traffic jam blocks

I decided it was time to count and decide about my traffic jam quilt blocks. I made these this year as part of  the rainbow scrap challenge. I believe this was a Pat Sloan qal. I used 2 1/2 inch squares from my scrap bin and 4 1/2 inch square for the corners from the color of the month. The blocks are 12 inch finished. My goal for the year was 12 for a 3 x 4 layout. Now, I think that is too small. The plan is to work on these again next year with a better plan for finishing. It is a sure bet I have enough 2 1/2 inch squares in the scrap bin for next year.  Maybe a 2 1/2 inch squares sashing?

hen and chicks

I did a little sewing on the hens and chicks this week for the rainbow scrap challenge . Which was a hard choice, since the fall weather has been perfect here. The trees were turning, and the temperature was great, and the sun was shining.

I still have 2 black and all the brown to do.

And one lonely sugar grove block.

a little more black

I played catch up with sugar grove blocks for September and the rainbow scrap challenge. I had another black drawer that I didn't even remember. I am certainly set for 2 1/2 inch black strips. I was able with the new color to make 5 more block kits. I am sure it is time to do a real time count and decide what to do next. I am trying to make kits without repeating the same color in each block, but it seems there are a lot of over flowing bags of 3s and maybe 2s. Somehow, I hope to continue this project into next year.

hen and chicks

I worked a little on hens and chicks for the rainbow scrap challenge.

I am recovering from a lumpectomy. My sewing time is limited. But, I am looking ahead to my 2025 goals. And, I am doing well. These beautiful flowers are from my son in Florida. He even remembered my favorite flowers.

gray rows

I dug out my gray and black 2 1/2 inch strips and cut for 2 rows of Jos checkers.

And, I made 2 rows, and I am considering this quilt project done for making blocks. I may still use the rest of the year to sew rows together for the rainbow scrap challenge.

We have a new roof in progress. So glad I am not doing it. haha

ripple blocks

I haven't had much sewing machine time this week. I did cut gray for Jos checkers. And, I made orange ripple blocks. I will try to sew black this month and brown next month. I have all the 4 patches sewn for the sashings on my baby 30s project. I am not making any more traffic jam blocks this year. I have kept up with the cutting for monkey wrench blocks, but, have fallen behind in the sewing. I'm done with the blocks I needed for the windmill quilt.

Now, that I am finishing up the blocks I had planned for the year, I need to decide if I put them away or work to finish them. I picked easy projects for the year to finish, but, I feel I really want to continue with the hens and chicks. With my tiny tuesday sampler from 2019, I didn't finish out the year, and will need to continue with blocks if I want to finish it. It is harder to do later. But, there is something about this time of year that I want to be done. I will also have surgery next week.

finishing orange

I had to finish the oranges for sugar grove or I would fall way behind, it would only take 1 month to do that.

1s, 2s, 3s

I was able to complete 5 more complete sets of blocks and add a few more to complete sets. The baggies are still full waiting for another color.

I finished the last of the orange hen and chicks blocks.

And I made only one traffic jam block in orange and decided to move on to dark.

I didn't make any ripple blocks in orange.. yet

orange blocks

I worked on the hen and chicks this week in orange for the rainbow scrap challenge. I made three sets but didn't get to the 4th. Some of the pieces for the minis were smaller than my thumb LOL. I hope to still catch up with the rest of my orange scraps soon. I am already making plans for next year How about you? If you could see my 2 1/2 inch strip bag in blue, you could guess that will be a priority next year.

Today is my 50th wedding anniversary. It doesn't seem that long, but, I also don't believe I was ever that young either.

orange scraps

I have been working on my hsts for sugar grove and the rainbow scrap challenge. This month's color is orange and I definitely want orange in the quilt. I cut and made 7 sets of 5 and 14 sets of 4. I have this month's goal of 4 patches for the baby 30s quilt made.

orange scraps

My focus this week for the rainbow scrap challenge. was  Jo's checkers . I sewed the white 2 1/2 inch square to each of my 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles for the 2 rows I wanted to make in orange. I have 3 more rows to make for this quilt this year.

I made 2 rows with 15 sets in each.

When I cleaned up around my sewing machine, I found 4 matching 4 1/2 inch squares in aqua. I thought I had made all the traffic jam blocks last month. nope Luckily, I had the very rare urge to clean more thoroughly. haha

I have reached a little health bump in the road and I am not sure what it will mean, yet.

orange windmills

I made windmills in orange this week as part of my rainbow scrap challenge projects. I love how easy these are to make. Maybe this can be my go to donation quilt block. I am using 2 1/2 inch strips this year and all it takes is an 18 inch strip cut into 4 1/2 inch rectangles after I sew it to an 18 inch background. Although it is August and I still need to look at a block to know which way to turn the little blocks haha

And with these 2 blocks, I am current with the hen and chicks to start orange. The drawer with all the blocks that are finished is a pretty sight and makes me smile.

I will trim later

I had a quilt finish this week here
Have a happy weekend.

I had a chance to cut my 2 1/2 inch orange strips into my rainbow scrap challenge projects.

L-R  jos checkers, windmill, and 2024 stashbuster. I like orange and look forward to sewing these this month. Still on the do list is cutting for sugar grove and sewing 4 patches for baby 30s, and the new orange hens and chicks and traffic jam.  sew much fun

I am still working on aqua hens and chicks.

a few more aqua scraps

Not much aqua scrap sewing this week. I did finish 1 1/2 inch ripple blocks, I made fewer than my goal, so more may still be made.

I did 3 hen and chicks blocks and almost another sugar grove block. I did make all the aqua sugar grove hsts and sorted them into their bags. I was able to make more complete block sets for the quilt.

I did finish every which way quilt - ummm no aqua

aqua scraps

I feel like I am a little behind on aqua scraps this month. I still have the majority of my projects undone. But....

I made 2 rows of Jos checkers for the rainbow scrap challenge. This month the color is aqua.

I finally finished the hen and chicks for June in blue.

And I made 1  traffic jam block in teal. I have another cut and ready.

aqua scraps

I have all the sets of 5 and 4 hsts sewn for sugar grove blocks in aqua. I have a lot of  small scraps this month to use in my projects. I will have no problem cutting for the rest.

I am slowly making the sugar grove blocks as leader/enders

I cut and made my blocks for windmill.

a start of aqua

Aqua is the monthly color for the rainbow scrap challenge. I didn't have that many in the drawer of 2 1/2 inch strips. But, I dug through them all, pulling out the smaller pieces and cutting for my projects.

For my baby 30s quilt, I have all the blocks done and plan on working on the 4 patches for the sashing. I sewed them all in twosies ( print and background) and cut them all. I did the math and need to sew at least 32 each month to finish at the end of the year.

I dug through my orphan triangles and found enough for the sets of 5 I need each month for sugar grove. They are sewn and pressed. I will need to cut more in aqua for for the rest of the 180 I need each month.

I found 56 wof strips for a homemade jelly roll. The next pile were the good sized pieces that I will fill a new drawer for next time and the bottom pile are all the smaller sizes I will use to cut triangles for sugar grove and monkey wrench.

I cut for windmill, windmill, jos checkers, and stashbuster.

finishing with blue scraps

I have my blue projects for June done a little early. But, I might still play a little with blue bits and pieces. I have spent some time cleaning out my son's old room and planning some quilting areas in the room. I am dreaming of having room for storing all my quilts I want to still keep. They are playing all over the house, making a mess. They may not want to give up their freedom and be confined to a small closet.

I made 2 traffic jam blocks

so fun

I made 3 more ripple blocks

inch by inch

and 2 more sugar grove blocks

step by step

there is progress
