garden party corner

I've made progress on assembling garden party. I have the second corner ready. I have everything else ready, it's time to do the long rows assembly, and see it together. First corner here.

I have been distracted by bonnie hunter's new free pattern wonky courthouse square. They are very fun to make. I am treadling the blocks every chance I get.

The butterfly bush is still holding onto it's fall color despite the snow.

garden party

I have a corner of garden party together. I am very thrilled with how it looks. That is why I am a scrappy quilter. I love how a quilt with disparate fabrics can look like they were meant to be together. If I wax philosophical, that is how great human relationships are created. Enough, deep thinking, scrappy quilts are just fun.  I started sewing this quilt 6 months ago, and I have made great progress.

I have already been thinking about 2020 and what I want to accomplish. Thankfully, this year has been about a great fabric upheaval, and sorting, and a bit of organization. I hope next year will be about settling into the new storage, and finding what I want to make. Especially if the fabric part of quilting is easily accessible.
I start rehab for my back today, and that could be the end of my energy for a time.
I am happy with my finishes totals for the last years and I want to continue.
I really like the rainbow scrap challenge, but I am not sure what I want to make with that, yet.
I have a new rug hooking project gifted by someone who isn't in love with the project anymore. I am still working on the snowmen rug, so I won't start it right away.

sewing rows

I have started putting the rows together for the quiltville garden party quilt. It is set on point, so, some rows go together quickly, and, some take forever. But, each row is so fun. I haven't laid it out, I just grab a block that looks good with the ones in the row, and add it. I try to mix my favorites, and keep an eye for the uglies. I started sewing this quilt 6 months ago, and I have made great progress.

I have another snowman finished for my rug. He is a little plain, but, he has a fancy scarf. It is becoming easier to rug hook with my back.

setting triangles

I need to make setting triangles for Bonnie Hunter's garden party. The count for the 9 patch units included what I would need for the triangles, so I didn't need to make the 3 square unit. I did have to cut and make the 2 square unit and 1 square unit.

I need one more piece for the bottom, and it will be the extras from the 9 patch units.

And our youngest Grandchild - isn't he a cute lil pumpkin?

garden party chain

I have made 81 chain blocks for my garden party quilt. I really like looking at them like this. The stacks look impressive. It takes a bit of time to make these, and eventually they will be part of a quilt.
Now, I need to trim these and start the setting triangles.

One of my unexpected finds at the Indy quilt show, was an actual rug hooking project. It was in the garage sale among some bags of scraps. I just had to bring it home. I have a plan to make hooked chair pads for my dining room chairs. I have one done, and this will be a great addition.

trimming garden party

It's finally time to trim my garden party blocks since they are all done. It seems that no matter how I try to be accurate, I have a bit to trim. It doesn't take much extra to throw me off when I assemble. I would prefer to fudge more by not trimming, where I could line the pieces up even if they are not exactly right, but I have trouble with that.

I and a good quilty friend attended a big quilt show in Indianapolis this past weekend. The quilts were amazing, and I found some real treasures in the "garage sale", especially after everything went to half price. I really enjoyed the antique quilt bed turning. I learned so much. These are the quilts of the featured quilter.

I would love to know how to make the circle blocks in the border. Anyone know what they are?

garden party

This is the perfect project for me to work on these days. It can be compartmentalized and is repetitive enough that I don't have to think.
I am making these 9 patches as part of garden party quilt that is a bonnie hunter pattern from her book addicted to scraps.  After sewing a million 1 1/2 inch black and white strips together, I subcut them into the 2 sets I need to make 9 patches.

I love just feeding the pieces through my sewing machine. I just let the rhythm sooth the mind and soul.

And if that wasn't enough, I have cute little 9 patches when I am done.

one monthly goal finish

At the beginning of the month, my one monthly goal for August was to get On ringo lake mystery quilt to a top. and to have all the garden party blocks finished and the chaining blocks started.
Here is the top. When I put it together, I discovered that there was a mistake on the center row, and I had to take it apart and redo the sashings in the center row. At this point, I have one more sashing near the center that has to be flipped.

I finished all the garden party blocks, and I cut the strips for the chaining blocks.

more exciting news..
My orchid is blooming. I have had it a couple of years, and was beginning to lose hope it would bloom again. It is just lovely.

pink star

Great news, my hubby took me to Joann yesterday. I am 5 weeks out from surgery, so I haven't been in some time. I didn't make it all the way through a shopping visit, but I got my feet wet. They had an extra 30% off their fabric clearance, and another 10% if I finish the bolt. I picked 2, and then, hubby told them all of it, and stood in line to pay while I went and sat in the car. It was so fun. And ice cream afterwards, too.
I am still a little behind in sewing my projects for the rainbow scrap challenge. The pink is from July and the color for August is bright blue.

