show off finish

I started this quilt as a means to use my large stash of up cycled shirt fabrics. Show off is a free pattern from quilted twins

I had the rows together in 2020 and it has waited for quilting. As part of my 5 quilt project, it has finally had it's turn on the long arm. It is bigger than I expected - king size - I love it. It is so soft and comfy.

102 x 102 = 28 yards

I used a plaid for the backing, free form bubbles for quilting, and navy binding.

wonky courthouse steps finish

My Friday finish is an older UFO from the strings bin. Wonky courthouse steps was inspired by a Bonnie Hunter pattern. This is the second one I have made. Once, I pull out the strip bin, it is hard to stop. I made a third one as well. All of them I have sewn on my singer treadle.

61 x 67

I used a sheet for the back and quilted free form swirls. I used scrappy pieces for the binding.

I finished the first one in 2021 here. No two look alike when using the string bin.

one monthly goal December

I can't believe it is December already and time to choose a new one monthly goal at elm street quilts.  I dug out my wonky courthouse steps to assess what I needed to do. I have decided not to add borders, so, I need a back, binding, and quilting done for this fun quilt. I think I made 3 of these quilts and this one is larger at 85x 90. I made all 3 of these quilts on my singer treadle.

It is also time to look at any progress I have had with my ufos. I joined the PHD 2021 at quilting gail. I have kept a record of the ufos I have finished for the year so far. I am ahead by three.

crossed strings

I mentioned that my crumby stars had me playing in the strings again. I saw this great idea on Cathy's blog and I had to try it. I started making the long string pieces for the center, but, I couldn't wait to try with the shorter side pieces. Now, I was using mostly crumb pieces, and, I had to piece some strips from shorter pieces to be long enough. I tried eliminating any piece I picked from the basket, either by using in this project, or, sewing them together in another way.

crossed strings

I am a big fan of crumby piecing, and using the most unwanted pieces. I really like the scrappiness of these kinds of quilts, and how completely different each one is. Cathy's quilt seems to have a lot of pink in hers, but, mine, does not. The mystery is fun.

will be the side pieces

Truth be told, I didn't need to start another quilt. Yet, here I am having fun in the strings. I will say there is no hurry to finish, but, we will see just how long I can wait.

norwegian snowflakes quilt

I started cutting and piecing Norwegian snowflake in July  on my treadle. It is a complicated idea to set up, but, easy to piece. It uses a lot of blue 2 inch scraps. And there are a lot of pieces. The pattern is a grid like block. I had three sets of 4 to make a big block, and I was anxious to see how it will look.

It is a quilted twins free pattern, called norwegian snowflakes, I found here. There are 4 blocks in each quadrant, and, 4 quadrants in a block, and, 9 blocks in the quilt. I really like it. I am excited I used a combination of white based and cream based neutrals. I think it adds something to the quilt. I did realize, I should have been trimming earlier in the process. I waited until it was a quarter of a block, and, I felt that I had to compromise the squares too much. I am grateful that it doesn't have to match up with another block, it just uses sashings. Hopefully that will hide my inaccuracies.

This is going to be fun. But, I am sneaking this in, even when, I have other quilts that I need to finish, and a large batch of customer quilts to get ready in time for the holidays. In the beginning of the pandemic, there were no customer quilts, but, they are making up for it now. I did get more of my quilts done.

shirt strings

I used to set aside the weekend for sewing string and crumbs at my treadle. But, after finishing 2 wonky courthouse tops, my living room was a disaster of a mess. I was trying to give up string quilting, but, alas, I miss it. And, I will begin again with the same promises I make to myself, that I will always clean up as I go. haha -I had cut papers for Bonnie Hunter's geese on a string in early Spring. I am making more shirt strings and crumbs as I cut for other projects, and they looked so inviting. I rummaged and found my big bag of shirt pieces, too small or too ugly, for a quilt.

There is something comfy and cozy about shirt fabric.

And, another string project has started.

This was a good start on a new project.

to do: something new

I uncovered a small box with 6 inch squares. I believe, I bought it at a quilt show garage sale. I often wonder what the original quilter was planning and thinking while cutting her fabric into squares.
By donating her scraps, she has brought pleasure to my little world.
I didn't want to cut them down to 5 inch squares, but, I did look for inspiration in the charm pack patterns. I would just make the squares bigger, and, then, the quilt would be bigger.

I thought the squares looked coordinated enough, to just use them scrappy.  The squares are big almost 18 inches. I am using this project at the treadle in the evenings while hubby and I are watching tv. These projects are not "real" projects, and, I am in no hurry. My favorite fabric is the black with fruit, so, I am making sure to have one of them in every square. They are too big to press on my little treadle space, so I will press them when I am done.

more pink dresdens

I thought the best next step for the dresden quilt would be to cut this bag of dresdens I bought at a quilt show. If I was going to use them at all, I would want to start adding the fabrics at the first to make the variety look more consistent. There were both blue and pink in the bag, but I was only interested in the pink.

