red letter day

 I have the next word for my rsc project - this time in red.

can you believe 2021 is almost over? Time has flown and now for some odd reason, people are asking me if I am ready for Christmas. Christmas? what? umm no.

Little tiny squares and I are having fun in red for the rainbow scrap challenge. Some of the blocks turn out better than others. I don't know if they were not cut accurately or I get in a hurry and sew them too quickly. It's hard to be patient. Each block is different and interesting in it's own way, and, I want to see it.

I was able to sew the red row for the row x row. I have only yellow to go. I plan on putting the rows together soon. I can hardly wait. The rainbow scrap challenge is a favorite of mine. It keeps me motivated and inspired, but, it is a lesson in patience. I am more of a hare in my real life, and the rainbow challenge is more of a turtle kind of thing.

And, then, I have two more psp20 blocks

I had an idea to try the waffle blocks. Using the smaller scraps. This makes a great leader/ender patch for in between the lines. But, they are small.

tiny reds

I couldn't wait to dig into red for the rainbow scrap challenge in September. I knew I had no shortage of red scraps - they are everywhere. Next to blue, I have more red scraps than any other color. Probably because, there are so many reds. Many of my scraps are gifted to me, and, it is a well used color among quilters. I get a lot of  small scraps in red.

I made the tiny houses from 2 inch strip bin. I look for the shortest strip and cut it 2 1/2 inches and 3 1/2 inches, hopefully, until I use it all.

These tiny stars are made next from the cut off triangle from the roofs of the houses, and a box of triangle cut offs. I use 2 inch strips to cut the background.

The shine block is made from a jelly roll I chose at the beginning of the year, and, this, is the closet to red I had from the strips. If you squint, it looks almost red.

It looks like I have 4 of the 6 rainbow projects caught up for September, with 2 to go. Maybe, I will pull out something old from the project closet. Or maybe, I will get complacent and forget.

down country roads

I am not sure why the first quilt I work on each month for the rainbow scrap challenge, is country roads. I guess because it is so easy to get started. I grab a few red 1 1/2 inch strips, stack them, cut them, and presto they are done. Nothing like instant gratification. There is a link at the bottom for the pattern.

I am sure I will be working on these next year.                         

I ran out of August before I ran out of purple projects to show. I made a purple row for my row x row quilt. never mind the messy table.

seeing red

I sorted through my red scrap drawer and used up any smaller pieces. The bigger pieces I sorted by whether they would look good with a white background or a cream background. So far, most of the rainbow quilts I am making use a white background. I may have to challenge myself to make a cream based quilt rainbow style. Oh, I just thought of something - squirrel

I made checkerboards in red for Cynthia Brunz's design woven checkerboard. She blogs at Quilting is more fun than housework. This is the second quilt of hers I am doing for the rainbow scrap challenge. I am also doing wiggle time.

I have another project that will need 4 patches.

And I am hoping to make at the end of the rainbow, so, the red crumb blocks are made and cut for that one.

I am really grateful for the rainbow scrap challenge. Besides some really fun quilts I get to make, I have one (and only one ) neat and tidy scrap drawer.

letters and words

I have been having fun making letters again. I think they are really easy. I am using the Lori Holt spelling bee book. I have really enjoyed how well it is put together, and the instructions are great.
I especially like that I can cut a few strips in common sizes and then use off of them with each letter. So, most of the sizes are common among the letters. I don't feel like I am digging around for something else, or left with unuseable scraps.

My biggest problem is I am angle challenged. And I think the pictures are a big help for someone like me.

These pieces are a bit tricky, since I need more than one direction of corner.

I am making a quote quilt and I am doing it rainbow scrap challenge style. So, all the letters I need for red in January are done.

I am looking at the pictures and feeling like I want to play the "make as many words as you can" game. I was always pretty good at that game at a shower.

Another quilt I want to make for the rainbow scrap challenge is the Emily Herrick Crayon quilt. It is great to start with a basic color of red.
I could cut these pieces from a 2 1/2 in strips which I still need to reduce.

I sewed them together in pairs and then 4s etc.

As a leader and ender I am sewing together the triangle pieces for pinwheel fancy

And a crayon was born.

rsc flying home

I am making a new rainbow scrap challenge quilt this year called flying home. I had enough of this scrap red to make 5 blocks. But it is all gone now. hooray.

 Each Tuesday, Angela at so scrappy is introducing a Tiny Tuesday block. By the end of the year, we will have enough for a sampler rainbow quilt. The first one was string blocks.

We have actual snow. It started through the night and is still snowing. It is so pretty and quiet.

I am already in love with this pattern. It is called wiggle time by Cynthia Brunz of Quilting is more fun than housework ( gotta love that name) I am making a rainbow version to follow along with the rainbow scrap challenge. It was easy to cut.

The units were easy.

And the assembly was easy with nothing to match.

And it looks great. I can already imagine it in different colors. But, for now, I will be patient and enjoy it one color at a time rainbow style.

squared away

This is the last red saturday for the rainbow scrap challenge. I am caught up and ready for a new color. These are this month's squared away block.

I have last year's rainbow pineapple blossom quilt all ready to quilt and waiting it's turn.

red birch trees

I took birch trees with me to my small Friday group. We meet at the library. When I arrived, I realized I didn't have my cutting mat, and these need a lot of cutting. Fortunately, the time was not lost, because the library has a closet of sewing machines and stuff for the patrons to use. I guess it was a grant of some kind. I did get to work on these until the power went out from a quick storm. We waited 10 minutes and then called it a day.

I thought I had planned and cut for six blocks in red, but there were only four in my bag. I think the other two were separated as, I excitedly cleaned up my cutting table for my new cutting mat.
I purchased it at the Marion Indiana quilter's hall of fame quilt show. I have 2 of the rulers and really like them. My cutting mat was showing enough wear, that I knew it was time to make a decision any way.

As soon as I find and make those rascally birch blocks, I will be caught up with the rainbow scrap challenge for the month of red.

tokoyo subway quilt and red

This week I worked on Tokoyo subway quilt as part of the rainbow scrap challenge. Each month, I add a new color to the quilt. I am using an iron -on 2 inch grid interfacing. I add the squares, but can't really sew it together until all the colors are added.

This month was the first time, I had a block that was complete.

And, I actually had 2. I debated about whether I should sew it now or wait for all the blocks to be finished.

I couldn't wait.. It was a piece of cake to fold over and sew each row. After I sew all the vertical rows, I clipped at each intersection to sew the horizontal rows.

soul searching in red

A new month and a new color for the rainbow scrap challenge. Can you guess?

While I was waiting for the new color, I put a row together of soul searching. These blocks are big 20 x 24 inches, so three will make a good size row.
There is something magical about this pattern. The cutting sizes are easy to remember and go quickly. And then the block is in 4 parts. And when the 4 parts go together, it is so fun. Almost a surprise. While I am sewing this block, I keep imagining and wanting to make other quilts from it. And then, doing it one color a month is such a treat. Maybe, I will make one every year for the rainbow scrap challenge. Well now, I am sure getting ahead of myself.
