one monthly goal finish

This was my goals for October. It is the 31st and BOO and it is time to report just how well I did.

For my one monthly goal, I want to make my Granddaughter's unicorn quilt, and finish piecing orca bay mystery quilt, and continue working on the double wedding ring.

I have all the pieces cut and sewn to add around the unicorn quilt for my Granddaughter. I just have to do the math and put an inner border first.

I have a big stack of double wedding ring melons finished. And it is time to add them to the rows and assemble. I am still very much in love with how this coming together.

I am close to assembling the orca bay mystery quilt. I am piecing the border which includes a gazillion HSTs.

So I would say I accomplished my October goals for one monthly goal. It's time to think about November. wow

template fun

Using the scrap crazy 6 templates has been fun. I haven't finished anything, but I have learned a bit about color choices. I am not of fan of the oriental look.

I have really enjoyed sewing these together. I am sure there is a smart way to cut the scrappy triangle but I am just using squares that I have constructed from scraps and then making sure it is big enough to cut a 6 1/2 inch square.

I can get both these variations using one square.

I am going to sew the quarters together like this for the inside of the quilt and then work around the edge to finish it.

How I started this quilt is here and here and here. and here and here and here and here
I have one more variation using the scrap crazy 6 template that I want to try before I put these templates away.

orca bay mystery challenge

All the ohio star blocks are finished. All the main part of the quilt is finished for Orca Bay mystery quilt. I am working on the pieced border which requires a gazillion hsts. I am cutting out the pieces a bunch at a time. And, then, the fun part starts.

Jo of Jo's country junction is trying to finish all the quilts in quiltville's string fling book before the new book is published. I am trying to finish all the mystery quilts as part of that challenge before the new mystery in November. My challenge finishes are here.

stash report October, 28, 2018

I found this cute little bundle in the guild garage sale.

Most of the pieces were in pieces or scrap size, but there was 2 fat quarters, so I am counting it as a yard. I can never have too many neutrals.

stash report

Fabric Used this Week 0 yards
Fabric Used or gone from house year to Date: 773 1/4 yards  * 400 donated

Fabric Added this Week: 1 yard
Fabric Added Year to Date: 213 3/4 yards

Net Fabric for 2018: 559 1/2 yards used more than purchased.

I sewed at least 15 min every day this week - double wedding ring and orca bay

I was decluttering a shelf unit and found this oldie tucked away. Time to work on the EPP diamond quilt. I started English paper piecing with this quilt. I was sure I didn't want to do hexagons ( what did I know?) And this seemed simple enough to be a starter project.
I have the urge to work on it .... again, until I tire of it .... again. There is no finish goal in mind, I am just enjoying the process of needle and thread.

I am glue basting these, and I have discovered I like the paper pieces over the plastic pieces.

the last birch trees

I made 2 dark green birch trees for the rainbow scrap challenge. I think it is time to start laying out the blocks and deciding on the color arrangement. I may have to take it to the library and use their tables.

And, I am already eyeing what rainbow quilts I might do next year. I found these two while cleaning a shelf. This is an Emily Herrick design that everybody was making awhile ago. I didn't get around to it, Better late than never. I like that it uses 2 1/2 inch strips.

Rainbow baby in quilty magazine May/June 2013. This is a quilt designed by Cynthia Brunz from Quilting is more fun than housework. I've had it marked since 2013, and now, I feel like I know her through the blog.

Am I the only one anxious to plan the next year's rainbow scrap challenge?

rug hooking water

I am back to hooking the lake in my Cleveland rug. I hooked more water here. Oh there will be more, I have the whole Lake Erie to hook. haha. But, I focus on one section at a time.

I started with a plain blue and a dark blue and then I married them together, being careful to scrunch up the light blue so that it would be mottled. The second piece is the color I wanted. I used that to hook Lake Erie. To get a random look, I hooked from a pile of the blue strips mixed. Sometimes it is easier to hook with the strips all lined up in a bundle, but not for the random hooking.

I have blocks 8 and 9 sewn for tokoyo subway quilt

And I have cut out another scrappy quilt I will call scrappy pinwheels.

double wedding ring arcs

All the arcs are officially done for the double wedding ring. I am slowly adding them to the second side of the melons.

We finished our Grandma week of fall break with a campfire and marshmallows. I have such great memories of my children and campfires. It is fun to watch how learning takes place while roasting marshmallows. It seems a simple thing, but it is filled with decisions and choices, and experiencing consequences. And watching a sunset is always good.

crazy 6 scrappy

I have several already made blocks of strings and crumbs to play with in experimenting with a scrappy version quilt using the scrap crazy 6 template set.
I tried to visualize a square block and pick a diagonal to sew the black and white piece.

I am trimming to 6 1/2 inches using the black and white section as the cornerstone.

How I started this quilt is here and here and here. and here and here and here.

I have started the last of the Christmas snowflake blocks

black orca

I am still piecing orca bay mystery quilt from quiltville.
All the ohio star blocks with white corners are done, and I am piecing the black ones. Phooey, the black shows imperfections more than the white. sigh...

Jo of Jo's country junction is trying to finish all the quilts in quiltville's string fling book before the new book is published. I am trying to finish all the mystery quilts as part of that challenge before the new mystery in November. My challenge finishes here

Of the ones I have not finished - 2 are ready for quilting, 2 are ready for borders and 1 has all the pieces but needs assembly. Orca Bay was started from scratch and is in process.

I have not really been in the sewing room much with my Grandchildren visiting for fall break. I am anxious to get back to my projects, if I can still remember what I was doing.
Our Grandson helped to organize the canning shelf which was a huge mess after the canning season. And he mowed for us. He is taller than I am now and a real help.

1st row tokoyo quilt

This quilt has really been a test of patience. I didn't realize it, until, I put the first row together and did a jig - well, what passes for an old lady jig. Doing just a little on a few blocks at a time, did not give me that special finish feeling. I didn't get to really see if it was going to look right either, I had to go on faith. But, now, I am really excited. woohoo.

My Granddaughters wanted to make a crochet necklace and when they discovered how fun the yarn winder was, they wanted to wind all the yarn in the house. Who knew it was that fun?

More on the tokoyo subway quilt here and here.

I had a chance to add the football helmet to my Cleveland rug for the Cleveland browns.

Vivian is working on her rug of sheep. They are so cute.

My Granddaughters and I had a movie date to see Cinderella on the big screen and eat popcorn.
And we are watching the Sara Plain and Tall series at home. Breakfast out included mickey mouse pancakes.

And for quilty inspiration- a wonderful patriotic quilt from our quilt show.
