mini template round 2

I went to a geneology workshop last night and feel motivated to try a little harder to search through my family history. I know it can be important to my Grandchildren who never knew my family. They were all gone by the time they were born. That is what happens to a late in life daughter of a late in life daughter of a late in life daughter. And Yes, I had a late in life child, even though I swore I wouldn't. It's a blessing and a curse......
Playing with the new mini pineapple ruler is addictive. I can make it with the smallest scraps. And I have a shoe box full of little triangles from the quilt wild and goosey.

The size difference doesn't seem so great while I am working on the small one, but when I put them next to each other, wow.

Here is how I started with the mini template.

mini template

This just arrived in the mail, and I am really excited to try it. It is the mini version of the pineapple template I have been using.

The center square is 1 1/2 inches.

And round one is 2 1/2 inches. I don't really have time to work on these right now, but they are a fun distraction. I haven't even started the mystery quilt, yet.

I had no intention of ever going smaller with the pineapple block, until, I saw this quilt at the Indy quilt show. It said it was made with the mini ruler. I came home and ordered a mini template.

pineapple blocks

It was time to start a few more pineapple blocks. The ones I had been working on had reached the size I wanted. I try to keep a few going so that I will remember how to make them. I don't like that I have to reacquaint  myself if I wait too long to work on them. These blocks started as a gifted bag of scraps more here.

The second row is easy to trim. I can cut both sides before I move the template.

I am ready for the neutral row.

pineapple

I had the pineapple template and project out last week, and I wanted to try another round before I lose interest again.

It would be helpful at this time, to decide the size I am making. haha

pineapple template

I have been anxious to pull out the pineapple project bin, and get back to making these blocks.
I was also worried that I wouldn't remember how or what I was doing.
This is the kind of quilt that makes scraps so much fun.

I am using the creative grids template which makes it easy to remember what I need to do.

I had 4 blocks I was working on at a time and they are now trimmed and ready for the next round.

I thought I would try to find the mini pineapple ruler in the wild, until I saw this quilt at the last quilt show. That is tiny. But, then it motivated me to revisit my project, so I am still going to look for the ruler, and, then, decide.

I started it here and here.

more pineapple blocks

I was in the mood to put another round on the pineapple blocks. It is easier if I have a long strip that I can use for chain piecing. I am using a bag of scraps gifted to me by a fellow guild quilter.

For this round, the corners of the template are used for trimming by placing the center square in the right template square.

 I started it here.

progress

I am not in a finishing mood....at all. I seem to want to drift from project to project. I did another round on some pineapple blocks, more here.

I made a few more florabunda blocks, more here.

I made another section of sweet land of liberty, more here.

I have a few more garden party blocks, more here.

pineapple new round

Yesterday was hijacked by my husband's heart and atrial fibrillation. They decided to shock him into rhythm. It was a long ordeal, and more waiting time than fixing time. It started in the morning, and, I thought we had circumvented the hospital by going to the doctor's office. Our doctor was out for the day, and his partner decided to be a bit more aggressive. So, we ended up spending a few hours in the hospital for a cardiac conversion.
He is much better and home. We have a million more medications and instructions, getting older isn't for sissies.

My little bit of sewing time, was to trim a new round of pineapple blocks using the creative grids template. I have never tried any other method for making a pineapple block, but this seems really easy. I started it here. There are squares in the center that line up the center square and them the angle of the template makes quick work of cutting.

I made a few alphabet letters in orange for the rainbow scrap challenge.

And a few more scrappy HSTs

pineapple round 2

As a way to chain piece my pineapple blocks, I used a  long strip of color for round 2. I could lay the pineapple centers on the strip and just sew. Then I cut them apart and did another side, and so on.

I have had an obsession with making these little 4 1/2 inch string blocks and creating larger blocks. It uses small bits and goes very fast. And you can't make just one. I did not enjoy making the larger
6 1/2 inch blocks for sand castles. I took forever and it was more difficult to find the right size strip, but this was fast and fun.

I had cleaned up the string mess from sand castles, and vowed I was going to stop string piecing altogether - at least for awhile. This time the idea came while I was cleaning the desk, and found little squares of phone book paper. I had a nice stack of 4 1/2 inch squares so I laid them on the treadle. I walked by a couple of times, and, then, thought I would just try and see. I imagine it will take a million squares to create a quilt of sufficient size.

pineapple template

I started the pineapple blocks with a long neutral 1 1/2 inch piece and chain stitched as many 2 1/2 inch squares on it as I could. I did that on each side until I had a framed 2 1/2 inch square. It was my way of chain piecing a block that can't be chain pieced.

I used the creative grids pineapple template to cut the corners. There is a square on the template marked center square, and it places a diagonal cut in just the right place. The center square on the template is just for round one. I had planned on a more traditional look with scraps, until, I found the monkey. It had to be included.

And, magically there were these...

I noticed that round one was really a triangle so I measured, and, a 2 inch triangle will work, if I need to cut more strips in the future. I think I will try a triangle next time just to see if I like doing it that way better.

pineapple block

I was gifted with a bag of scraps from a 93 year old quilter. She is trying to sort through her stash. I was honored to receive her little bag. And I wanted to make use of them right away, before I forgot how I had received them.
As I was ironing them ( and admiring them) I noticed I had recently found my pineapple templates while cleaning a shelf in my sewing room. I decided to make a few blocks using only Hazel's scraps.
I started with this template

and then I made one using this template

They are both  great for simplifying an old block, but it is time consuming. I only made 2 -8 inch blocks.

But, I have all of Hazel's scraps cut and ready to go for another round of pineapple piecing.
There won't be enough for a quilt, but I am not at a loss for scraps that I can add to it.

I have the trash to treasure book and template in my etsy store here.

new template

I have challenged myself to use my templates this year, and decide which ones are worth keeping and which ones I won't. Last year, I ended the year using the scrap crazy 6 template. I hadn't even opened the set.
I enjoyed the different variations that I tried - Oriental pinwheel, scrappy twirl, and scrappy twinkle.

Then, in January, I tried the scrap crazy original template. I had taken a class 5 or so years ago, and had made a very cute child's quilt using the template, but, then, it sat unused. I used it to cut another quilt, made the mistake cutting that gave me mirror image pieces. The plan was to make 2 smaller quilts. ummm... not enough. on to plan c. I am working on bordering the quilt with the mistake blocks. I have the inner border attached.

I am thinking that for February and however longer, I am going to experiment with the pineapple template and trash to treasure.

I have one block pieced that I made when I bought the template years ago.

I also have an unopened, very dusty, pineapple template from creative grids. Which will I like better?

If you want to dust off an old template, and join me this year, I can do a linky thingy and we can inspire each other. I haven't ever done a link up, but I am sure I could learn.
