is cheddar orange?

offering a bit of orange and blue and pink for the rainbow scrap challenge. The month is ending and with it the orange for the month of September. This quilt is almost a finish, it just needs borders, etc. This is Double Delight a free Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt at Quiltville.

We had an adventure to a fall market.
My hubby grabbed this fork and mentioned it might be big enough for our youngest son. who inhales food.

What I liked about these pumpkins was that the tops were just gathered together and sisal was wrapped around them to hold the ends. No sewing needed. think of the scraps you could use.

en provence quilt

My one monthly Goal is finished, and just in the nick of time. Here is Bonnie Hunter's En Provence, a mystery quilt from last year. I think this is the quickest I have finished a mystery quilt. Recently, I finished Old Tobacco road mystery from 2008. So I am grateful this is done. I used Bonnie's colors, and size. I didn't buy any fabric for this quilt, it all came from my stash.

Since the September project is done, I can spend a few days cleaning tables, and scraps, and work a little on my just for fun projects. I've made more glitter blocks, and I have cut more too. So when I get a chance I can just sew them together.

double delight

I found the box of my Double Delight project in the ufo closet.  Again, all the pieces are there, all I need to do is start laying out the rows. I am challenged when it comes to on point settings. I really need to arrange and rearrange before I start to sew. And still I might find a setting triangle turned wrong. This was Bonnie Hunter's 3rd mystery quilt, so it needs to get finished. I love the colors and the scrappy fabrics.

Again, I am in no hurry and plan to use this as my away project at the library. There will be room to lay it out there.

I finished this beautiful quilt for a customer. The colors are wonderful.

She had extra blocks on the back which my longarm wasn't happy about but did just fine.

featherweight tote

My Friend had designed a featherweight mate pattern for a carrier and table protector for the featherweight. She has a pattern on craftsy. I made one a bit ago, and it is getting worn out ( or I was just tired of it), so it was time to make another one. I wanted it to be a little brighter but still look good with the black of my featherweight.

It is so easy to put a sewing machine in and out of a case with it in the carrier. It has handles and when it is opened on the table, it protects the table and has a place for your favorite tools.

I don't use my official featherweight box, because I don't want to tear it up with traveling. I use a regular sewing tote, and I want my machine to be protected. There is also an extra flap in the design that fits between the table and the little screw on the side when the table is folded up for traveling.

I felt like cutting last night and cut several sets of glitter

and 3 inch churndashes

Sometimes I just want to mess in the scraps, and cutting these little pieces was therapeutic.

grandpas star too

all the Grandpas star blocks are finished, and 1, 280 half square triangles are gone. I didn't have to make a single half square triangle for these blocks. They were the "bonus" triangles from flip and sew corners of other quilt projects. I had already sewed them at that time. More about this here and here

Those silly ends that have to be trimmed, and the wastebasket had walked off on vacation.

I have more glitter blocks finished.

I didn't get my stash report blogged yesterday.
There was really no change, so I wasn't as motivated to share. I have been using fabric but nothing to report yet.

domino ufo projects

Have you noticed there is not enough time to do all you want to do? I have a problem with liking everything I see. I finished all 8 cutting garden blocks in orange for the rainbow scrap challenge. I already have a long list of rainbow projects for next year, thanks to all the inspiration I found visiting other rainbow scrappers.

I have a batch of nearly finished projects. Once the first domino falls they will all tumble down. That is certainly a fun part of quilting or anything.

Grandpas star

I have yet another long time ufo in a project box. This is a wonderful quilt to use all the bonus triangles that I have been accumulating. And the blocks are really fun to make. And when I do the final pressing, it is just so fun to see what it became. I have some very old 1/2 square triangles that finish at 2 inches.

When I first started making Bonnie Hunter quilts, the blocks were more kitchen sink type blocks. Bonnie has refined her scrappy approach to a more color controlled scrappy style. So my bonus triangles, are now baggies that are one color. I don't know if any one quilt will make enough triangles to make it's own quilt. So that is a worry for later.

The pattern was from an Addicted to scraps column in the March/April 2012 quiltmaker magazine

the mock up of the quilt shows 80 blocks 8 x 10. I will have to see if I like it that way. I really like the look of just the block.

