weekend strings

I have this pile of scraps, on the floor, near the treadle sewing machine, again. I wanted to get it sewn up and gone before the end of the weekend. I don't think it will make the room feel Christmasy at all.
I have started another wonky courthouse steps from Bonnie Hunter. I think I could make 10 with my collection of strings and crumbs. My first one isn't quilted yet.

Even after a sewing spree, the pile didn't go away until I threw what is left in a bag and hid it in a basket. sigh.... but I did sew a few blocks together.

I have 20 more blocks sewn, pressed, and trimmed for a total of 50.

I have another 5 ready to trim.

Stash report April 15, 2018

I was gifted a magic bundle of scraps. I have kept them near my cutting table waiting for inspiration to strike. But, as I was cleaning, I rediscovered them, and decided it was time to just do something, even if it was just throw them into the string bucket. There were pieces already sewn together, mostly 1 1/2 inch strips. The fabrics were so cute, I just knew there had to be a good use for them.

They were not all the same size at all. I thought about just cutting them into 4 patches and 9 patches, but, there would be so many, but not enough for any one scrappy project. Then it hit me. I needed to work on Birch trees, and these would be great sewn together for the strips. It would not be a big waste in time or function. And I would be moving a project I already have, forward. Score!

Stash report February 10, 2018

I made a few more string units for birch trees on string Saturday.

I spun more natural dorset fleece for spinning Sunday

and yesterday I quilted a customer quilt.

and spread out a new mess looking for a navy background for my rug hooking project- Uncle Sam's hat. And, before I knew it, I had decided to sort and measure all the blue wool. It was so much fun petting the wool and thinking of all the projects I want to make, but, sorting wasn't even on the to do list anywhere. Now I have to add 'put it all away' on the to do list.

And I am late with last week's stash report

birch trees

As one of my rainbow scrap challenge quilts for 2018, I am making birch trees. I started by making a few string blocks in more upbeat colors. I cut one strip 2 inches wide and 2 strips 1 1/2 inches wide.
I cut the main blocks 12 inches to start with, and I trimmed them to 12 inches after adding the pieced strips.

The quilts I have seen that I like the best are done with solid colors. I was going to use any light blue scraps I liked in my drawer, but they were all too busy, so I did use the only light blue solid I could find. They look gray in the picture but they are a light blue. I just put a ruler on the block at an angle and sliced the square.

I rejoined the pieces after I inserted the strips. This is very fun and about as improv as I get. It will be fun to see all the colors at the end of the year. If I do 2 every month, I will have 20 blocks. But I think I will want it bigger, so some months I may make more than 2 blocks.

Stash report and mysteries

I finished with clue # 3 of On ringo Lake mystery quilt. I just used the sew and flip method, But I made sure to count and keep the right and left pieces separate. Knowing me, I would have just kept going past the number I needed. This helped me make sure I made the change. There is a link up on Bonnie Hunter's quiltville blog to see everyone's progress.

I bought these fat quarters during a sale on craftsy. They are aged muslin. They look almost brushed. I don't have a plan for them, I just loved them and they were on sale.:)

I had a chance to do some string piecing. Jo's country junction is having a weekly challenge to work on finishing the quilts in the book string fling by Bonnie Hunter. The quiltville book I have nearly all the quilts started or finished is scraps and shirttails not string fling. I too was hoping to do all the quilts from one book. so for my reckoning in scraps and shirttails...

Virginia Bound is done, used on our bed until I put Grand Illusion on our bed.
Cactus patch  is a top waiting for it's turn on the quilt frame
Star gazing is a top waiting to be quilted
Carolina Crossroads  was started as the first mystery and just needs borders
Hand me downs- nothing
nifty thrifty - nothing
Swing your partner - I have the fabric pulled
bargain basement is a top waiting for the quilting
shirtails - I have a few of the triangles set aside
bargello in plaid - I have been cutting the strips
perkiomen dreams  and denim rails - I don't think I will make but who knows.

I will have to check on what I have done in string fling next week.

In the spirit of strings,  I like to treadle my string piecing on my singer treadle on Saturdays while my hubby and I watch TV.  I am making narrow string strips for a quilt that uses these as inserts.

I still need more piano key strings for a border.

and I just made some slabs when I didn't like the strips for either of the other projects.

I have cleaned out some fabric, I knew I wouldn't use, which has helped me improve my numbers.
I hope to use more than added this year even if it is by fractions.

more boxy stars

Friday is our quilting circle at the library. I had decided I wanted to make more blocks for my patriotic boxy stars  here. I needed 10 more blocks. When I came home, I had all the quarters together and one flip corner sewn to each block.

While watching Christmas movies, I added the other flip corner, marked for the bonus triangles with the Bonnie Hunter's Bonus buddy, and finished sewing them.

I just used scissors to cut them apart.

 I love the bonus triangles

I even sewed 6 blocks together.  Hopefully, today, I can finish the other 4 blocks, and I can attach them to the rest of the quilt. I also want to do some string piecing today for string Saturday.

This quilt has depleted most of my dark blue 2 1/2 inch strips but I still have all the other blue strips overflowing. And the red drawer doesn't even look like anything is missing  sigh....
So far I am current with the quiltville mystery on Ringo lake.

Stash report OCtober 29, 2017

Boo
I found some great stuff at the quilt show's garage sale.
This was a ziplock bag of vintage 3 inch squares more or less. I love the fabrics.
just a few of these orphan blocks
and a cute tiny purse handle

a baggie of 3/4 hexagons and papers, many of the fabrics are vintage. One of the silent auction items was a huge iris container full of 1 inch hexies already basted. Oh my. It went for nearly 100.00 dollars.
 a bag of flannel scraps
and a roll of 1/4 yards of black and white fabrics... someday...

I am still working on the Marie Webster block

But I am pretty excited that I have finished sewing all the cheddar sampler blocks which was my goal. I am still piecing string blocks for the border.

organizing drawers

Oh, how I needed to do a little cleaning. Everything was in jeopardy of being lost. I couldn't find anything. But, what I find interesting is the amount of fabric fuzz I vacuumed from the drawers, which are closed. I made a donation bag for stuff I need to give to guild. And I am sure I still kept more stuff than I should.

um ... no I could die in there. If I trip and fall, I am a goner.

This cheddar block is called birds in the air

I made a few more string blocks for the cheddar sampler for string Saturday.

pineapple blossom orange

Last month's color for rainbow scrap challenge was not a color I needed for my two ongoing rainbow quilts, so it was good to get them out again and work on them.
Ready for the final round on the pineapple blossoms - quiltville

I am making rows of 5 so the orange row is ready to assemble

There was a little purple going on in the sewing room this week too.

2 sides of the quiltville leader/ender challenge are attached. The bucket of hourglass units is nearly empty. So there is an end to this quilt. The plan didn't include borders, which will seem odd, but appreciated.

For string Saturday, I am making bigger shirt blocks for sashing I hope to need next month for my one monthly goal. I have to really dig in the string bucket to find shirt pieces. hmm where have they gone?
