frolic finish

 I have finished my one monthly goal for November. I finished frolic quiltville mystery quilt from 2019. I kept current on the clues until it was time to assemble the blocks. That seems to be my undoing. I take longer to do that, I guess. I really like the colors and pattern of the blocks. This will be my 19th finished quiltville mystery quilt. I have a page here that shows them from the first to the last that I have done. I still have rhododendron to quilt and grassy creek to add borders.

I used a flannel back and an older binding. I did free motion swirls on my longarm for the quilting.

One monthly goal frolic

I left frolic as a top in 2020. It required a border decision. I want to finish it for my November one monthly goal. Especially if, I want to make the new quiltville mystery, Chilhowie. I have all 18 of them made until this one, and grassy creek as a top, and rhododendron almost a top. I have a page at the top of the blog with pictures in order. I am not going to add another border. It is time to move it along.

 I was gifted 2 big bags of scraps from someone who has not been converted to the dark side of scrappy quilts, yet. It was full of treasures and a bit of bits too small even for me. They weighed 18 1/2 pounds which is close to 54 yards of fabric. It took a week to iron one of the bags and sort. I cut a few before a bum thumb, but, I could iron with the other hand. I find pleasure sorting through someone else's scraps, even though, I don't need any more than I already have, hiding in cracks and crevices of my own stash.

Maybe, I should eliminate 54 yards from my stash to make room. LOL The time will come, but, not yet.

Our guild had another open sew Saturday. I took what I had done on bonnie Hunter quilt zuckerwatte from her book string fling, and, decided to see how far I could get. With just 20 minutes to spare, I had the center top finished. It was a great boost. I had started at the beginning of January with only string blocks made. I cut a gazillion  HSTS - ( half square triangles ) ... sewn a bunch together, and made  rows. and blocks. 

    

Now that we have a new month, it is time to refocus on another set of goals. My one monthly goal at elm street quilts is to quilt my Frolic mystery quilt. 2020

the color for February is yellow at the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. So I will focus on finishing an older UFO from 2016 called boxy stars. My black and yellow version is a free pattern quilt called boxy stars from Bonnie Hunter. 

I want to finish baby snoopy as well.

phd 2021

I have had a hard time this year setting goals for next year. Maybe, because it has been an uncertain year. And yet, I finished the most ufo projects I have ever done in a single year. Now, that I think of it, I might be tired of finishing, but, I have many more to finish. I am not sure how to find the balance between finishing to accomplish, and starting new to enjoy. The more I stick to a list, the less I quilt.

Still, I've made my list for next year and the PHD 21.

1. Double wedding ring. This keeps showing up on my list of goals. It still intimidates me. I want to do the traditional scallop border....

2.frolic mystery quilt. This was last year's quiltville mystery and I had it done pretty quickly, but, I wanted to finish older ufos, and this was sidelined.

3. end of the rainbow. I think the white space makes me nervous to quilt. This was a rsc project for 2019. I really like it and hope to finish it this year.

And, with all the quilts I finished this year, I didn't finish any rainbow scrap challenge quilts. I finished the tops of 5 or 6, but, didn't get them quilted. And there are none on my 12 PHD2021 list. So, I need to fix that.

I think that is why I am trying to not start any new rsc projects this year, but, only finish them. I have a few to carry over. But, Angela has hinted there might be a group project.....I would HAVE to do that.

Ufo progress

I have finished 2 ufos so far for June and I have finished 10 for the year. The goal for ufos and the phd 2020 was 12. However, not all the ufos I have finished, were on my original list. I'm not sure how that counts. But, it has motivated me for sure. Countryside cottage is here. And silent night is here.

I've made progress on a few other projects from the list. Frolic mystery and unicorn quilt are ready to be quilted.

I am moving the rainbow projects started this year along - shine and row x row. But, I haven't really worked on the editya sitar baskets since January.

I started a "jelly roll" race with my daughter. And, I am happy to report, that I am putting blocks together for the rows. And, I think I am still ahead of her. Last I heard, she is sewing strips together.

frolic is a top?

The top for quiltville frolic mystery quilt is finished as per the pattern. And, I was ready to quilt it. I realized, if I add borders, it would be bigger for a bed.
I didn't plan on going bigger, but, it seems an off - size this way.
It stalls until I make a decision.

When I took to quilting in earnest, borders were my least favorite part of the process. I left many almost finished quilts in the ufo pile to avoid borders. I had to decide how to fix that problem. It wasn't easy, but, I can move right through the problem now, 90% of the time. Mostly, it was a practice problem. The more I did them, the better it was.  Lately, I have added borders to some really large quilts, and I am a little tired of that part of the process again. I need a little recreation sewing, so, I made a few blossoms blocks. How do you do borders?

 I did a little recreational cutting for clue 4 of the unity mystery quilt from quiltville.

I am working on a customer quilt to pass the time. I really like her colors.

I have the border pieces done for frolic mystery quilt. I just have to get brave enough to cut/trim the edges to add the borders

And I have made more shoofly blocks. Working with tiny scraps has been therapeutic, but I also realize, I don't need any "real" fabric. I could make a million quilts with just tiny little scraps and never see the end of them.

I spent an afternoon at Church as the second person for teaching a young boy having trouble with school. My job was easy. Just be there as a back up. I decided I would bring my sewing machine, and, take advantage of a floor to layout the rest of my frolic mystery quilt.
By mid afternoon, all the parts were sewn and I had 2 halves left to put together.

Before I went home, I had the top together this far. All that is left are the borders.

It was so nice yesterday, we took a walk in the park. There was just a little bit of snow left under the fallen tree. Spring is close I can feel it.

Friday group I had a chance to layout  frolic and make the center row and the smaller one before it. It is all downhill from here. There is a lot of pinning and matching. It was more fun to sit and pin when in the company of other quilter friends. With every row, I like it better.

This is part of my one monthly goal for March. I want to complete the top. I also want to quilt my sweet land of liberty quilt and  Lucy's baskets quilt.

My husband was scheduled to have back surgery today, but his cardiologist wanted to do a heart cath first, so the back surgery was cancelled. What a disappointment. But, we will still be visiting the hospital for the heart cath, and see what road that takes us down.

Friday group met, and I worked a little bit on rows for frolic mystery quilt. There is a lot of pinning involved in piecing these together.

And, there was no mention in the directions about joining the sashings together with the navy 1 1/2 inch square we cut earlier in clue 9. I had to scan the photos to see it.

Yesterday I had some great comments and my hand spazzed and I hit delete. Is there a way in blogger to find them?

Ok, I think I have made it to the assembly stage of frolic mystery quilt. I think I can relax and set it aside for a bit. I could use the break for my brain. And it will be fun to think about other projects. I have had an Editya Sitar brand new quilt kit I have wanted to make since last fall. I keep postponing it for lack of brain power. And I need to finish a Granddaughter quilt. These are the half blocks and quarter blocks for frolic.

I have the sashings ready to sash.

All of my frolic mystery quilt blocks are finished. They are not all matched sets. There were 4 blocks at the end that were only close enough. Those 4 will be buried in the mix and won't be that noticeable. We will say that they are part of the "charm". They are not my best work, either. I really just want them done, and I am not resewing any points. This mystery has seemed like a chore, but I am persevering. The aqua is very light and looks washed out in the pictures.

I need to make the half, and quarter blocks, and the sashing, before I can start putting this together.