The  first template I used for this quilt was cardboard in the 80s. When I dug the project out again there was a great new template that I used. And this new template was the right size for the bagged dresdens. There are pencil lines on the back of these pieces, so, the original quilter had used a cardboard template as well.

I needed to tweak the angle a little.

I enjoyed cutting them so much, I even cut the blue ones.

I like the peaked dresdens best, especially with it being easier to sew by machine than a curve. I sewed all the tops on the treadle.

And, the pile grew.

I am using this quilt as a leader/ ender for the month of June and the rainbow scrap challenge.

shirt rows

I started putting all the pieces and parts together for Show off quilt, and, it went very quickly. I have all the rows together. This pattern calls for 9 1/2 inch squares, and is designed by the the quilted twins. They have a large selection of free patterns. I have a large stash of recycled shirt fabric, and I keep it separate, so, it grows. It is time to use it.

When I started, I was in no hurry, making the smaller pieces first. But, the blocks are big and it goes together quickly. It isn't even on a list somewhere, yet.

shirt sashing

I need to make quilts using my large stash of recycled shirt fabrics. I am doing the old country mystery quilt through the quilted twins. They have a large selection of free patterns. I picked one, and have been cutting and sewing in preparation of making it. It takes a bit more time to work with shirts, even if the shirt has been cut for use.
There are fiddley parts of the shirt that are not even or long, but, still, have useable cotton fabric. I tend to try and use those pieces first. This pattern calls for 9 1/2 inch squares. I used mostly sleeves from a million shirts to cut the squares, and, then, cut the remainder into strips and triangles. Whatever I could get out of the rest of the sleeve, was how I decided to cut it. I still have a healthy size pile to cut into scrap user sizes.
I had very few 1 1/2 inch shirt strips that I could cut more than one for the sashing strips.

The pattern calls for a pile of 9 patches as well.

I am using this quilt as an evening project on my treadle while hubby and I are watching TV, and, we are too tired to do anything else. It's amazing how tiring self isolating, and, not going anywhere or doing anything special can make you. The grocery store is fast becoming a cardio workout. haha

Old world mystery

I cut the strips I would need for the first step of the old world country fantasy mystery from Quilted Twins.

We spent the evening in the living room watching television and I didn't want to go upstairs to my sewing room, so, I decided to treadle the seams. It isn't as fast but, it gets the job done.

It didn't take long before I had the first clue done.

This is Becky's first mystery, and I was really looking forward to making it. I like her quilts and wanted to try something new. I had trouble finding the material I would need here. I needed 3 constants and the rest will be scrappy. I think  today I will work on clue 2.

string quilt

I have been working on this string block quilt for a long time. It was interrupted by my back surgery. I restarted it as soon as I was comfortable to treadle again. So far it has all been done on the treadle.
There are lots of strings in this quilt. I have it to the top stage and need to decide on borders. I am glad to be far enough along that I can clean up the mess. A string quilt tends to be very messy.

It was pumpkin carving time with our Grandchildren last weekend and it was great fun.

string along

Moda is having a string along December 28, 2018, and I thought I would participate providing I can keep up  with good fortune mystery.
Here is the intro post
Here is where I saw it
I really enjoy string piecing on my treadle. It is in my living room, and I can watch tv with or without my husband. It doesn't make too much noise to hear the tv.

And I have no shortage of strings.

I have this string spider web that I work on from time to time. I am using a 1 1/2 inch moda jelly roll, but it gets monotonous very quickly. I am more of a scrappy girl.

And this spider web that has been around for awhile. I haven't finished assembling it.

I have even used strings as sashings.

I'm not sure which I will work on during the string along. I am sure I will find more string ufos if I poke around.

small world

For the rainbow scrap challenge, I have added the rest of the churndash blocks to the snow days quilt.

This is a "the world is a small place" post. I had been busy adding strings to phone book paper for a string quilt in my living room. True, it makes a mess, but I have gotten many blocks done by switching my thinking to String/crumb piecing on Saturdays and in my living room. I wasn't overly worried about the mess and what company would think, since we rarely have any living room company any more. And with age comes a certain lack of concern of what others think.
I use phone book paper for my foundation. It is so much easier to piece any kind of string, easier to rip off, and easier on the pocket book. Our phone book pages are getting smaller, so I am on the look out for bigger books for bigger pages. While visiting my daughter in Utah, I brought one of her phone books home with me. the pages were bigger and the book was thicker. It takes a long time to use up a phone book, but I am working on it.

Well, you guessed it. we had company. The missionaries from church arrived one evening. I knew right away, I loved one of the missionaries, as he was interested in everything and curious much like my own children. He wanted to know how the treadle worked, and what I was doing, and how I was doing it. He was from Utah, and the other Elder was from Idaho.

As he was closely examining the diamond blocks, he discovered that one of the blocks had the listing of his parents phone number on the back of the block. How incredible is that?! I had 80 blocks and he found near the top the one block with his parents name and number... in Indiana... at my house... in my messy living room...

How could we doubt that God knows each of us and is mindful of each of us and that we are all connected as part of His family. all of us...every single one of us...any color...any place....
I am so grateful.
