sea swept finish

Sea swept is finished and ready for our Spring guild quilt show. This was my January one monthly goal at elm street quilts. It is a beautiful quilt. I really like the colors, and, snails trail has been on my bucket list for years. All I needed to get started, was my sewing friend deciding she wanted to make one too. I started cutting in May 2021.

86 x 99

25 yards
I used a  wide flannel backing and free motion swirls on the longarm. I used leftover scraps for the binding.

This is all we had to make this. Linda had the pamphlet which had paper piecing blocks printed. I didn't want to paper piece, so, I guesstimated the sizes I would need to cut using templates. Linda went with darker blues and teals. I had batik fat quarters that I used. My blocks finished larger than hers.

A new year- a new monthly goal

I can't believe it is a new year already. So much possiblity ahead. Good or bad, I feel blessed knowing I am God's child and He will direct me for good.

I think my last post for this quilt was here in September 2021. This is one of the quilts I want to enter into our Spring quilt show 2023. I need to make sure I get it really ready in time. I will make this my January one monthly goal. I need to check on borders and find a back and binding for it. It needs quilting, trimmed and bound before the end of January.

dotty bow ties is a top. I am looking for a back and binding, and then, it is on the longarm next.

snails trails

Hooray ! I started assembly of my sea swept quilt at my Friday quilt group. The left 4 snails trails are sewn together but, the rest are only webbed together to check and secure placement. It is really cool. I came home, and I am doing some of the pinning watching TV in the evening.

meanwhile, I am back to sewing easy breezy blocks but using 1 1/2 inch squares and strips as leader/enders while sewing other blocks.

more sea swept

My finish for the week is all the diamonds for my sea swept quilt are done. They haven't been trimmed in the picture, but, I am ready to start the assembly today at our quilt group. I made 10 a day after coming home, and, I finished trimming yesterday.

I am so glad to move this forward after the debacle of last week and the wrong size diamonds

sink or swim at retreat

Oh my - my retreat story. I just couldn't find a project to work on except my sea swept quilt. And I was closing in on finishing all the blocks I would need. But, I thought it would just take a couple of hours. Silly me, thinking I needed another project.  Just as I finished sewing 388 triangles to 97 diamonds, and began to trim them, Someone asked me what I was making. So I showed her my snails trail blocks and how this was the sashing.   And, Oh no,  they were too small for the block. I had chosen the wrong size on the template. aack and phooey. It took a minute.... or two  to decide this block was not going to defeat me.

all for another quilt someday

Luckily, I had used Kona snow for the background. I only had a 6 inch strip left. I ran to Joann fabrics and bought another 2 yards. And I cut the diamonds again in the bigger and hopefully right size.

97 diamonds

But at this point I had used all my optimism and wanted to work on something else. So I mindlessly sewed 2 1/2 inch shirt pieces for 4 patches. Am I getting too confused to quilt? etc. Maybe but, I will go out making mistakes if that is what it takes. So, I wanted to at least get the triangles cut before I went home for the night. Luckily, I still had batiks to use for the triangles.

tada- 388 cut

Big difference

This time, I decided I would make 10 a day until I made them all.  I was to retreat bright eyed and bushy tailed. And made the first 10. That wasn't so bad.

4 x 8 inches before trimming

big difference again. How did I make such a mistake?

By the time I went home, I had 50 made. whew

more sea swept

I have been making 7- 10 sea swept blocks every Friday with my quilt group. I have collected a nice size pile. I thought I would take an accounting and decide where to go from here. I was pleasantly surprised to realize I have 38 made. and 7 in process with 2 rounds. I need 42. This pattern calls for a sashing that will make a wonderful star. The pattern is also for paperpiecing. And the finished piece is smaller than what I am doing. SO, I will need to "invent" what I will need for my block. I think it is time for some paper doodles and math before I can go on with the project.

I obviously miscounted the cutting. I still have a lot of pieces left over. Do I make it bigger? and maybe skip the sashing? Decisions and decisions

pattern

Do I wish that I had not pieced my own block so that I could just follow the pattern? Nope, I prefer piecing over paper piecing any day. And I love the blocks I am making.

sea swept again

I feel like a broken record.... sea swept, easy breezy, aunt eliza.. repeat. I am really trying to stick to these and making progress however small. Our Friday group met again... on Friday... and I have a new batch of sea swept blocks finished.  I really like making these. I need to cut more background if I am to continue. I only work on these on Friday. I need 42 blocks to do the pattern. I think I have 20 +.

My friend Linda is making her sea swept with the smaller blocks and paper piecing. We had a chance to compare. Mine ( bottom right) is bigger. I was surprised by how much it is bigger. I am cutting the pieces and piecing them.

progress

My Friday quilt group met, and, I had a chance to work on sea swept. I made 7 more blocks.

And, there are still more easy breezy blocks. Completed blocks are taking over the box, which means I am making progress.

2 a day keeps the scraps at bay

4 patches

I've made another 50 four patches -only 212 to go. These are for sand castles quilt in Bonnie Hunters book. I have the string piecing done, and I am slowly building four patches as leader/ enders.

I have been moving my batik fabrics to the new bookcases. I had more than I thought. I suspected that about all my fabric, which is why I needed more/better storage.
