phd 2021

I have had a hard time this year setting goals for next year. Maybe, because it has been an uncertain year. And yet, I finished the most ufo projects I have ever done in a single year. Now, that I think of it, I might be tired of finishing, but, I have many more to finish. I am not sure how to find the balance between finishing to accomplish, and starting new to enjoy. The more I stick to a list, the less I quilt.

Still, I've made my list for next year and the PHD 21.

1. Double wedding ring. This keeps showing up on my list of goals. It still intimidates me. I want to do the traditional scallop border....

2.frolic mystery quilt. This was last year's quiltville mystery and I had it done pretty quickly, but, I wanted to finish older ufos, and this was sidelined.

3. end of the rainbow. I think the white space makes me nervous to quilt. This was a rsc project for 2019. I really like it and hope to finish it this year.

And, with all the quilts I finished this year, I didn't finish any rainbow scrap challenge quilts. I finished the tops of 5 or 6, but, didn't get them quilted. And there are none on my 12 PHD2021 list. So, I need to fix that.

I think that is why I am trying to not start any new rsc projects this year, but, only finish them. I have a few to carry over. But, Angela has hinted there might be a group project.....I would HAVE to do that.

workshop to do

I lead a workshop Saturday for making donation quilts for my quilt guild. I love how everybody has a different vision for what they are making. And, everyone of them is wonderful. 

I like that Cindy's back ground was black and white prints.

Julie was using 30s prints, and, chose lavendar to sash her blocks - nice

Kathy was using a great combo of brown and black and grays. It was elegant

Jean was using scrappy blues.

Sandy was using batiks. They were lovely together.

Jan was using I spy fabrics and solids - very cute.

I showed them how I make my little wonky stars. Everyone tried one, but, I didn't really turn anyone to the dark ( scrappy) side.

woven finish

We had the prettiest, fluffy snowfall, and, I was anxious to get a photo of this recent finish. What a fun combination. I started this quilt last year, as part of the rainbow scrap challenge. Every month I made the 4 patches in the color of the month from 2 1/2 inch squares. Otherwise, it would have been a quick and easy quilt to make.

I used a variegated thread and a free motion swirl pattern. It finished at 54 x 60 inches, and has 429 pieces, and used 7 1/4  yards of fabric ( mostly scraps ). I used my sewing machine for the binding. I am getting happier with the results of machine binding.

The back was a really nice sheet from goodwill. The legs were from my husband. lol

This quilt is part of my one monthly goal for February and one of my PHD 2020.

I'm pretty excited to have woven checkerboards as a top. Now that I see the picture, I think I will add at least a black border. hmmm...

I really like seeing all the different scraps in this quilt that I used as part of the rainbow scrap challenge, and, it seems, I rarely use black, because, I had lots of options in the black scrap basket.

At friday quilt group, I had a chance to layout the woven checkerboard quilt on the floor. Cynthia of Quilting is more fun than housework, had made this quilt last year and I really liked it. I have been making the double 4 patch as part of the rainbow scrap challenge this year. It is time to actually sew it together.

I also started putting the wonky courthouse square together in 4s. I can't wait to finish it. It is using up bits and bobs of scraps.

I used my purple 2 1/2 inch strips to make 4 patches for an Irish chain quilt

A little rainbow sewing

I have been feeling better every day, still, not very chatty. Yesterday,  I sat and sewed one seam in my sewing room. I have enjoyed looking through the pink scraps. I made a pink crayon, and 4 patches for woven checkerboard.

I had the chance to cut the alphabet letters that I needed in pink for the quote quilt. Once, I feel like really sewing again, it shouldn't take long to make them.

I was in the left lane, and I noticed the car up ahead was in the right lane at a dead stop. I wondered what was wrong. Fortunately, I slowed to be sure everything was all right. Then I realized we were waiting on a new family of ducks. Oh, they were so cute and so very tiny. I wish our world took better care of our small and vulnerable things.

I have blue woven checkerboard blocks made for the rainbow scrap challenge.

And a blue scraptastic star is finished.

I was in the mood to sort through my batik bucket. And blue was right on top. I am trying to fold and mark the fabric. I didn't think I had very many batiks, but, I was surprised when I took the time to get it all sorted. I will need to use it in a new project. Oh, shucks.

Orange is such a great color. It can look great hiding among other colors (fall colors ) or jump right out at you. Still, I don't have that much of it in my stash. hmmmmm
I did make 2 flying home blocks.

And, 5 woven checkerboard blocks

and an orange crayon.

Notice the green grass that I can use as a background for photos. I couldn't do that at the beginning of this year's rainbow challenge.

A little bit of aqua

I have been playing in the aqua scraps. I made the flying home blocks in light and dark. I just saw this block called the humility block in an old magazine. I know why... I often get the pieces turned around and have to unpick and resew. And it is an easy block. sigh.. I have made some interesting variations, though. But, no chance, of pride on making this one for me.

I made 4 patches for the someday irish chain quilt.

I am filling the box, probably for next year.

I made the checkerboard 4 patches for woven checkerboard.

 And, I found some florals for florabunda, and, although it is not rainbow quilt, I found them, and cut them while they were there.

sorting and sewing

With a little bit of hmmming, and hawing, and head scratching, I have put two rows of the double wedding ring quilt together. And not just any two rows. The outside row and row 2.  It looks pretty good. and it was just a question of me being very careful to double check what was next to what when I sewed.
Just because of the sheer bulk, I will join 2 rows  together first and then join 2 sets together.

Most of the week I have been sorting through my green scraps in an attempt to find some order to the scrap chaos. This was my 2 1/2 in strip bin.

This is after sorting the big pieces of strips and stacking them to order. I am not thrilled with the colors, they seem dark and grumpy.

And this is the short pieces that I decided I would just decide and cut for many of my on- going projects. It feels good to get it organized.

I sorted through my red scrap drawer and used up any smaller pieces. The bigger pieces I sorted by whether they would look good with a white background or a cream background. So far, most of the rainbow quilts I am making use a white background. I may have to challenge myself to make a cream based quilt rainbow style. Oh, I just thought of something - squirrel

I made checkerboards in red for Cynthia Brunz's design woven checkerboard. She blogs at Quilting is more fun than housework. This is the second quilt of hers I am doing for the rainbow scrap challenge. I am also doing wiggle time.

I have another project that will need 4 patches.

And I am hoping to make at the end of the rainbow, so, the red crumb blocks are made and cut for that one.

I am really grateful for the rainbow scrap challenge. Besides some really fun quilts I get to make, I have one (and only one ) neat and tidy scrap drawer.
