twisted braid ufo

I used a random number generator to pick a number from my ufo list for my 5 quilts focus. Twisted braid was the choice. My notes said that, I had cut everything in the quilt in 2018. My guess, I had a group of matching 2 1/2 strips and thought I might as well cut it into a pattern I wanted to try rather than put them away. haha. I took it with me to Friday sew. and started sewing. Something wasn't right. It called for a jelly roll, and I know I started with enough strips. But, I didn't have enough pieces for the sets of three below.

I went home, reread the directions, cut some more of  the same color families. I started again and was able to sew the rest of the blocks.    Another week, and, I had the main blocks sewn together.

Another week and I had the setting triangles made.

This a lap size quilt that is not very big. It may be the perfect quilt for a new Grandson coming this summer. Looking ahead, I will need a sashing/border fabric that was not in the box with the project. I changed the colors, and, I hope the scrappy look will look right.

stash report 1/29/2023

These are mystery jelly rolls from last December. I am including in this years totals because I was hiding them from myself.

fabric added: 6 yards
fabric added year to date: 19 1/2 yards

fabric used: 25 + 12 yards donated   sea swept finished

fabric used year to date: 49 yards

29 1/2 yards used more than bought - Yippee I have flipped to the used side

I sewed 6 days last week.  including Friday sew

Last week, I stitched and finished a hexie while traveling in the car. This week, I hope to add it to the mother ship. As I move up the side of my quilt, I want to work to straighten the edge. I have 2 sides to that point and I am adding a row to make it bigger. That is the row, I will work to a straight edge.

I am running low on scraps that are big enough for the last rounds

stars in blue

My last blue project for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy is Lucky star. I bought a layer cake of batiks last fall to use for bright colored stars.

Two pieces of layer cake made 4 stars with some scraps leftover.

I also cut qsts for box kite borders which is an older UFO.

I never make a dent in the blue scrap bins, but, I am excited for a new color next month. I did not bring home any free fabric from the quilt guild free table, And I took 12 yards from my stash to the table. I have had a missourri star addiction last year, and, I haven't seen much of anything this month, that I had to have. Maybe, I can see the scraps and/ or stash dwindling this year.

sea swept finish

Sea swept is finished and ready for our Spring guild quilt show. This was my January one monthly goal at elm street quilts. It is a beautiful quilt. I really like the colors, and, snails trail has been on my bucket list for years. All I needed to get started, was my sewing friend deciding she wanted to make one too. I started cutting in May 2021.

86 x 99

25 yards
I used a  wide flannel backing and free motion swirls on the longarm. I used leftover scraps for the binding.

This is all we had to make this. Linda had the pamphlet which had paper piecing blocks printed. I didn't want to paper piece, so, I guesstimated the sizes I would need to cut using templates. Linda went with darker blues and teals. I had batik fat quarters that I used. My blocks finished larger than hers.

radiant star progress

I had an open sew Saturday with the guild.  I needed a piecing project to take with me, since I mistakenly thought twisted braid( number 2) would not take the whole day. Circa is number one on the 5 quilt list. It is big and needs borders. I did not want to carry that. I opened radiant star ( number 3). It needed borders, too, but, is small enough to carry with me. I pressed it, ate a piece of candy for bravery, and, then, trimmed the edges. I really dread that step. One mistake, and the whole thing blows up. Luckily, it was fine, and I was able to add two borders, easily. I took this quilt as a class at a LQS in 2012.

it will be about 50 x50

Another Ufo ready to quilt

I took another project to cut. And I worked on my twisted braid. It was not close to finishing, even after, I worked the afternoon on it.

5 quilts january 23, 2023

 last report 5 quilts January 6, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead. My focus will be circa 1880 until it is a complete finish. It will probably be my one monthly goal for February. The new UFOs added to the list have more piecing and assembling to do. That will give me time on the longarm for quilts that are ready for quilting.

1. dotty bow ties finished

2. circa 1880-  More about this here.  I have the ends finished and I am looking for the perfect border from my stash. I don't want to add much border or it won't fit on the long arm LOL. I think it needs something.

3. sea swept finished - no photos yet.

4. twisted braid - All the pieces were cut when I opened the box. I started sewing blocks at my Friday sewing group meeting. I got just so far, and there was a mistake on the cutting. I need to add more strips. It will be my portable project for group sews.

5. radiant star from 2012 -My notes say it is a finished top but not in the to be quilted closet. So it must need a back and binding AND OF COURSE QUILTING.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.

1. wonderland table topper

go fish - blue

Last year's quiltville leader / ender challenge was fish school. I did cut all the strips I would need for the triangles according to the rsc color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.. This year, I plan to cut the triangles and sew them into fish school blocks. These are the blue for the month of January. Eventually, I will use them in a quiltville quilt called kismet.

