aqua question mark

It's going to be a beautiful fall day here- Blue sky and sunshine but 32 degrees. We have no real commitments and can stay home and do some work. We had three doctor appointments last week -all is well.

I worked on the full stop quilt that Angela is doing for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

I procrastinated the question mark block since the color was aqua. I finally have them made and ready to go. They weren't as difficult as I was afraid they would be for me. I think I am missing the dots, yet.

I sewed the orange 16 patches  blocks for the Debby Brown color blocks quilt along

I found this free quilt along with Debby Brown  from Alycia at quilty girl

here are the yellow squares  here are the green squares  here are the pink squares  here are the blue squares  here are the red squares

I finished on the go quilt this week.

orange star

I forgot about scraptastic stars for February. So, I have an orange to share for the last Saturday of February for the rainbow scrap challenge. I had cut the pieces, but, forgot to make the block until I thought about the link up today.

I played with bitty pumpkins in orange using 3 1/2 inch orange squares just for fun.

I am ready for another color,

orange cross block

I didn't have very many orange squares, and the row x row quilt required 2 5/8 inch squares ( weird size for me). So I started cutting big chunks into 2 5/8 squares and 2 1/2 inch squares and whatever finished the scrap

The triangles called for strange sizes cut diagonally, but after doing one that way, I knew my accuquilt dies would work.

It needed a little trimming.

I only did one row this month, and will do the other orange row later, for the month of color that I don't need for the quilt.

so far I have done in orange
1. irish chain
2. country roads
3. wonky star
4. shine
5. houses
6. and the row by row

shine blocks

I have the orange blocks finished for shine quilt. I almost missed this second orange, because it was more coral to me. But, it really is orange next to pink. It definitely looks orange on the computer.

I fell in love with cathy's  at sane crazy crumbly quilts  tiny houses quilt.
She has been making houses with the rainbow scrap challenge for awhile, and, I had fun searching for them on her blog. And, then, I wanted to try them too. They are fun and dandy.

I think all I have left for orange is the row x row. I have cut the pieces and hopefully will have them done next week.

tiny triangles and wonky stars

My friend Judy gave me this little pint size bag of triangle cut offs from a project she was making. I saw orange in there, so I dumped the bag. Orange is the color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge, and I have a few blocks that need orange. I was specifically looking for pieces for a small wonky star block. Well that started me down a rabbit hole, again. Judy has the best scraps.

The triangles were all different sizes, since, she had just cut these with scissors from the back of a flip corner. I picked out the orange, and, I started sewing them together. I realized if I trimmed them down, I could use them for the shoofly blocks, too. With boxes and rooms full of lovely fabric, I don't know why these little bits were so fascinating. But,...they...were.

Last week's to do list:
1. borders for woven checkerboard - done
2. frolic blocks - done
3. row x row orange - I am still cutting
4. find a back for sand castles - done

This week's to do list:
1. quilt woven
2. bind woven
3. sashings and corners for frolic
4. row x row orange
5. make shine blocks for orange

a bit of orange

I am using a new ironing philosophy to see if I like the end results better. I have more twisted seams than I would like at the final stages of a quilt top. I am going to wait until I piece the top to really iron my blocks. I want to see if waiting until the end helps me nest the seams better when joining blocks. So the pictures of blocks will look a little wonky when I share. Who knows, maybe all I will learn is that I have only postponed the inevitable.

I was surprised how quickly I wanted to make country roads in orange. It wasn't even a planned project for the year, but they are so fun.

I made 8 blocks for the irish chain quilt.

I had so much fun with country roads, I did some more and in green.

tiny tuesday progress

I have to catch up with all the blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge.  Angie at Quilting on the Crescent. shared a tiny tuesday block last month that I have finished. I made a mistake with it, but it stays this way. It was supposed to have the orange print in all four corners.

Sally at The Objects of Design shared this cute block last month. It's called bear bowtie.

I was intimidated by this one. I am not very skilled at applique, and the reverse applique was scarey. But, once I made the decision to do it, it was fun.

orange letters

I just barely finished these in May for the rainbow scrap challenge, just in time to squeak into a blue month. I am usually done and ready for a new color a week ahead, and, then drumming my fingers for the new month. Not May, I have really been surprised it is a new month. I ran out of scraps and had to cut a little bit of yardage. These are the orange letters I need for a quote quilt.

