this and that

When it is time to sort the projects and clean up after myself, I find bits and pieces that I can not resist sewing together. I evidently missed a purple zipper for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

zipper and easy breezy

And, the snails trail are ready to start over with such cute and quick little pieces, and, boom, I have started another round of snail trail blocks.

but no, I tore the name off the package when I planted them.

We have a new green bean we are trying this year, and, it is fun and yummy. It grows purple and cooks green. It tastes great, too.

more blossom time

I made blossom time blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I wasn't sure how I would fit green into the mix since there was so much green already with the stems and leaves. I think I found some greens that were ok. I used 2 1/2 in strips to cut these. I used pieces that were at least 8 inches long. If I had any left over, in green, I cut for more stems and leaves. I need a piece that is at least 9 inches long to cut a set.

I planted orange mint last night to my herb garden. I have one other I am trying to grow called mojito mint. It didn't start well under grow lights so we will see if it can direct sow. Today is a plant sale at a church to raise money for missions. I think we are out of places to plant here but, it is always fun to see what others are growing. I hope you all have something growing this summer.

My favorite tomatoes to eat are cherokee purple and yellow stripey. We decided to grow mortgage lifter for canning, because of the name and back story was fun. The names are just fun.

scrap play

Just a little fun with triangles. I had a pile on the sewing table and rather than put them in "the bucket", I just made a few beauty baskets. And yes, I dug some more out of the bucket and made a bigger mess. But, I was a happy girl.

I made a few yellow easy breezy blocks, lately, as leader/ enders. It takes 11 steps to complete one. It's a simple block, but, several steps.

I have a little more done on boho heart.

progress

I have 5 quilts I am actively progressing on, but, every now and then, I slip in a few blocks for fun. I have been concentrating on my hunter's star blocks as leader/ enders. Each block takes 3 passes.

So, I have neglected my official leader / ender project -fish school/go fish. I have missed them. I did just a few so that they would not feel too abandoned.

go fish leader/ender challenge
The same with easy breezy....

I have been cutting  these in the rsc colors of the month. These are from reds, January.

I quick sent the HSTS through the machine for a couple of anvil blocks.

A new goal for March

March is here already, and, so far, it is coming in like a lamb which means it will leave like lion. I have a one monthly goal for March. I have the top ready for shine, and, I want to quilt it and bind it this month. I started this pattern in January 2020 as part of the rainbow scrap challenge. After I started, I was smitten.  It is a free pattern offered on moda bake shop. It will be nice to get it finished.

While I am waiting on the next color for March and the rainbow scrap challenge, I am sewing scraps

soothing sewing

I just needed a little light sewing. It's easy to pick up some of my "growing" projects and just sew. I don't have to look for anything or read the instructions or scratch my head. And my pile "grows". I sure like sewing with shirt material. It feels so nice.

I need goals and plans, but, sometimes I just need some meditation sewing. I enjoy picking up 2 pieces of fabric and sending them through the machine.

string candy

We have had a winter snow storm that has been very beautiful.

I have cut for easy breezy, fish school, and the stashbuster 2022 in aqua/ teal for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I can sit and do that.

what color is this one? I wish it could make up it's mind

I only had enough energy and aqua to make 4 blocks this month for my candy quilt.

red scraps and rsc

I started sorting for the  rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy with 1 1/2 inch strips in red. I went through the entire gallon bag of strips and pulling any that were not at least 12 inches long. I had a nice little pile. I cut as many as I could into 1 1/2 inch squares for easy breezy blocks if there was 4 matching. If there was at least 3 inches left I put them together to make 4 patches, some will be used for blossom time and some will just be made into random 4 patches. The goal is to clean up the strip bins this year. I have used strips for pieces of scrap blocks and left the bits and pieces to get in the way,

For 2 inch strips I went to my civil war reproduction scraps to make a block I saw on pinterest, that I want to make. It is an old block called star and cross, a variation of churn dasher. I cut 9 sets from the red scraps. I still need to cut hsts before I can sew them. And I am not sure they will get sewn each month. But, at least I will cut each month.

