finish scrappy twirl

I started this quilt in 2018 and I called it template twirls. I made it using the crazy 6 templates from creative grids as part of an experiment. I was determined to go through my templates, at the time, or get rid of them. I made several quilts or tops at the time, and had so much fun, I kept the templates LOL

This is a great use for all the little bits of strings and crumbs

60 x 70 and the sun was funny for the photo

I quilted all over bubbles and added the binding by machine.

template quilt finish

I started making a quilt using the scrap crazy templates with an idea in my head. The blocks were not difficult, but, I did make a mistake. The fabric needs to be facing the same direction, either right side up or wrong side up, but, not folded together. Some I cut, the right way, but, then I would forget, and cut the wrong way. The hard part was sorting it out. The quilt came to a screeching halt. Every time I would see it, I would shake my head, and, go on to something else. One day, it clicked, I wanted it to look improv, so it didn't matter that some blocks were leaning one way or another. sigh.....
The top has been done and in the "to be quilted" pile for a little while. It's good to get it finished.

It is about 50 x 65 inches. I cut leftover blocks to make the border.

I started it here and here

This is also a finish for my PHD 2020.

February one monthly goal

For February's one monthly goal, I want to quilt a quiltville mystery quilt called celtic solstice. I have had this quilt pieced since 2014. And, I have had it on my top ten list to finish every year since then. It didn't happen. Last year, I made a commitment to myself to finish all the mystery quilts, and it is time for this one. I thought I had binding ready for it, but, it's not with the quilt. So, either it is lost in a black hole, or I remember wrongly.

I have our version of the circa 1880 quilt block swap to make this month. I need 30 blocks.

I have a border coming for the Christmas snowflake quilt and want to get that on the top for February. I will be teaching it in March for the guild, and it will be good to have it all finished.
And I have at least 4 quilts I am working on for the rainbow scrap challenge. This month the color is yellow.

As part of my template challenge, I have the top all finished using the scrap crazy template. I am calling it tic tac toe.
I used the leftover blocks as the border. I cut them in half and added them to the outside.

I found a backing that I liked and I prepared the binding.

I can stick this quilt in the quilt closet and wait for a time to quilt it.

new template

I have challenged myself to use my templates this year, and decide which ones are worth keeping and which ones I won't. Last year, I ended the year using the scrap crazy 6 template. I hadn't even opened the set.
I enjoyed the different variations that I tried - Oriental pinwheel, scrappy twirl, and scrappy twinkle.

Then, in January, I tried the scrap crazy original template. I had taken a class 5 or so years ago, and had made a very cute child's quilt using the template, but, then, it sat unused. I used it to cut another quilt, made the mistake cutting that gave me mirror image pieces. The plan was to make 2 smaller quilts. ummm... not enough. on to plan c. I am working on bordering the quilt with the mistake blocks. I have the inner border attached.

I am thinking that for February and however longer, I am going to experiment with the pineapple template and trash to treasure.

I have one block pieced that I made when I bought the template years ago.

I also have an unopened, very dusty, pineapple template from creative grids. Which will I like better?

If you want to dust off an old template, and join me this year, I can do a linky thingy and we can inspire each other. I haven't ever done a link up, but I am sure I could learn.

crazy template

I have been using the scrap crazy template to see if I like it. I have so many great tools that I never use, because I just don't think about it. I discovered that I cut them wrong. I cut the pieces with fabric wrong sides together and I had mirror images instead of a consistent block. So, I cut another set with the fabric all facing the same direction. I was able to put this top together. It is a little small for my preference, But, I don't have enough of the white to make it bigger. I have enough of the other squares, wrong and right, that I can make another quilt. Then, I realized that since it is a "crazy" design, it wouldn't have mattered if they were mirror images anyway. sigh....

Today is a rug hooking day. We have been off for the holidays and it will be good to get together again. I am looking at a snowman rug for the winter months. Although, our winter has been mild so far, but that could change in an instant.

one monthly goal

A new year of possibilities and new goals

I have a new swap that is starting with 4 other friends, we are making the bordered square block in the 4 1/2 inch size, mostly from civil war reproduction fabrics. Each month we need to make 30 blocks. That is 6 blocks per person each month. We were inspired by Pam Buda's new quilt...

I want to make my 30 blocks for January as my One monthly goal.
My Ufo challenge with Patchwork times is orca bay mystery quilt. I need to get it quilted for January.
My finish it project is to get the fishy quilt quilted and bound.
My flannel project ( 2019 is the year of flannel for me ) is a rag strip quilt. I want to do a baby size.

I have decided to work with the scrap crazy template for January. I have a start on some of the blocks.

I am not sure yet what I want to do with them.
