5 quilts June 2, 2024

   Last report May 1, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. My top priority this year are the quilts in the to be quilted closet.

I finished 4 ufos in May. They were all quilts in the to be quilted closet. I did want to reduce the number of quilts that were in the closet. But it is a tradeoff with finishing ufos that need to be finished.

I wanted to finish 2 quilts In the 'to be quilted closet' before I did any other UFOs. I finished....

1. scrappy log cabin is finished

2.shirt anvil is finished

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1. Lucky stars is finished

2. florabunda is finished

3. cathedral stars - It is an older ufo from 2016, a Bonnie hunter pattern. I have started assembly and all the rows are made. I need to sit and pin them together.

3. scrappy twirl new in March - I have all the blocks pieced and will start the rows. I wish I had left them in halves and may still unpick if I have don't like sewing the y seams. I have laid them out again and stared at them trying to decide what I want to do next. I had an idea to move it along a bit.

4. garlic knots - I opened the box and began making rows. It is challenging with matching cornerstones in the sashing. All the parts are made or cut and I need to work one row at a time webbing the blocks and a row of sashing together before I can join the rows.

Looking forward to June:

quilts to be quilted from the closet -top priority - I have 18 still to go.

1. maple leaves is on the frame

2. love jelly roll -this will be my one monthly goal for June

1. cathedral stars center and borders

2. garlic knots making rows

3. scrappy twirl assembly of the top

4. dark strings needs a border

5. lozenges - 2014 leader/ ender challenge

next on the longarm

1. scrappy mountain majesties quilted

2. strip weave

3. glitter

4. Christmas snowflake

florabunda finish

I love yellow and florals, so I started gathering and planning for Bonnie Hunters florabunda quilt in 2016. It is a free quilt on her site. Yet, It wasn't until 2019 that I started cutting and sewing the blocks. The top was completed in 2021. This year, I chose it for the 5 quilts project5 quilts project and quilted and bound it.

yellow stars

I have more sunshiny yellow blocks made for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I have started crumb stars just this year. I sit for one evening sewing crumbs in the color of the month. However many I can cut from that, is how many I can make for the month.  I am cutting the centers at 4 1/2 inches and using 2 1/2   HSTS - ( half square triangles )

I made 10 yellow tiny houses, but, one has played the vanishing game. Maybe it found an empty lot somewhere warm.

I managed to get the Bonnie Hunter free pattern called Florabunda. quilt to a top just yesterday at Friday sew group.

florabunda borders

I had a sew day Saturday for working on my florabunda quilt. I wasn't sure the last time I worked on it, that I would like it. But, I decided to press forward and make a simplified version of Bonnie Hunter's  borders on her quilt. I calculated that I needed 5 1/2 inch, 2 1/2 inch, 3 inch strips, to strip piece what I wanted to do. I had a leftover collection of florals to use.

5 1/2 floral plus 2 1/2 yellow strips

I sewed the second unit with a 2 1/2 in strip of floral, 2 1/2 inch strip of yellow and a 3 inch strip of floral. I sliced everything into 2 1/2 inch units.

I have what I believe will be all the borders made. I miscalculated the length of the smaller piece ( it should have been 3 1/2) so, I will have to trim them.

I like the way it looks with the borders. It is definitely an improvement. I am glad  I kept going

to do: assemble florabunda

Our Friday small group met at the library, and I took the opportunity to use the floor for a design floor.

I had finished the blocks last year for this Bonnie Hunter free pattern called Florabunda. The color for February  for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy is yellow. And this is one of the UFOs that I am working on for yellow.  I was very disappointed at it looking at it on the design floor. It looked ugly.  So, I spent time thinking how I could not finish the quilt, and, not let all the work go to waste. I waited a day to pull it out at home. Yellow is my favorite color. I had fun finding florals in my stash. I like the design of a Jacob's ladder. I like scrappy, even ugly scrappy. SO what was the problem.

