I started this quilt as a means to use my large stash of up cycled shirt fabrics. Show off is a free pattern from quilted twins

I had the rows together in 2020 and it has waited for quilting. As part of my 5 quilt project, it has finally had it's turn on the long arm. It is bigger than I expected - king size - I love it. It is so soft and comfy.

102 x 102 = 28 yards

I used a plaid for the backing, free form bubbles for quilting, and navy binding.

My quilt infatuation

floor mess

My strip bins overfloweth. The big problem is the floor around them is collecting strips as well. I don't like the mess of sorting into colors, so, I wait until the situation is urgent. I am trying to clean the floor in my sewing room. It has to be done.

This is the 1 1/2 inch strip drawer unleashed. Hard to believe all this was in one drawer. 

The big pile of neutrals was a mess on the floor which prompted my attention. I sat on the floor making piles of color.

What to do with them?

 Their permanent home will not hold any more. I have tried to keep them in a smaller bin - it didn't fit

I found this plastic container, and, I could get most of them here.

But, there were still a lot of neutrals with no home. I had an extra waste basket that I repurposed for them. It will be easier to dig through them, this way, than, an organized stack. I think it will work.

 I webbed the Irish chain quilt at retreat last week. This was one of my rainbow scrap challenge projects. I have worked on it for 2 years.

I spent this week pinning rows and sewing the  top together. It is ready for a back and some binding.

blue 9 patch finish

This quilt began as a challenge this year from my daughter. She had too many 2 1/2 inch strips, and wanted to make a quilt with them. I had a blue 2 1/2 inch strip drawer that I couldn't close. She suggested a race. I talked about racing my daughter using 2 1/2 inch strips here.

We finished in June. Check here to see who won. I have been waiting for an opening on the longarm to do the quilting. I finished it last week and added the binding this week.

I used 3 large pieces of blue fabrics from my stash for the back. This is truly a scrappy quilt using up stash. I am so thankful my daughter motivated me, and, played along with me.

I found this little beauty at suzies scraps here. I really like her blog for inspiration. I used her ideas for a broken dishes block here. and her tile block here.

I was really excited to find another way to use the quirky "trash" triangles I have in a box. and it is so cute. It is also another great way to use older scraps that are not nearly as modern. Although, all fabric trends repeat over time.

I put them together like a 9 patch. Right now, I have a bunch of 2 1/2 inch squares cut in cream. When I use those I might make the plain 2 squares into a single piece. I like making these better than wonky stars.

I uncovered a small box with 6 inch squares. I believe, I bought it at a quilt show garage sale. I often wonder what the original quilter was planning and thinking while cutting her fabric into squares.

By donating her scraps, she has brought pleasure to my little world.

I didn't want to cut them down to 5 inch squares, but, I did look for inspiration in the charm pack patterns. I would just make the squares bigger, and, then, the quilt would be bigger.

I thought the squares looked coordinated enough, to just use them scrappy.  The squares are big almost 18 inches. I am using this project at the treadle in the evenings while hubby and I are watching tv. These projects are not "real" projects, and, I am in no hurry. My favorite fabric is the black with fruit, so, I am making sure to have one of them in every square. They are too big to press on my little treadle space, so I will press them when I am done.

And I have a top. I told my daughter that I was almost done, and, then, she planned on staying up all night to beat me. I'm too old for that nonsense, so, I got up early, finished, and texted her at 9:30 AM that I was done. There is two hours difference so she was still in bed. About 11:30 AM my time, she texted she was done too.  I win by time difference. I talked about racing my daughter using 2 1/2 inch strips here.

Ufo progress

I have finished 2 ufos so far for June and I have finished 10 for the year. The goal for ufos and the phd 2020 was 12. However, not all the ufos I have finished, were on my original list. I'm not sure how that counts. But, it has motivated me for sure. Countryside cottage is here. And silent night is here.

I've made progress on a few other projects from the list. Frolic mystery and unicorn quilt are ready to be quilted.

I am moving the rainbow projects started this year along - shine and row x row. But, I haven't really worked on the editya sitar baskets since January.

I started a "jelly roll" race with my daughter. And, I am happy to report, that I am putting blocks together for the rows. And, I think I am still ahead of her. Last I heard, she is sewing strips together.

More 9 patches and I am ready to start the rows.

I talked about racing my daughter using 2 1/2 inch strips here.  I threw in a couple of ringers. just to get rid of them. If they don't hide well with the others, I may have to replace them. My daughter just bought a longarm, maybe she has become distracted, And I can get this done before she notices.

And then, there were more. I enjoy working on these in the evening while we are watching Tv.

