floor triangles bits

 Underneath my sewing machine, I keep a basket of triangle cut offs and bits. While I was cleaning the floor of my sewing room, I needed to handle a bit of a mess they created. They play while I am not looking, and walk about the room at night.  Corralling them was easy, but not playing with them was impossible. Mostly they are smaller than a 2 1/2 inch hst. Some are very tiny.

I know I want to make ( someday)  a basket quilt with 2 inch hsts, and, I want to make ditch lillies (bonnie hunter) with 1 1/2 in hsts. I like the idea of sewing wonky triangles to the corner of a 2 1/2 inch square for a confetti quilt and little hourglass blocks.

I found this little beauty at suzies scraps here. I really like her blog for inspiration. I used her ideas for a broken dishes block here. and her tile block here.

I was really excited to find another way to use the quirky "trash" triangles I have in a box. and it is so cute. It is also another great way to use older scraps that are not nearly as modern. Although, all fabric trends repeat over time.

I put them together like a 9 patch. Right now, I have a bunch of 2 1/2 inch squares cut in cream. When I use those I might make the plain 2 squares into a single piece. I like making these better than wonky stars.

Purple stars

Last week, I stopped getting comments in my email...again. It took me three days to figure it out and change my settings again. I was using the new blogger. Was anyone else having that problem?

I have collected little bits of triangles, mostly, for the shoofly leader/ ender from last year. The size I am making uses 1 1/2 inch hsts. I am getting very close to finishing all the blocks I have kitted for that quilt, so, I can, with great abandon, use these little bits in a few of my rainbow projects.... or get rid of them.

One of my rainbow projects this year, is my wonky stars. The little bits are perfect for them. I won't have enough blocks by the end of the year for a very big quilt, but, I don't think I want to do them again next year.

They are very cute ...

I searched through my ufo projects for a quick finish that might have purple in them. I found two, that I hope to sneak in and finish. This is an older ufo, pumpkin patch, that I have all the blocks made. I spread it out on the design bed. I can get the top finished in August, but, I have a longer list of customer quilts, so, that, I might not get it quilted. I'll see.

I hope you are up to some purple scrappiness and are well. I am so glad I have scraps to play with in these interesting times.

Friday is our quilting circle at the library. I had decided I wanted to make more blocks for my patriotic boxy stars  here. I needed 10 more blocks. When I came home, I had all the quarters together and one flip corner sewn to each block.

While watching Christmas movies, I added the other flip corner, marked for the bonus triangles with the Bonnie Hunter's Bonus buddy, and finished sewing them.

I just used scissors to cut them apart.

 I love the bonus triangles

 I even sewed 6 blocks together.  Hopefully, today, I can finish the other 4 blocks, and I can attach them to the rest of the quilt. I also want to do some string piecing today for string Saturday.

This quilt has depleted most of my dark blue 2 1/2 inch strips but I still have all the other blue strips overflowing. And the red drawer doesn't even look like anything is missing  sigh....

So far I am current with the quiltville mystery on Ringo lake.

I cut these 1/2 square triangles the wrong size. I needed 2 1/2 and they were cut 2 inches. I didn't want to waste them, so I planned to sew them later. I have moved them several times around my sewing room as I need space to work on other projects. I am tired of them not finding a home.

I just decided to sew them and put them in the pieces and parts bins with other bonus triangles.After all the procrastinating, they took 15 minutes and were now more useful.

 I also have been piling the bonus triangles from my patriotic boxy stars. There should be 160 2 inch 1/2 square triangles. They are sewn, I just need to press them.

 Last year at this time, I was blogging about En Provence mystery quilt. and we had a tiny bit of snow. We did today as well. Somethings change and some things stay the same.

all the Grandpas star blocks are finished, and 1, 280 half square triangles are gone. I didn't have to make a single half square triangle for these blocks. They were the "bonus" triangles from flip and sew corners of other quilt projects. I had already sewed them at that time. More about this here and here

Those silly ends that have to be trimmed, and the wastebasket had walked off on vacation.

I have more glitter blocks finished.

There was really no change, so I wasn't as motivated to share. I have been using fabric but nothing to report yet.

I have yet another long time ufo in a project box. This is a wonderful quilt to use all the bonus triangles that I have been accumulating. And the blocks are really fun to make. And when I do the final pressing, it is just so fun to see what it became. I have some very old 1/2 square triangles that finish at 2 inches.

When I first started making Bonnie Hunter quilts, the blocks were more kitchen sink type blocks. Bonnie has refined her scrappy approach to a more color controlled scrappy style. So my bonus triangles, are now baggies that are one color. I don't know if any one quilt will make enough triangles to make it's own quilt. So that is a worry for later.

The pattern was from an Addicted to scraps column in the March/April 2012 quiltmaker magazine

the mock up of the quilt shows 80 blocks 8 x 10. I will have to see if I like it that way. I really like the look of just the block.

I generally sew the bonus triangles at the time I am sewing the original block. Then I throw them in a drawer. Every now and then, I open the drawer, panic at the chaos, and determine to do "something" with the mess. I have a couple of marathon pressing and trimming sessions, and then, count and baggie them. I usually love the process, and so I am more likely to use them and make them again. I am really happy that Bonnie has "invented" the bonus triangle buddy. I really use it, and it has helped with the trimming process.

When I opened the box, I have 28 blocks, only 52 more to go.

bargain basement shirts

I have been accidentally working on Bonnie Hunter's bargain basement quilt from scraps and shirttails. Accidentally, in that, I have been cutting through scraps, and I ran into a batch of shirt yokes and cuffs and collars. I didn't think I would have enough to cut out the whole bargain basement, but I could make a dent in the cutting. I had enough to make all the 3 1/2 inch rectangles I would need. so any littler pieces went toward any other pieces I would need.

I was in luck when I found, while sorting, several 3 1/2 inch odd shirting blocks that I could use for the specialty squares. I had a few 4 patch and 1/2 square triangles that I could make work. It was so easy to keep going....

I found all the 6 1/2 inch strips I would need in the 2 inch bin of strips. It is amazing how easily this quilt is coming together. Such a happy accident!

I have been working on the bonus triangle black hole. I have pressed and counted and trimmed.

I should have some options for quilt with all that I am finding int the BIG bin that I have used to toss and forget.

unfortunately, the 2 1/2 inch squares that I had nearly used up in projects has filled back up to this. I don't really want the squares. I can just use strips when I need them but when that is the last bit of a scrap it would be wasteful not to cut them. I find these velveeta containers at goodwill and they are perfect for the squares.

I am in the mood to keep cutting shirts and parts. I forget how much I love the look and feel of recycled shirt fabric in a quilt.until I get to play with them again.
I found this pattern that I think would work with plaids. Although, my inspiration board has several, and I have a couple ideas from Bonnie's scraps and shirttails books. I love these books

I like this, but it wasn't what I thought I wanted, so back to the drawing board, so to speak.

I needed it more dark then light. I decided to add black every other one.

It would have been better to have changed to a black thread, but I don't think it was obvious on the front so .. oh well.  I keep a neutral thread on my machine all the time. It works 99% of the time. I sewed twice using the bonus buddy. I love the bonus triangles

They finish at 2 inches and are so cute!There should be 96 of them in black and white and 96 in print and white

I didn't press the triangles at first so I could nest the seams. The black on the left and the color on the right.

I think that is better.

I am working on the hour glass blocks for this year's leader/ender challenge. I just need to finish the neutrals for my swap partners.

And it is back on the design wall. Progress is slowing since every seam has to be pinned and each seam is getting longer.