I decided to stick with the program and finish it. I have a few rows together, and, I like it. I guess it can never leave my home since it looks fine here.... for a scrappy quilt.

florabunda again

Warning: this project is not anywhere on my goal list for the year. I was just straightening the project area.
Last week I shared florabunda quilt, and wanted to decide if I should finish the blocks and put it away for awhile, or just put it away. I had pieces cut, and, I was at least 4 blocks short of a quilt. While I was counting and figuring, my head said - all the pieces are cut, just...... sew a few.
Next thing I know, I have 52. Well, that doesn't make a layout for a quilt. If I cut a few more yellow strips and triangles, I could go to 56. Next thing I know, I have 61. Don't watch TV while doing this, folks. I am absolutely stopping at 63. Really, I am.

florabunda

It has been awhile since I have had this project out to work on making progress. Since it had been so long, I was planning to send it to the project closet and ufo official status. But, I wanted to see where I stand and maybe make notes.

I have 44 blocks finished and need at least 48, but, I have more cut. I'm afraid if I put it away, I won't remember how I want to make the quilt. Florabunda is a free pattern on quiltville.

this and that

It was a long weekend, I have been slowly cleaning for company and Thanksgiving. Not my favorite thing to do. So, I do it very slowly with as many distractions as I can find. I did dig the Christmas tree out of storage. So far it looks a little pathetic.
I made another sand castle block. This quilt is in the book string frenzy. I started it here and here and here.

...and 2 more florabunda blocks. This is a free quilt at quiltville- more here.

...and another row of basket blocks. more here

this and that

I had one of those sewing mornings, that I just couldn't figure out what to sew. I was in a funky mood and everything sounded blah. So I pulled out some oldies that are basically leader ender, until, I decide what else to do with them.
I used a bloc loc template set to make a few of the these blocks.

I sewed a few tumblers together.

I made 3 shoofly blocks.

And for added measure, I sewed two florabunda blocks.

And, then, I felt so much better.

I made a few more florabunda blocks, more here.

I made another section of sweet land of liberty, more here.

I have a few more garden party blocks, more here.

template fun

I grabbed a few spikey pieces to sew together using the bloc loc templates. They are small and will finish at 2 1/2 inches square. They are very cute and easy to do. I cut mine from small leftover scrap pieces. I need to cut the other pieces I need so that I can see a star together.

Usually, I avoid trimming down, if I can, but, with this template it is easy and I end up with a perfect block.

I used the florabunda blocks as leader/ender  as I was sewing. I made three from this floral fabric.

4 patches

I need 512 - 4 patches for sand castle quilt - a quiltville pattern. I am using them as leader/ enders for other stitching. I have only made 200 and I need more. My bucket was looking empty, and, I needed more variety.

I thought this was a good reason to dig through the 1 1/2 inch strip bin, and strip piece the odd stuff.
Now, I need time at the accuquilt to get sets of twosies cut, and then, I can mindlessly sew more tiny 4 patches. I am guessing I have not made enough even yet, but, it will get me started.

I have 2 more florabunda blocks to add to my collection.

One of my rug hooking friends brought this quilt in to show everybody. This was her husband's Grandmother's quilt project. There were pieces from a 1929 newspaper found in the back, used as foundation papers. It is really a beauty in person. The  diamonds were hand stitched but the blocks were machine pieced together.

I love all the different fabrics and shapes sewn together to make a piece.
Beth plans on hand quilting it. Just imagine the relationship she will form while she works on it, and thinks about the family member who made it.

progress

From pieces and parts, I am slowly making 72 florabunda blocks. I am mostly cutting the old florals if I come upon them in sorting other scraps. I need a 3 1/2 in strip to make the HSTs and a 2 inch strip for the 4 patches. If I find a piece that has that much fabric, I cut it, and stack it in the box. Finding the yellows isn't as easy. And I don't have that many yellows in my stash, it is time to shop for more. Bummer:).

I had enough for 3 of this fabric combo.

And I might get 3 from this one too.

My 3 1/2 inch strip drawer was full and wouldn't close. That is the sign I needed to sort into colors and launch them into the big tub. I keep an easily accessible drawer in my sewing room near the cutting table. I have 1 1/2 inch, 2 inch and 2 1/2 inch drawers as well. I just throw them in as I cut them. I keep a bigger set of buckets further away from the work area that I sort into by color.
When those are full it is time to cut a new quilt.