I get a pass on Boho heart this month, since, all the red and pink blocks are finished.

I found my pattern for razzle dazzle and I think I am waiting to make that at another time, but it is still early in the month.

I sewed the hsts for candy. They are ready to go

Not very exciting, but, progress. We have single digits here in Indiana, still no real snow.

red letter day

I have the next word for my rsc project - this time in red.

can you believe 2021 is almost over? Time has flown and now for some odd reason, people are asking me if I am ready for Christmas. Christmas? what? umm no.

rainbow scraps in aqua

I have added a new word to my rsc project. I had forgotten how much I like to make letters. I use Lori Holt's alphabet book.

I am trying to prepare for next year and a new rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy project. I want to do strings and crumbs by color so I have started sorting the big bucket into colors. I was afraid  I wouldn't find enough of each color, but, alas, I have plenty. And some have already been sorted into baggies. If I do a little every day, I may have it sorted for the new year.

I have a few easy breezy blocks I made this week. I was doing one every day but now its sporadic with new projects.

boho heart progress

I have avoided working on boho heart until the last minute. It seems complicated to me. But, I finally sat down and sewed a section together, and it has encouraged me to continue. This is the top left part of the heart.

I have the blocks ready to go for the next "row" under this piece.

a few snails trails

I have neglected my sewing projects lately, and I wondered if it was because I need to do a little more recreational sewing. It has to be fun or who wants to do it. Setting goals is still a great idea until it seems like work. SO, I grabbed a bit of my work in progress sewing and made a few snails trail blocks using recycled shirts. I used all the pieces I had cut. It felt good to just sew.

still making easy breezy blocks in 1 1/2 in

We have harvested the last of the hot peppers. I sliced them and dehydrated them. They were noxoius. I was prepared with double mask and gloves - my favorite accessories haha. I have enough hot peppers for a long time.

fishing

While I was shopping at Joann fabrics, I ran into an old high school friend. The fact that she was in a fabric store told me why we were friends. haha.  We haven't seen each other in 10 years. She is still the the smart, funny, sweet person she was all those years ago.

Connie, me

I have more fish finished as a leader/ender. I don't know how I want to arrange them in a quilt. Right now, I like this one best.

I decided to sew a few hsts for the wedding ring I am doing every now and then. I can trim them in the evening while we watch TV.

shirt anvil blocks

I have been working on finishing some old ufos to the 'to be quilted' stage. I am ready to stop making borders for a little while. It was time for some soothing sewing and making a little progress on the shirt anvil blocks. I really like these. Using shirt fabric is one of my favorite ways to make quilts. The cotton just feels so nice.

And I found a few scraps hanging around the machine that wanted me to sew them.

orange tiny houses

I have orange tiny houses for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I may have 2 rounds of oranges in the box already. But every year the scraps are different. And, it will take forever to make enough tiny houses  to make a quilt.

I found a box of leftover pieces from Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt frolic, and decided to put the HSTS together as pinwheels. I have them next to the sewing machine and I use them as leader/enders until they are gone.

leader/enders

I am off to guild open sew today and a jelly roll race. I am excited as I will hopefully, make the borders for sea swept....with a jelly roll that I made.

half a carolina chain

I have just about reached the long center rows on the top half of carolina chain.

And I am adding the last batch of 3 rows to the bottom part of the quilt. I cut Carolina chain in 2017. It is from the the book addicted to scraps by Bonnie Hunter. It was also in the quilltmaker  magazine, June/ July 2010

I used easy breezies and fish school for leader/ enders

I saw this pattern at Joann over the weekend. It looks like a great scrap buster. Although, I am not planning on starting anything new. Nope I am not.

The end of the garden season is bittersweet. It is sad to see it go, but, great to turn our attention somewhere else.
