scrappy twirl

Finally, there has been some movement on my scrappy twirl quilt. I added it to my 5 quilts project in March. I started assembly, but did not have a finish in mind, so it has spent a lot of time on a design wall. I cut pieces to create a line at the end of each row.

this is my plan so far

twirl

I laid out all the blocks again for scrappy twirl. I still am not inspired with an answer of how I want this. I did realize that I could make 1/2 hexagons to finish the edges. I could cut them from blocks or I could make all white with black. I just need to keep looking and it will come to me. I thought my notes said I made 50 blocks but there is 31- and then there's that.

twirling

I made a small assembly start on the scrappy twirl quilt which is part of my 5 quilts project. I don't have a pattern, just a picture. It is challenging to sew the Y seam but not impossible. I am thinking about how I will finish the edges. Apparently, I sure thought I was creative when I started these awhile ago LOL

I will have to do just a few at a time or I will get frustrated, or I will become good at it just before I finish. haha

twirl mistake

After all the great advice on sewing these blocks together, which, I decided was the right way to sew them together- in halves only. I went social sewing and was so busy chatting and sewing that, I forgot -doh. I didn't realize it until they were all done and I took a picture.  oh wait geesh

What to do. take them apart... maybe, or try them with the y seam. and of course that is as far as I have gotten.

scrappy twirl blocks

In 2018 I was determined to use my scrap crazy templates or get rid of them. I saw a picture of a quilt that was different than the usual way of using the templates, that I decided to try. I sewed a print strip and a background strip together and used one of the templates to make 60 degree triangles. It has been waiting in the UFO closet since then. When I opened the box, there were 50 sets of 6  triangles pinned together. They are not very big and I wasn't sure how I would proceed. I decided I would sew them in halves and join them.

I only made a few and now, I need to decide what to do next. It looks like I may need to do 'y' seams ..ugh. This is part of my ufo challenge this year.

finish scrappy twirl

I started this quilt in 2018 and I called it template twirls. I made it using the crazy 6 templates from creative grids as part of an experiment. I was determined to go through my templates, at the time, or get rid of them. I made several quilts or tops at the time, and had so much fun, I kept the templates LOL

This is a great use for all the little bits of strings and crumbs

60 x 70 and the sun was funny for the photo

I quilted all over bubbles and added the binding by machine.

template twirls top

I have a new  top ready for the "to be quilted" closet. This was an experiment using the creative grids crazy six template. I really like the scrappy twirls from the black. The border was an extra border I had made for another quilt and didn't use. It was great to find a home for it on this quilt

The colorful parts are crumbs from my string and crumbs bin. There is so much fun in such tiny pieces.
It is just like doodling with fabric and any color works.

I spy a bear

and a selvage

and candy corns

I just love this kind of scrappy quilt. I don't know when I will get to this. At this point, I have over 20 tops that I need to quilt. And yet, when I decide to take a turn on the longarm, I can't decide which one to quilt. I think I am going to let a random number generator decide next time. LOL

I started this quilt in 2018 and I called it template twirls.

new template

I have challenged myself to use my templates this year, and decide which ones are worth keeping and which ones I won't. Last year, I ended the year using the scrap crazy 6 template. I hadn't even opened the set.
I enjoyed the different variations that I tried - Oriental pinwheel, scrappy twirl, and scrappy twinkle.

Then, in January, I tried the scrap crazy original template. I had taken a class 5 or so years ago, and had made a very cute child's quilt using the template, but, then, it sat unused. I used it to cut another quilt, made the mistake cutting that gave me mirror image pieces. The plan was to make 2 smaller quilts. ummm... not enough. on to plan c. I am working on bordering the quilt with the mistake blocks. I have the inner border attached.

I am thinking that for February and however longer, I am going to experiment with the pineapple template and trash to treasure.

I have one block pieced that I made when I bought the template years ago.

I also have an unopened, very dusty, pineapple template from creative grids. Which will I like better?

