cheddar jubillee finish

cheddar jubilee is finished and is my one monthly goal for September.

This is an older ufo from 2017. I made many of the sampler blocks in that year. After I assembled the top, I lost it until I found it misplaced in 2024. I was finally able to add it to the 5 quilt project, and work on it until it is finished. This combines my favorite color - yellow, my favorite kind of scrappy, my favorite recycled shirts, and my favorite string piecing. And I was a big fan of Bonnie Hunter. Thinking I had lost this forever has made this a very satisfying finish.

Last month I added cheddar jubilee to my 5 quilt project. It has a history of hiding. This month it is my one monthly goal to finish it. On my list, it was listed as ready for quilting. But, it needed borders. I added the inner border, but, I need to piece the outer border before I can add it.

This poor quilt was declared lost and I had given up hope. It was on my list as ready to be quilted. I looked everywhere. It had been on the 5 quilt project list, and when it's time came... lost. I mourned and moved on. Recently, I was looking for another ufo to piece and I found this quilt  in a box unfinished. Hooray but, I was looking everywhere else than a project box. I had started it in 2017. It started on quiltville as a QAL until it was shut down by the farmer's wife people. The  center is finished. What it needs are an inner border and the string blocks outer border.

The first 2 borders went on the quilt perfectly. The second 2 borders fought me, but, I won. The corners were most of the challenge.

 I was able to finish box kite top in the nick of time for my one monthly goal for April. It was a windy day for photos. It is one on my favorites.  I started this as part of my 5 quilts projects, to finish older UFOS. I made the blocks in 2017. It is a Bonnie Hunter pattern from her book addicted to scraps.

I need to piece a back, prepare binding, and add it to the 'to be quilted closet'

My PHD report. I have met the requirements for the year already. I am anxious to see how many i will end the year

Box kite center is together and I have added the inner border. I am piecing the border but the corners are a challenge to me. I need to double down on this if I am going to finish the top by the end of the month for April's one monthly goal. I have skipped most of my social quilting and that is where I get more done.

I am slowly piecing the rows for my box kite quilt. I have to be careful to turn each block the right way and start each row the right way, haha. I love the scrappy fun. This is my one monthly goal for April to have a top. The border instructions are a little bit confusing. They are not written like Bonnie's methods.

Just a couple of seams and I will have the center done.

It's a start to a top. All the blocks are in sets of 4, and I have the first two rows of box kite together. It has a wonderful secondary pattern. I am hoping to have a top finished for my one monthly goal in April. It is full of lovely scraps. I made the blocks in 2017 from a Bonnie Hunter pattern in her book addicted to scraps. Last year, as part of the rainbow scrap challenge, I started cutting and sewing the borders. This year as part of my 5 quilts project, I plan on finishing it.

I had a wonderful 2 day retreat with my quilt guild. We met at a new venue that was roomy and comfortable. I took 5 projects with me as I could tell I was having focus issues. I worked a little on all of them and then, rinse and repeat. As you can tell I am a spreader. 

Someone brought this yummy treat.

I opened the box on this older ufo from 2017. I have 120 blocks, enough to start assembly of the top. This is a Bonnie Hunter quilt from her book addicted to scraps.   

I began making twosies.

I have hit too many "wait and sees" and it has affected my mojo. I just haven't been able to decide yet on a few projects. I seem to be in a thinking mood and not a doing mood. I have been pondering next year's quilting goals and just not sure what I want to see accomplished.

I have almost finished my owl rug hooking, but I want it bigger. So the fight in my head begins. Finish it the way the pattern requires or invent something else. More work, more indecision. sigh...

As I was webbing En provence, I realized I was one block short. I think I know what happened. I quickly glanced at the note I had made which said 15 inch block make 16. And I made 15. sigh...
There are 25 blocks in each block. And I can't find the leftover fabric. So do I make the quilt 3 x 5  or make another block from scratch. wait and see ...sigh...

I want to pare down Christmas, and I want a smaller 2 old folk size tree. So I am hoping to choose and get rid of the other old and orphaned trees I have gathered over the years.The one I like the best is just too short. And the lights are dead. Do I move on to making this one work ( adding lights), maybe putting it on a stool, and use what I already own too many or just get what I want . wait and see...sigh...

