more green scraps

green is the rainbow scrap challenge for the month of May.

I am playing catch up on the 2 inch hsts I need for a basket quilt of the future. I need 70 of 10 different colors by the end of the year. I was only planning to do pink this month.

But, I was on a roll, and made blue, yellow, and green.

I finished my windmills blocks in green.

And, I cut 3 1/2 inch squares for ditch lilies. I still have time to work on the 1 1/2 hsts that I need for this quilt. I think by the end of the month, I will have it all cut and ready for another day.

sugar grove

I have a few more sugar grove blocks finished. I am cutting orange this month, and I am sure that will make a few more block kits at the ready. I think I have a little over 20 already completed and another 20 blocks kits, and I need 72 blocks. I have been making them as leader enders this year but the focus was cutting and sewing 1800 hsts for the rainbow scrap challenge. Sewing the blocks is just a bonus.

sugar grove progress

Now that I have 5 months of colors, I can make blocks for sugar grove.  One of my rainbow scrap challenges is to cut all the hsts I will need for the Bonnie Hunter quilt called sugar grove. My goal for the challenge is just to cut the hsts by color each month for a whole year. I can't stand not making a few. At first, I tried webbing the whole block. I found I couldn't be careful enough with the matching points. Now, I sew horizontal rows and then, join the rows. I piece much better that way.

sugar grove

One of my rainbow scrap challenges is to cut all the hsts I will need for the Bonnie Hunter quilt called sugar grove. Each month I make 180 hsts in the color of the month. I have enough variety to make a few whole blocks as I go along. I purchased the pattern last year to use the leftover hsts I have been saving. It hasn't really worked that way, so far. I liked the idea in the quilt of using matching fabric diagonally. I didn't have enough that match. So, I have had to cut and sew most of them from scraps to make the sets I need. It hasn't been tedious doing a set amount every month. I am sure I would not be making it if I just tried to do it all at once.  I want 72 blocks. I have 12.

They are not perfect, even though I am trimming. But I think it will be fine in the whole quilt. It is such a fun way to use up scraps. And each block is a fun surprise when finished.

cutting green scraps

I started with 4 pounds 7 ounces of 2 1/2 inch strips in the drawer. That is at least 12 yards worth of fabric. My goal was to cut it in half by cutting and organizing. I cut greens for 2 rows for Jos checkers, the 2024 stashbuster, and a windmill quilt. I pulled out any pieces that were less than 12 inches.

I cut for a traffic jam quilt. Although, I could just dig in my 2 1/2 inch squares bin for the squares.

I have 2 pounds and 4 ounces left in the drawer. goal success. I tried sorting what was left into different green families. I found 9 wof strips for a jelly roll.

The small pieces I cut into hsts for monkey wrench and anything else that might present itself. But, wait, didn't I try to empty all the green hsts for sugar grove? duh

green sugar grove

One of my rainbow scrap challenge projects this year is sugar grove pattern by Bonnie Hunter

I have 3 drawers of either sewn hsts or the cut pieces to make them. My goal for sugar grove is to pull from the drawers for the number and colors I need to make the blocks.

I calculated that I need 7 sets of 5 matching in each color this year, for the center of each of the72  blocks.

5

I also need 14 sets of 4 matching for each color

4

And, I  need 14 sets of 3 matching for each color

3

I need 14 sets of 2 matching for each color

2
And 14 singles for a total of 180 hsts per color.

1
Surprisingly, I did not need to cut any additional hsts for the month of green. I had enough already made or cut. They just needed to be sewn to have enough this month. I made ziplock baggies for the sets of 5, and, I will add other colors to make the block kits, and, then, I can take them with me to sew.

30s baby quilt start

Last year, for the rainbow scrap challenge, I wanted to include an older ufo baby quilt using 30s fabric. But, before I could start it, I put it in a safe place. And... it went missing. I just found it again. And I want to try again for 2024. Fingers crossed, I won't misplace it again. I think it will work for the most basic color months. And, it will have very little pressure to complete.

sugar grove goal

I have decided that one of my 2024 rainbow scrap challenge projects, will be Bonnie Hunter's pattern, sugar grove. The rainbow scrap challenge has helped me with the boredom of bigger projects by keeping the work in manageable portions each month. I really like this quilt, but, don't think I would do it, without the monthly color prompts. The block requires sets of 5, 4, 3, and 2. I  have a drawer of leftover scrappy hsts that need a home, But, I am pretty sure I will need to cut for the larger sets, and still try to use the ones in the drawer as much as possible. I started this project earlier when the pattern first came out, but have done very little since.