I am also cutting the sashings for an older ufo quiltville garlic knots. The blocks are made, but, there are these pesky sashing and border pieces that I procrastinated. I hope cutting pieces by color each month will eventually surprise me with all of them cut for this quilt. clever mental trick or complete disaster. LOL

dotty bow ties finish

Dotty bow ties is done. My first finish for the year is the first quiltville leader/ ender challenge from 2011 - 2012. This year, when the new leader/ender was announced, I decided, rather than start a new project/quilt, I would go back, and actually finish the ones I have already started. I have started each new challenge over the years, but have finished two.

72 x 72

12 yards of fabric

I used as leftover dotty fabric for the binding

I used 2 larger pieces of pink for the back. I free motioned circles on the longarm.

If I continue finishing the leader/ ender UFOs, spools would be next from 2012- 2013. I know I have many many spools made and ready. If I remember right, I may have swapped with others on that block. I would have to wait for an opening on the 5 quilt list.

hunters star

Every morning, I make at least one hunters star block. I have also sewn the individual blocks into twosies. I am trying to make them random, but, I find myself picking through them for just the right way to use them. haha -I cut and made the single blocks last year as part of the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

The daily practice has made progress. I have accumulated  almost 30 big blocks. Better than, if I had sent them to the ufo closet. I don't think all my points are perfect, but, the overall look is really amazing. The plan is working. After all the big blocks are finished, I will send them to the ufo closet to wait their turn for finishing.

radiant star ufo

I finished one of my 5 quilts, and, I was anxious to choose another for the list, so, that, I can ruminate about it and what needs to be done. This is an older UFO from 2012. I took a class at a local Quilt store. And we completed the top to this point that day. My mind was fried making it, and I let it disappear into the UFO void. I don't think it will intimidate me this time. It is low on the list, but, now, I know I can move it forward on it's turn.

I still like the fabrics and colors. I am glad I left a note for the borders.

Our little kitten rescue has taken over our hearts and surprises us often. He is still is a bit feral and wants to be an outdoor cat, as long as he can take over the house too.

stash report January 15, 2023

I found some batiks to add to my stash. I was surprised how much aqua/ turquoise I have added to my stash the last few years. I have an impressive stack of them. Last year, my goal was to mindfully add yellow and purple. I did a great job, I think. This year, I don't have a focus for purchases, except not to make any - LOL. I have plenty of everything. plenty.....

 Stash report January 8, 2023

fabric added: 6 yards
fabric added year to date: 12 yards

fabric used: 0 yards

fabric used year to date: 0 yards

I sewed 7 days last week. It was dreary and rainy. What else to do?

After losing this rug for so long, I have been making preparations for completing it. I needed to dye a few yards of wool for the background that I want for the last border. I didn't want to move on, until, I had this decision locked in to the plan.  I think I can go ahead with the alphabet letters in a dark red color.

strip weave

I have more blue 2 1/2 inch strips than just about any other kind of scraps. It is always a good idea to try and whittle these down a bit. I made these blue weave type block for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. This little bit won't help much. I found a whole plastic box of blue scraps that I am sorting this month. There are larger than fat quarters that will go to my stash. There are, oddly enough, 2 1/2 inch strips. Yea more! and lots of surprises.

I thought I would sneak this in as blue, but, I may need to save it for yellow. haha

My rsc plans for 2023
1. hollow nine with applique 3 1/2 inch done for blue
2. strip weave  2 1/2 inch  done for blue
3. diffusion 2 inch/ fish school(kismet) done for blue
4. cut sashing for garlic knots 1 1/2 inch
5. bright star 4 1/2 inch

swap blocks and progress

It is time to turn my attention to finishing this ufo on my 5 quilts list. I have the rows I need for a queen size quilt I want to make.

This quilt began as a swap between my quilty friends and me. I have been slowly adding the squares and strips. It stalled again, as, I wasn't sure how to finish the pesky ends. Yesterday, I laid it out on my bed, letting the ends fall over the end of the bed, and started pinning triangles, so, I can sew them into the end of the rows. I don't have any other place to see what I needed to do. It felt much easier than I thought, so, I am making progress.

Once I finish one end, I will decide if I need to make it longer.

Dotty bow ties is quilted and ready for binding and I am quilting sea swept for my one monthly goal.

I am using hunter star as a leader/ ender at the sewing machine, after, I make a big block a day.

I have a rug to hook on the frame for the evenings.

snails trail blocks

I was anxious to start another round for snails trail. I needed to cut more background muslin. I really like the go die for this block. The pieces fit so nicely together.

I have 51 blocks, now. I really like making them. Maybe, I just won't stop. I just work on them as therapy blocks. It helps me to relax to just piece sometimes. They are 8 inch blocks I would need 100 for a queen size quilt.