And, finally, all 100 garden party blocks have been sewn. It's time to sew the chaining blocks that will be the alternate blocks. I am doing them in black and white.

garden party

I am so close to finishing the 100 garden party blocks. I have a few minutes each day to sew. I made kits with these blocks so they are easy to just grab and sew a few.

I am getting stronger each day, but the hardest part of recovery are the limitations- no bending, twisting, squatting, lifting. I wish I had prepared my sewing room for the limitations. Much of what I would want to work on is off limits. While my husband is home taking care of me, we spend a little time each day, trying to move a few supplies into my "moving " space. I am learning to love my grabber tool. Funny how I am not trying to make laundry possible......or bathroom cleaning

clean and organized

My first thought when I saw this was, why hadn't I thought of this. Then I realized the "real" me was already thinking, this is a good reason not to finish anything.

After the glow of finishing a quilt, and I enter the sewing room again for the first time after, I wonder what kind of mad woman has been in my room? Is there any way the "real" me could turn into the tidy me? But, I did just finish En Provence, so I will give it a try.

I have sewn a few more Bonnie Hunter garden party blocks.

and a few Bonnie Hunter Carolina chain blocks.

tiny tuesday

I needed to get back to making my tiny Tuesday blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge. I am a "tiny"  bit behind. haha I have finished May and orange. I have 3 for June and blue yet to do.

I have a snowman finished for my rug hooking. I don't know why I am dragging my feet on this rug. The snowmen are adorable and they are easy to hook.

I am getting very close to having all the garden party blocks sewn. I will need to cut 1 1/2 inch strips for the chain blocks.

Tomorrow is surgery.

how I kit projects

I had a comment from rebecca grace

Those little blocks are darling! How do you prep those garden blocks to make them portable? Do you have all the fabrics selected and cut out for each block in a baggie, or an assortment of cut strips that you work from, selecting what works together as you go? I would like to do better with portable sewing but I struggle with having something ready to go as I walk out the door.

I really liked this question. It might be a very long answer. It all begins with a mess of scraps or a quilt I want to make someday. I keep a list of quilts I really like and maybe make someday. These are mostly quilts I am not stressed about making. I have over 200 on the list. If I ever get to them great, if not.. oh well. Quilts on this list can change their status randomly. If I decide it is the perfect project for me at the moment, I move it to the planning list. For example, all of Bonnie Hunter's patterns are on the maybe someday list, except the ones I have already started. This year I picked 2 of them to work on for the year, garden party and sand castles. Both of them went from maybe someday to plan, to cut, and then sew.

In the planning stage, I checked to see how work can be batched. Sand castles needed string pieces which I can do during tv time, so I cut the foundation papers and put them on the treadle in the living room where I do the string piecing. I didn't worry about cutting the rest until strings were done.

Garden party needed cutting, and all of it was from 1 1/2 inch strips, and no specialty cuts. I chose it for that reason. So for several nights I had a bucket of  1 1/2 inch strips by my chair in the living room, a tray, cutting mat, rotary cutter, and ruler, and I started cutting. Each block needed a 16 1/2 in long piece to cut 4 matching pieces 2 1/2 inches and a 6 1/2 inch piece. I also needed a coordinating fabric that was at least 10 inches long to cut into 2 1/2 inches rectangles. I needed 100 sets. I would pull one strip and see if it was at least 16 1/2 inches, if not, 10 inches. Here is where I can get into trouble, but, at this point, I throw anything not big enough into the string bucket, as I sort through the bucket and try to empty it. I didn't think to cut the single 1 1/2 inch square at this time, but, that would have helped.

I start matching fabrics and folding them together, as I go along. It is random and once the decision is made, I don't change the combo. I put 10 sets into each bag.

I cut a gaggle of the black on white 1 1/2 inch strips and throw them in the box. And at this point, the project goes into time out and waits for me to need an away from home project. In this case, it was almost a year.

If it wasn't a scrap quilt, I would still cut all the pieces ahead of time and put them in the project box with the instructions, but, I would cut all at once instead of over time. And if I am using "real" fabric, I am more likely to start working on it right away. I can't cut very well away from home. I am too distracted to cut accurately. I have plenty of quilts I am working on at any given time, so I have the luxury of being patient.

I have been very fortunate to have 2 consistent times each week that I sew from home, so it is easier to plan ahead. I hope this helps.

mess of sewing

I have 3 projects going to the left of my sewing machine- liberty ( actual project), 4 patches for sand castles, and blossom time. I use the 4 patches as leader/ enders, but, sometimes, I just want to stick a tulip in while I am working on the liberty quilt. If I keep it nearby, It is easy to feed it through in between other projects.

I have more garden party blocks from my Friday sew group. Rebecca asked how I kitted these blocks as an away project. I will probably explain that tomorrow or Wednesday.