I am still cleaning out bags and buckets. If I don't know where to put them I am taking the time to deal with them. I found this extra block, in pieces, that I didn't use in a finished quilt. So, I made an orphan block. What can I say, it was fun to make a block. And I have a box for orphan blocks, but not almost orphan blocks.

the end of the rainbow

This is officially the last Saturday in May and for orange at the rainbow scrap challenge. I am not really finished with the color yet. I haven't even started orange words for my quilt. But I did get the "made" fabric ready for the end of the rainbow quilt. Each month I make 6 blocks. I only have one more color and then all the pieces will be ready to assemble.

There are some rows that I had enough finished blocks to partially assemble them.

I made 32- 4 patches for an irish chain quilt I am hoping to make.

And orange was the last color I needed for wiggle time quilt. Next month, I can put that great quilt together.

pineapple new round

Yesterday was hijacked by my husband's heart and atrial fibrillation. They decided to shock him into rhythm. It was a long ordeal, and more waiting time than fixing time. It started in the morning, and, I thought we had circumvented the hospital by going to the doctor's office. Our doctor was out for the day, and his partner decided to be a bit more aggressive. So, we ended up spending a few hours in the hospital for a cardiac conversion.
He is much better and home. We have a million more medications and instructions, getting older isn't for sissies.

My little bit of sewing time, was to trim a new round of pineapple blocks using the creative grids template. I have never tried any other method for making a pineapple block, but this seems really easy. I started it here. There are squares in the center that line up the center square and them the angle of the template makes quick work of cutting.

I made a few alphabet letters in orange for the rainbow scrap challenge.

And a few more scrappy HSTs

rainbow scrap progress

Orange is such a great color. It can look great hiding among other colors (fall colors ) or jump right out at you. Still, I don't have that much of it in my stash. hmmmmm
I did make 2 flying home blocks.

And, 5 woven checkerboard blocks

and an orange crayon.

Notice the green grass that I can use as a background for photos. I couldn't do that at the beginning of this year's rainbow challenge.

May one monthly goal

My May one monthly goal is a the same as the April goal only taking the next steps. I have made it more challenging by upending my sewing room for a remodel. I am not sure why I picked this exact time to try something new, but, it is a big mess right now as we put everything to rights. I had no idea how many little containers of little scrap pieces I kept shoving to the back and ignoring.  The big change is turning the corner with an ikea table. I am going to really like the space to the left of the sewing machine for borders and big quilts and bindings. The corner piece was bigger than I expected, so everything had to move around for it to fit.

The sewing machine has been silent but I have used the treadle to make this string block, even though, I had decided no more strings for awhile, and had cleaned up the area. But, all those little baskets of little pieces I found had to go somewhere.

The ironing board is at best all covered with undecided stuff from the sewing area, and I haven't really had a place to press anything yet. I did find the crayon for the rainbow scrap challenge accessible, and, I could sew the strip together for orange for the color for May.

I am making progress and hopefully, I will back to a regular quilting routine.

For May I want to assemble allietare, quilt and bind smith mountain morning, swap our circa 1880 blocks, and keep current with the rainbow scrap challenge. oh and hook up my sewing machine.

squared away orange

Trying to stay with just orange this month, I made choices for squared away block. Two of them, I liked but the small dot, and the slightly darker orange print, ummm no.

better

this is me sewing in the middle of my double wedding ring mess. Which is why I hadn't worked on the squared away blocks until the last minute.

I didn't want to mess with my piles for the double wedding ring, but stuff was mixing up any way, so I did a bit of cleanup. And finally, we had blocks.

orange you glad it's not banana

The plan for this month's birch trees was to do two light and two dark orange, but I didn't have another light orange. I am thinking it might be time to start assembling this quilt. I wanted 42 blocks - 6x7, and I might have that many now. A count is in order. And then a plan.

I worked on birch trees at Friday quilt group. Have you noticed how much faster a project goes when in the company of other quilters?

Since Linda and I are also working on our wedding ring quilts. Sue brought her Mother's double wedding ring quilt to share with us. It was spectacular. We are thinking the fabrics look more like the 40s and 50s. Sue remembers that her Mother didn't want to make the center white in case it would yellow, so she chose pink.

It's hand pieced and hand quilted. What a treasure.