If you want to dust off an old template, and join me this year, I can do a linky thingy and we can inspire each other. I haven't ever done a link up, but I am sure I could learn.

crazy template

I have all the blocks cut for the scrappy twirl quilt I am making using scrap crazy 6 template.
Here is where I started. It seemed to take forever to cut them and I was glad when I was finished, except now I keep seeing other floral scraps, and think it would look good in the quilt. I need to make this one before I start another one. As far as I can tell, it will have to be pieced in rows. I have several quilts in the process, I don't know, yet, if I will even attempt to put this together.

I have another bucket of flannel to sort. I like the bright fruit loops piece and hope to find enough to make something fun. Flannel is the most discarded fabric at goodwill. So I have bits and pieces. I hope to find enough that go together to make donation quilts. Last year, I worked on Christmas fabric all year long, this year I am going through the flannel.

template fun

scrap crazy 6 template fun again. I had a scrap bag from guild, and all the pieces looked like this. My original thought was to throw the bag into the string bucket, but all the fabrics were floral. I have been saving floral fabrics for a project.

I decided I could work at finding enough fabric to make something.
I cut 3 inch strips of white with black fabric and 3 inch strips of florals

I sewed them together in pairs

And I used the A template from scrap crazy 6 templates to cut triangles. There is a bit of waste.

And I am planning on this block. I think it will be fun.

progress

All my customer quilts are done, and the longarm is all mine. I want to finish a few of my projects over the holidays. And finish to me is putting together the back top and binding, ready to be quilted, And maybe quilting.
The backing is pieced and the binding ready for orca bay mystery.

I have had this basket of a quilt and fabrics to the square dance mystery taking up much needed space in the quilt room. I need borders. I am not feeling inspired yet.  definitely nope....

definitely nope... Inspiration will come soon enough.

I have been cutting my large florals for a quilt  idea I have for the scrap crazy 6 template.

And I have been restacking my project boxes. After a year of searching through them for various projects, they are all over the place. I am pulling my top 10 ufos for 2019 and putting them in the same location.

Scrappy twirl

I am off teaching a rug hooking class to my guild today. We are making feather trees.  here and here
I had one more idea to try with the scrap crazy 6 template set. I used a 3 inch strip in color, and a 3 inch strip of background. I sewed them together, and used the markings on the template to center it, and cut. It takes almost a whole wof strip to have 6 cuts of the same fabric.

There is waste....

But, it is a cute block.

I don't normally keep 3 inch strips in my scrap user's system, so if I want to make a whole quilt I will need to cut from larger scraps.

template twirls

I had a quilt that I had seen online that I wanted to see if I could use the scrap crazy 6 templates to make. I really like the way this has black pinwheels.

I guess what I am trying to understand is how to do it like the quilt I found online with a square in the center of scraps. Mine has another pinwheel. Which I like, but wonder why it isn't the same. I am sure I will hang my head when I find the easy solution.

template fun

Using the scrap crazy 6 templates has been fun. I haven't finished anything, but I have learned a bit about color choices. I am not of fan of the oriental look.

I have really enjoyed sewing these together. I am sure there is a smart way to cut the scrappy triangle but I am just using squares that I have constructed from scraps and then making sure it is big enough to cut a 6 1/2 inch square.

I can get both these variations using one square.

I am going to sew the quarters together like this for the inside of the quilt and then work around the edge to finish it.

I have one more variation using the scrap crazy 6 template that I want to try before I put these templates away.

crazy 6 scrappy

I have several already made blocks of strings and crumbs to play with in experimenting with a scrappy version quilt using the scrap crazy 6 template set.
I tried to visualize a square block and pick a diagonal to sew the black and white piece.

I am trimming to 6 1/2 inches using the black and white section as the cornerstone.

How I started this quilt is here and here and here. and here and here and here.

I have started the last of the Christmas snowflake blocks

Tuesday template

Last week, I cut the black and white pieces for a new experimental quilt.. I am using the scrap crazy 6 template.

I have started the chain piecing. But, I am only sewing a few every morning before I work on other UFOs.

I have another snowflake block finished which leaves only one left to do. I am trying to finish these as I am planning to teach this quilt to our guild the early part of next year.

My Grandaughters are visiting for fall break and we have had great fun. I had purchased a box of lala loopsie dolls at goodwill. And we are picking our favorites.