I am trying to make do a quilt frame for a rug hooking floor frame. Every step forward there is a step backward. Do I just get a new properly designated rug hooking frame or keep ruminating for a solution to using what i already have to use. sigh....

calling it done for October

I feel like I have been working on these blocks forever, but it's only been a month. I started with 2 blocks finished and now I have 56. I will set them 7 x 8. I have all of the 125 string pieced sashings pieced, trimmed, and de papered. I have 50 of 72 cornerstones paper pieced. I really made a great start on this quilt. I'd like to think I will keep going, but if not I have it on the list for 2018. So I have met my goal for One monthly Goal OCtober.

One monthly goal

I have wanted to make this quilt since Bonnie Hunter shared it on her Quiltville blog. I spent time looking for my perfect version of cheddar, and even bought a whole bolt when I found it. I think the reason it has not happened yet, is the idea that it is a sampler and each block has to be done individually. I am a chain piecing lover, so when I have time for a new project, I reach for a project that requires 400 of something and power sew them.
But I haven't lost my desire to make this quilt. I think it is her version of farmers wife.

Bonnie called the quilt her jubilee quilt, and it was a sew along with her friend Randy from the barrister's block.

I have 2 whole blocks done and most of the string sashings. So this is basically a start from scratch project. I added it to the monthly goal list for the year, because I don't want to let this go.  I have had big success this year finishing ( thanks to one monthly goal at elm street quilts), so I am hopeful I will buckle down and get going with this. But it is the 4th, and so far all I have done is stare at it.

My one monthly goal is to work on the blocks (56) and see how many I can get done, and then add the finishing of the quilt to my goals for 2018.

One monthly goal

en provence quilt

My one monthly Goal is finished, and just in the nick of time. Here is Bonnie Hunter's En Provence, a mystery quilt from last year. I think this is the quickest I have finished a mystery quilt. Recently, I finished Old Tobacco road mystery from 2008. So I am grateful this is done. I used Bonnie's colors, and size. I didn't buy any fabric for this quilt, it all came from my stash.

Since the September project is done, I can spend a few days cleaning tables, and scraps, and work a little on my just for fun projects. I've made more glitter blocks, and I have cut more too. So when I get a chance I can just sew them together.

En Provence monthly goal

My one monthly goal and Ufo for September is to work on my Bonnie Hunter En Provence quilt from her mystery last year.

I have all my pieces ready to sew together. And I have been very patient waiting for the month that this would be my goal. I actually have 2 versions of this quilt to this point. This one is in the colorway Bonnie suggested, and I have one in civil war fabrics. But I want to get this one to the flimsy stage this month. I have so enjoyed all the versions I have seen posted.
Every year, I hope that my sewing has improved enough to make the assembling easier, with less smacking my head when the blocks are a little too big or too small, and the top is a little wonky. I do so enjoy the process, though.

And I have more glitter blocks finished.

For the rainbow scrap challenge, I have added the rest of the churndash blocks to the snow days quilt.

This is a "the world is a small place" post. I had been busy adding strings to phone book paper for a string quilt in my living room. True, it makes a mess, but I have gotten many blocks done by switching my thinking to String/crumb piecing on Saturdays and in my living room. I wasn't overly worried about the mess and what company would think, since we rarely have any living room company any more. And with age comes a certain lack of concern of what others think.
I use phone book paper for my foundation. It is so much easier to piece any kind of string, easier to rip off, and easier on the pocket book. Our phone book pages are getting smaller, so I am on the look out for bigger books for bigger pages. While visiting my daughter in Utah, I brought one of her phone books home with me. the pages were bigger and the book was thicker. It takes a long time to use up a phone book, but I am working on it.

Well, you guessed it. we had company. The missionaries from church arrived one evening. I knew right away, I loved one of the missionaries, as he was interested in everything and curious much like my own children. He wanted to know how the treadle worked, and what I was doing, and how I was doing it. He was from Utah, and the other Elder was from Idaho.

As he was closely examining the diamond blocks, he discovered that one of the blocks had the listing of his parents phone number on the back of the block. How incredible is that?! I had 80 blocks and he found near the top the one block with his parents name and number... in Indiana... at my house... in my messy living room...

How could we doubt that God knows each of us and is mindful of each of us and that we are all connected as part of His family. all of us...every single one of us...any color...any place....
I am so grateful.