I generally sew the bonus triangles at the time I am sewing the original block. Then I throw them in a drawer. Every now and then, I open the drawer, panic at the chaos, and determine to do "something" with the mess. I have a couple of marathon pressing and trimming sessions, and then, count and baggie them. I usually love the process, and so I am more likely to use them and make them again. I am really happy that Bonnie has "invented" the bonus triangle buddy. I really use it, and it has helped with the trimming process.

When I opened the box, I have 28 blocks, only 52 more to go.

churndash

I had these started a few years ago and thought it would make a nice leader/ender project while I am finishing a few tedious parts of projects. I had nearly 30 blocks already made in the 6 inch size, and 20 un the 3 inch size. The little ones are so much fun and really bring out the smiles, but it will take a gazillion to make a quilt.

I have 30 more sets cut and pinned together.
And these are deep stash scraps.

The sets I cut with just 3 inch squares. The pattern calls for 2 7/8 so I just plan on trimming. All the squares are based on 2 1/2 in squares.

I don't rreally have a plan for them, so I don't know how many I need. I thought about something like this...

This is when I really wish I knew how to use EQ.

civil war Christmas

Last week I took the black inner border off the spirit of Christmas quilt. I had put it on during an open sew, and I was just not happy with how it looked. I spent a bit of an afternoon with the seam ripper.
At home, I could use a good iron and spray starch and squared it up a bit. Time to begin again.

This time the little black border was great. And I moved on to the next border. Each time I was taking a little more time and effort to get it square and happy. There 3 more borders to go but I am pleased with the progress. I don't have to be in a hurry, even if my friend has already finished hers...sigh...

rows of pinning

It is time to start the rows of Carolina Crossroads quilt. This part is a little tedious since I do better if I pin intersections and they are only 1 inch apart. That is a lot of pinning. I think what I will do is pin a row while I am watching tv in the evening and then sew it in the morning and then repeat.

It is always easy to put the first 2 rows together because they are short.

I have put this together as a leader/ ender while I worked on glitter blocks. I can make at least 4 seams while doing the background of one glitter blocks

Stash report September 17, 2017

I went to a REAL quilt store with Linda friend. and a bakery. and a pizza place.
These fat quarters were in the dollar bin. I thought they were fun fun fabrics.

I loved the happy words on this neutral.

I thought this would make a cute back section for one of my Grandchildren.

I am hunting a country tan color of thread for my longarm for all the civil war type quilts that come in to be quilted. I really like this brand of thread, but I usually have to order it online. I couldn't decide which color, so I bought both.

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week 0 yards
Fabric Used year to Date: 318 1/2 yards

Fabric Added this Week: 4 1/2 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 279 yards

Net Fabric for 2017:  39 1/2 yards used more than added.

I don't really have any new stitching projects, so I will add a few hexies to my hexie quilt

pineapple blossom orange

Last month's color for rainbow scrap challenge was not a color I needed for my two ongoing rainbow quilts, so it was good to get them out again and work on them.
Ready for the final round on the pineapple blossoms - quiltville

I am making rows of 5 so the orange row is ready to assemble

There was a little purple going on in the sewing room this week too.

2 sides of the quiltville leader/ender challenge are attached. The bucket of hourglass units is nearly empty. So there is an end to this quilt. The plan didn't include borders, which will seem odd, but appreciated.

For string Saturday, I am making bigger shirt blocks for sashing I hope to need next month for my one monthly goal. I have to really dig in the string bucket to find shirt pieces. hmm where have they gone?

webbing the top

I know I have shown this as a finish, but Old Tobacco Road is taking a turn on the bed, and it just makes me smile. I love the scrappy pinwheels. I think when a quilt takes so long to finish, it is even more surprising when it is done. The scraps are a memory of a while ago. And when a quilt goes into time out, it is forgotten. And so is all the frustration that was part of the learning and the repetitiveness of the piecing. I have noticed that while I do the finishing, I actually think, I could make this quilt again in different scraps and colors. I guarantee, I was not thinking that when it went in the ufo box. Most of the time a quilt goes into time out, I am thinking about matches and lighting it on fire. Time has a way of softening the edges.

It is time to web the top of En provence. Webbing the top is a technique that Bonnie Hunter has shared on her website Quiltville, and it makes keeping the pieces in the right order easier. The seams are nesting nicely.

I see more stars...