I have gathered some sets concentrating on the sets of 5.

webbing each block will help them stay together until I can sew them.

I am using foam boards to make sure they are in order

So, now, I can hardly wait for January's color to be announced to see if this will work for next year.

sugar grove play

I have these drawers of hsts 2 1/2 inch- finish at 2 inch. Some times, I cut more than I need, or make more than I need. These drawers have been collecting for a long time. I really liked a recent Bonnie Hunter pattern called sugar grove, and, I thought that would be a great pattern to use these little treasures. I had fun digging through the hsts and making plans.

I don't think I will have any trouble finding all the corner/ single hsts for the project. The problem will be finding the matching 5 or 4 for the centers. No real problem, I think I can find fabric somewhere around here to cut more. I don't think it will move into the 5 quilt list for some time. I could cut the center matching hsts next year for the rainbow scrap challenge. But, it makes a great bribery project to get something less fun done. We will see.

floor triangles bits

Underneath my sewing machine, I keep a basket of triangle cut offs and bits. While I was cleaning the floor of my sewing room, I needed to handle a bit of a mess they created. They play while I am not looking, and walk about the room at night.  Corralling them was easy, but not playing with them was impossible. Mostly they are smaller than a 2 1/2 inch hst. Some are very tiny.

I know I want to make ( someday)  a basket quilt with 2 inch hsts, and, I want to make ditch lillies (bonnie hunter) with 1 1/2 in hsts. I like the idea of sewing wonky triangles to the corner of a 2 1/2 inch square for a confetti quilt and little hourglass blocks.

2 1/2 inch

2 1/2 inch

4 1/2 inch

I have little beauty blocks I am making every now and then.

monkey wrench and lil beauty basket

I have had a wonderful time "cleaning" the floor underneath my sewing machine. I could even vacuum. haha

fish school

Bonnie Hunter has a new leader/ender project for the next year called fish school. I have officially declared easy breezy blocks done, so, I can take the challenge and start working on this project. Bonnie is using 2 inch strips and HSTS, but, I have too many 2 1/2 inch strips, so, I am going to use those. I have a hsts die that I can use to cut 6 at a time. I started cutting strips to 9 1/2 inches to fit that die.  I went through a drawer and cut 115. By calculations I will need a gazillion hsts over the next year to keep these going, but 115 is a start. I think I will cut strips for this and another easy breezy block with the rainbow scrap challenge colors next year. I am not sure how this can be used as a leader/ender. - sewing the hsts? - making the block?

a little at a time goes a long way.

shirt triangles

Sometimes, while cutting shirts into useable pieces, there are off cuts that are not really useful for big pieces. I tend to throw them into a bucket to deal with later. I was in the mood to sort and cut. Some of these pieces will be great for string or crumb blocks.

As I dug into the bucket, some just went into another bucket for strings, but, a few, I could cut into HSTS. Most of my goals this month involve the longarm, which is currently busy.  I had fun just playing in the scraps.

zuckerwatte in progress

I have sew enjoyed the pink inspiration with the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. Looking at the design walls all filled with pink, makes me happy. I don't have a design wall or even a design floor, but, I sure have pink scraps. I am doing rsc a little different this year, by concentrating on ufos by color. I miss sewing the blocks, and watching them grow, though.

It was time to dig around in my pink 2 1/2 inch drawer for the rainbow scrap challenge. The drawer was overflowing. I knew that I would need 2 1/2 HSTS - ( half square triangles ). for a bonnie Hunter quilt zuckerwatte from her book string fling. I chose to add it to the list for January, because, it is a mostly pink ufo, and, it would help clean out the drawer strips drawer.

sneaky red in the drawer

I grabbed the short pieces, and, this time, I separated the wof strips from the drawer. I had no idea how many I would have. I needed 430 HSTS - ( half square triangles ). So, I cut and cut and cut, and repeat.

This is what was left when I was done cutting - a mostly empty drawer. hooray

I sewed 240 HSTS - ( half square triangles )

trimmed and ironed

And was left with the extras. I am thrilled if this is all I get done for the month.
