pink scraps

I have pieces ready for pink this month as the rainbow scrap challenge. I will have to hope for some time next week to make the blocks. I am going to love the pink...

I had promised my little Friday sewing group I would help them learn to piece the Jen Kingwell glitter block. They did very well. I am a chain piecer, so I had worked out a work flow that worked for me.  After, they can do it anyway they choose. Although, one quilter, who wasn't a chain piecer, was worried I wasn't following the directions. She asked "wouldn't it be easier if we did it the way the directions said?" sigh...
sure - I was just trying to confuse you....

Every time, I think for a moment that I would love teaching other quilters, I realize maybe not LOL

I may not be as accurate as some, but I prefer to make more quilts than work on perfection. But I am definitely a technique person. I can make more quilts, because I have figured smooth work flow habits. I am surprised that any quilter, and there were two, wouldn't chain sew. I am surprised at the crummy tools they are using, or the silly things that get in their way. I am surprised how many need help with their machines, or are missing parts , like feet, or cords. Or maybe they don't realize that if they put a band aid in their sewing bag, they will guarantee that they won't need it. Hey, do you think I could put my oven in the bag?
Although, by saying anything, I have guaranteed to forget or have problems sigh...
Here is Linda's first glitter  block = pretty awesome.

Here is Connie's work in progress for her hubby.

is cheddar orange?

offering a bit of orange and blue and pink for the rainbow scrap challenge. The month is ending and with it the orange for the month of September. This quilt is almost a finish, it just needs borders, etc. This is Double Delight a free Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt at Quiltville.

We had an adventure to a fall market.
My hubby grabbed this fork and mentioned it might be big enough for our youngest son. who inhales food.

What I liked about these pumpkins was that the tops were just gathered together and sisal was wrapped around them to hold the ends. No sewing needed. think of the scraps you could use.

domino ufo projects

Have you noticed there is not enough time to do all you want to do? I have a problem with liking everything I see. I finished all 8 cutting garden blocks in orange for the rainbow scrap challenge. I already have a long list of rainbow projects for next year, thanks to all the inspiration I found visiting other rainbow scrappers.

I have a batch of nearly finished projects. Once the first domino falls they will all tumble down. That is certainly a fun part of quilting or anything.

pineapple blossom orange

Last month's color for rainbow scrap challenge was not a color I needed for my two ongoing rainbow quilts, so it was good to get them out again and work on them.
Ready for the final round on the pineapple blossoms - quiltville

I am making rows of 5 so the orange row is ready to assemble

There was a little purple going on in the sewing room this week too.

2 sides of the quiltville leader/ender challenge are attached. The bucket of hourglass units is nearly empty. So there is an end to this quilt. The plan didn't include borders, which will seem odd, but appreciated.

For string Saturday, I am making bigger shirt blocks for sashing I hope to need next month for my one monthly goal. I have to really dig in the string bucket to find shirt pieces. hmm where have they gone?

Orange you glad it is orange

September's rainbow scrap challenge color is orange. Hooray. I can use the color as an excuse to finish some long over due projects.
I finished orange noses on my towel for a Christmas present.

I need an orange back on a hooked pillow with an orange piped edge.

I can clean out my scrap drawer.

And orange will play an important part in a donation quilt

For string Saturday, I am still trimming string blocks for dawn's early light, a Bonnie Hunter Quiltville pattern.

snow days in August

I need 4 -6 inch blocks for my snow days quilt. I am trying to keep them very low contrast with blues and browns and lots of creamy colors.
The 6 inch size uses flying geese that finish at 1 x 2. So cute....

1 1/2 inch squares for the sew and flip corners.

Now, I will need the same block in 9 inches.

I am the official gopher for the house painting project, My job is to sit and wait for the master painter to need something and get it for him. It saves him wear and tear of getting up and down on the ladder. Considering he fell off yesterday, I need to step up my game. He wasn't hurt, but scared us to death. While I am sitting, I have been trimming my string blocks for Dawns early light quilt. Sure, I could be weeding the flower beds, but then he would have to come save me when I can't get back up. And, besides, God is going to weed them come November. But who else is going to trim these blocks? It is really such lovely weather...  perfect for a little cream color for the rainbow scrap challenge for August.

small world

For the rainbow scrap challenge, I have added the rest of the churndash blocks to the snow days quilt.

This is a "the world is a small place" post. I had been busy adding strings to phone book paper for a string quilt in my living room. True, it makes a mess, but I have gotten many blocks done by switching my thinking to String/crumb piecing on Saturdays and in my living room. I wasn't overly worried about the mess and what company would think, since we rarely have any living room company any more. And with age comes a certain lack of concern of what others think.
I use phone book paper for my foundation. It is so much easier to piece any kind of string, easier to rip off, and easier on the pocket book. Our phone book pages are getting smaller, so I am on the look out for bigger books for bigger pages. While visiting my daughter in Utah, I brought one of her phone books home with me. the pages were bigger and the book was thicker. It takes a long time to use up a phone book, but I am working on it.

Well, you guessed it. we had company. The missionaries from church arrived one evening. I knew right away, I loved one of the missionaries, as he was interested in everything and curious much like my own children. He wanted to know how the treadle worked, and what I was doing, and how I was doing it. He was from Utah, and the other Elder was from Idaho.

As he was closely examining the diamond blocks, he discovered that one of the blocks had the listing of his parents phone number on the back of the block. How incredible is that?! I had 80 blocks and he found near the top the one block with his parents name and number... in Indiana... at my house... in my messy living room...

How could we doubt that God knows each of us and is mindful of each of us and that we are all connected as part of His family. all of us...every single one of us...any color...any place....
I am so grateful.

show and tell

Our guild speaker was Lisa Dobson from Martinsville Indiana. She is an art quilter. My favorite was this quilt called the Girl of the limberlost. This was one of my favorite books as a child written by an Indiana author Gene Stratton Porter.

She dyes her own fabric.

here are some quilts from the shop hop

I haven't finished my rainbow scrap challenge quilt - floating stars, but it is trimmed and ready for a border decision.
I have been adding borders to this quilt. Do Bonnie fans know which one it is?

diamonds

My goal for the rainbow scrap challenge this month was to get this quilt to the flimsy stage. I spent my time at small group getting it this far. I need to trim it up and decide on borders. The pattern is a crafty ol' broad pattern called Oh my stars. I think I have been calling it floating stars
I used a very soft blue for the quilt. I took a class with them through our quilt guild.

This is my friend's Linda O's farmer's wife and it is spectacular. She just got it back from her longarmer.

On Saturdays, I am trying to include string piecing into my day with my treadle sewing machine.
I have been working on 45 degree diamond string blocks. I blogged about cutting the papers here and covering the papers here

I've made progress.
I have enough done that I can start to think of creating a quilt with them. But it will have to wait it's turn.

If you are working on a string project, send me a link, I would love to see.
