - On a whim, I am starting a new project which will delay the wool table runner. Linda O and I bought the same pattern at a quilt show and we are going to sew it together for awhile. I am sure she will soon out pace me, and, it might turn into a UFo. But, I enjoy a bit of the friendly competition.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.

twisted braid ufo

I used a random number generator to pick a number from my ufo list for my 5 quilts focus. Twisted braid was the choice. My notes said that, I had cut everything in the quilt in 2018. My guess, I had a group of matching 2 1/2 strips and thought I might as well cut it into a pattern I wanted to try rather than put them away. haha. I took it with me to Friday sew. and started sewing. Something wasn't right. It called for a jelly roll, and I know I started with enough strips. But, I didn't have enough pieces for the sets of three below.

I went home, reread the directions, cut some more of  the same color families. I started again and was able to sew the rest of the blocks.    Another week, and, I had the main blocks sewn together.

Another week and I had the setting triangles made.

This a lap size quilt that is not very big. It may be the perfect quilt for a new Grandson coming this summer. Looking ahead, I will need a sashing/border fabric that was not in the box with the project. I changed the colors, and, I hope the scrappy look will look right.

 last report 5 quilts January 6, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead. My focus will be circa 1880 until it is a complete finish. It will probably be my one monthly goal for February. The new UFOs added to the list have more piecing and assembling to do. That will give me time on the longarm for quilts that are ready for quilting.

1. dotty bow ties finished

2. circa 1880-  More about this here.  I have the ends finished and I am looking for the perfect border from my stash. I don't want to add much border or it won't fit on the long arm LOL. I think it needs something.

3. sea swept finished - no photos yet.

4. twisted braid - All the pieces were cut when I opened the box. I started sewing blocks at my Friday sewing group meeting. I got just so far, and there was a mistake on the cutting. I need to add more strips. It will be my portable project for group sews.

5. radiant star from 2012 -My notes say it is a finished top but not in the to be quilted closet. So it must need a back and binding AND OF COURSE QUILTING.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.

I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead. project box decisions

I found a project box in my reorganiztion and decided I just wanted to finish these projects and be done with the whole box. I am afraid the word just has been my undoing many times. After finishing the sewing on hippie baby, I moved on to Twisted braid. This is from a jelly roll book that I have had for a long time. I had this wonderful set of jelly roll strips in red, white, and blue. And then it was put on the project shelf. I decided I wanted to make this quilt, I still like it, and everything I needed was in the box.

I spent one evening watching "When calls the heart" and had it cut. I think it is going back into the project box for another time. But, I moved it another step closer.

project #3 was a 1 1/2 in jelly roll and 2 yards of matching fabric. I have really tried to figure out what I had in mind, but, I can't. I did some research on the internet for a new exciting project that I could use, but nothing has impressed me. I think, mostly, because I have too many projects already. I still love the colors and fabrics, but I am sending this back into the fabric stash. Maybe someday.... but not now.

Meanwhile, I have a few more friendship stars finished
