red crumb stars

I made 10 crumb stars for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. May's color is red. After a few years of following along with the rainbow scrap challenge, I was surprised that there were very few small red scraps. I still have more than I need, but I have, apparently, weeded the smallest pieces out of the scraps. Even, the 2 1/2 inch strip bin was mostly long strips. And I have used all my 2 1/2 inch squares. It was a bit of a struggle to find the pieces for the crumb centers.

After 3 tries, I have successfully made a sourdough starter.... in a red bowl. I tried a few years ago with a pioneer starter. I really didn't like the smell of it, and, wasn't confident enough to follow through with it. All I have made with my new starter was banana bread.

more crumb stars

Over the weekend, I realized that I had made more crumb stars in other colors than in blue. I know blue is the scrap color I have the most, so why was I short on blue? Well, some had been scooped up in a cleaning job, and, had gone missing. And, I found a few more blue crumbs.....Now, I have 9 more blue crumb stars. The first blue ones are here

We have had a rainy weekend. Sometimes, in the Spring, a good rain makes all the flowers look brighter. Such a lovely time of year.

crumby green

I make the tiny houses from 2 inch scraps for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. This is my second year making them. It will take several years, apparently, to make enough to use in a quilt. They are, after all, tiny.

I make the crumb stars from strings and crumbs, and the 2 1/2 inch strip bin for the   HSTS - ( half square triangles ). This is a new rainbow project this year. And a great excuse to play in the strings, which has ignited a flurry of string quilt starts.

yellow stars

I have more sunshiny yellow blocks made for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I have started crumb stars just this year. I sit for one evening sewing crumbs in the color of the month. However many I can cut from that, is how many I can make for the month.  I am cutting the centers at 4 1/2 inches and using 2 1/2   HSTS - ( half square triangles )

I made 10 yellow tiny houses, but, one has played the vanishing game. Maybe it found an empty lot somewhere warm.

I managed to get the Bonnie Hunter free pattern called Florabunda. quilt to a top just yesterday at Friday sew group.

crumb star

I haven't been able to add to the pink drawer of 2 1/2 inch strips in a long time. It is full. I noticed some red had worked it's way into the drawer when I wasn't looking, too. I have a new rainbow scrap challenge block I want to make to use from this drawer and help clean and organize it.

The first step was to divide the strips into width of fabric strips and shorter. I was curious about how many would fall into each category. I grabbed a part of the pile for the HSTS - ( half square triangles ) I was planning to cut.

I needed 2 1/2 inch HSTS for the crumb star blocks, I was planning to make. I had used crumbs and strings to make 8 - 4 1/2 inch squares. Eight was the number, because, that was all I could easily dig and find. Each star needs 8 star points aka hsts.

trimmed and ironed

1st block and, yes, I like it enough to continue