I talked about racing my daughter using 2 1/2 inch strips here. I think I am still ahead of her. But, neither of us is tipping our hand. I decided to throw a few red into the mix. It seems to go quickly when each set makes 2 blocks. I think I am aiming for 42 blocks for a 6 x 7 layout. That would be the equivalent of 63 jelly roll strips. I think Katie let slip, she is using 80 strips, so, she will win in scrap usage unless,..... I add borders.

I have made the second batch of pieced sashing strips for the quilted twins Old world mystery quilt. Here is the reveal for the old world mystery quilt at Quilted Twins.

It will be nice to start putting the mystery together.

Ah, look what happens if I let myself idle for a moment. I start something new. My daughter texted and said we should do a jelly roll race, which I took to mean race as in who wins. So out came my 2 1/2 inch strips and in blue. I think I am way ahead of her, but, she has a way of sneaking past me.

I like making these. It is very satisfying when they finished. It takes 1 1/2 strips of a light and a dark to make them. So far, I am using the treadle in the evening to put these together. I had seen this quilt at Mary quilts and had it on my inspiration board. Since, I wanted to make it someday, I used this idea for the race. Go team

I started putting all the pieces and parts together for Show off quilt, and, it went very quickly. I have all the rows together. This pattern calls for 9 1/2 inch squares, and is designed by the the quilted twins. They have a large selection of free patterns. I have a large stash of recycled shirt fabric, and I keep it separate, so, it grows. It is time to use it.

When I started, I was in no hurry, making the smaller pieces first. But, the blocks are big and it goes together quickly. It isn't even on a list somewhere, yet.

I need to make quilts using my large stash of recycled shirt fabrics. I am doing the old country mystery quilt through the quilted twins. They have a large selection of free patterns. I picked one, and have been cutting and sewing in preparation of making it. It takes a bit more time to work with shirts, even if the shirt has been cut for use.
There are fiddley parts of the shirt that are not even or long, but, still, have useable cotton fabric. I tend to try and use those pieces first. This pattern calls for 9 1/2 inch squares. I used mostly sleeves from a million shirts to cut the squares, and, then, cut the remainder into strips and triangles. Whatever I could get out of the rest of the sleeve, was how I decided to cut it. I still have a healthy size pile to cut into scrap user sizes.
I had very few 1 1/2 inch shirt strips that I could cut more than one for the sashing strips.

The pattern calls for a pile of 9 patches as well.

I am using this quilt as an evening project on my treadle while hubby and I are watching TV, and, we are too tired to do anything else. It's amazing how tiring self isolating, and, not going anywhere or doing anything special can make you. The grocery store is fast becoming a cardio workout. haha

This is the perfect project for me to work on these days. It can be compartmentalized and is repetitive enough that I don't have to think.
I am making these 9 patches as part of garden party quilt that is a bonnie hunter pattern from her book addicted to scraps.  After sewing a million 1 1/2 inch black and white strips together, I subcut them into the 2 sets I need to make 9 patches.

I love just feeding the pieces through my sewing machine. I just let the rhythm sooth the mind and soul.

And if that wasn't enough, I have cute little 9 patches when I am done.

new rug hooking project

I have been very slow on rug hooking my circles rug. I started 4 circles in January, and have just finished them. I was doing this as an in between project. I had finished the Cleveland rug, and I hadn't decided what the next project would be.  I have some really great projects in the planning stages. I just couldn't decide.

It will be a big rug. Each of the bigger circles are 4 1/2 inches and I fill in with whatever size will fit. I have a long way to go, But, I have a new project and I am setting this aside until next time.

Christmas lights

I have had a terrible time with my back lately. I haven't wanted to do much of anything. I visited a chiropractor and I think she was a little too rough. I am sure a little time will heal this. I have had scoliosis most of my life, but it has gotten worse.

 I did have a finish. This is my version of Christmas Lights mystery quilt from Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville. It was a 3 part series in Quiltmaker magazine January 2009. It is her 5th mystery and my 10th mystery finish. There are 5 more mysteries to go and 2 more that I started in different colors.
The next one in order is roll roll cotton boll. I have it pieced but it needs assembled.

Keeping with the Christmas theme that seems to consume my quilting year, I was gifted a bag of 4 inch Christmas squares. There were 120 of them and I cut background squares from my stash. I am sewing 9 patches with the hopes of making enough to make a disappearing 9 patch quilt.

I have been sewing En Provence blocks - a quiltville mystery from last year. There are many pieces in each block and 16 blocks. I am very happy with how well the blocks are piecing. I planned on trimming them, but very few needed any attention.

 The sashing strips are going to create a secondary star pattern - pretty exciting

 I try to make at least one glitter - Jen Kingwell block a day, because they are just fun. I don't want to focus on them just yet, so just a block or two keeps it going.

And in between en provence blocks and the glitter blocks, I have been using 9 patches for Carolina Crossroads as my leader and enders. It is amazing how many get finished just in between other piecing.
