phd 2021

I have had a hard time this year setting goals for next year. Maybe, because it has been an uncertain year. And yet, I finished the most ufo projects I have ever done in a single year. Now, that I think of it, I might be tired of finishing, but, I have many more to finish. I am not sure how to find the balance between finishing to accomplish, and starting new to enjoy. The more I stick to a list, the less I quilt.

Still, I've made my list for next year and the PHD 21.

1. Double wedding ring. This keeps showing up on my list of goals. It still intimidates me. I want to do the traditional scallop border....

2.frolic mystery quilt. This was last year's quiltville mystery and I had it done pretty quickly, but, I wanted to finish older ufos, and this was sidelined.

3. end of the rainbow. I think the white space makes me nervous to quilt. This was a rsc project for 2019. I really like it and hope to finish it this year.

And, with all the quilts I finished this year, I didn't finish any rainbow scrap challenge quilts. I finished the tops of 5 or 6, but, didn't get them quilted. And there are none on my 12 PHD2021 list. So, I need to fix that.

Oh wait.. I finished birch trees from 2018 rsc

and woven checkerboard from 2019

I think that is why I am trying to not start any new rsc projects this year, but, only finish them. I have a few to carry over. But, Angela has hinted there might be a group project.....I would HAVE to do that.

a final goal for June

We had a quick thunderstorm early Saturday morning, with a close lightening strike, that left us without power all day. It was a long day waiting for power to be restored wondering what we may have lost. We have been hit several times over the years and have had to replace all kinds of things. We were relieved that everything seemed ok, until, we tried to use the internet. Our box was fried. It has been interesting just how much we depend on our internet. Att said they would send someone Sunday, but, no one came. We were told at 5PM we were next, and they could come as late as 8 pm, but no one came. This morning, We were told it would be Tuesday afternoon. So, we are learning about mobile hotspots.

My final one monthly goal was to make a top with my double wedding ring rows. I did that by the skin of my teeth this month. It took a bit to remember how I like to sew that. But, I am really loving it.

June goals

I like the beginning of a month, and a chance to set goals and see them finish.... or just progress. I am not overwhelmed with a month. It is a good time period for me to focus and then, let go if I need to move on to something else.

It's time to finish my double wedding ring. It looks sad here. It has been neglected. I think I have 3 sections to join together and then, the top is done.

I want to quilt a joann block of  the month called countryside cottage. The top and back are pieced, and the binding is made.

I really have to finish Quinn's unicorn quilt. I've said that all year, but I make baby steps each month.

And, I want to piece my quote quilt from last year for the rainbow scrap challenge. The letters are ready. I just need to piece the words and make a top.

2020 quilt goals

I have been thinking and thinking about next year's goals. I have spent at least two years working on ufos and I have finished more than I thought I could. But, I am wishing to do something new. I've noticed I went crazy with new, so we will see. I was trying for a top 10 for the year, and next thing I knew, I had 20. I am going to leave it that way, and see how I do. It is 2020 after all.

1. editya sitar baskets - new -I bought this in Utah after my daughter - in - law's passing.

2. double wedding ring - ufo - I think I have one maybe two more seams to do.

3. houses from swap - ufo
4. jamestown landing - ufo
5. circa 1880 - ufo
6. stella cyranna - ufo
7. portage lake - new
8. blue ridge beauty - ufo
9. 1/2 square x mas tree 2012 - ufo
10. hanging lanterns - new
11. just for fun - new
12. black sheep - new but last year's goal
13. gobble gobble - new
14. swinging checkerboard - new
15. scrappy sandwiches - new
16. fairy tale - new
17. ode to joey - ufo
18. big sky bear - new
19. impressionist - new
20. norwegian snowflakes - new
21. show off - new
22. radio waves- new

8 out of 22 are ufo

Yes, I have added two more. sigh....
I want to do more charity quilts this year and I have two new rainbow quilts, and two, that I need to do again this year.
I had 16 finishes last year and all but 3 were ufos.
341.50 yards used.
I need to severely limit fabric and scraps coming into my house. But, I don't want to do that. sigh... I can't think of a goal that I think I will keep. I have thought about saying no more scraps, but I like them more than fabric. Fabric is so expensive... but, there are some great deals that are hard to resist. How do you manage your purchasing. I have enough fabric to make quilts until I am 200. I plan to give away fabric, until I start sorting, and once I touch it, I am smitten. sigh...

sorting and sewing

With a little bit of hmmming, and hawing, and head scratching, I have put two rows of the double wedding ring quilt together. And not just any two rows. The outside row and row 2.  It looks pretty good. and it was just a question of me being very careful to double check what was next to what when I sewed.
Just because of the sheer bulk, I will join 2 rows  together first and then join 2 sets together.

Most of the week I have been sorting through my green scraps in an attempt to find some order to the scrap chaos. This was my 2 1/2 in strip bin.

This is after sorting the big pieces of strips and stacking them to order. I am not thrilled with the colors, they seem dark and grumpy.

And this is the short pieces that I decided I would just decide and cut for many of my on- going projects. It feels good to get it organized.

dwr rows

I am still working on the double wedding ring quilt. I have all the rows completed, and now, it's time to get brave and sew the rows together..... hmmm......maybe next week.

I have loved everything about making this quilt. I am truly glad I took the plunge and decided to make it. And, I do want to see it finished. I started the quilt because Jo of Jo's country junction published her version of it in magazine, and started a quilt along. That was the motivation I needed.
I love the fabrics and that all of it came from my stash. I love that the ratio of boring sewing to interesting sewing is good. I love that it was easier to make than it looked. I hope I am not counting my chickens before they hatch, but, I am excited about this quilt. I used a different template than Jo, which was bigger, and, that might be why it has been easier than I thought.

classic double wedding ring

One block at a time, I am building rows for my double wedding ring quilt. It is tricky getting the curves facing the right direction.

The outside rows require a finished curved edge. It is easiest if there are 3 melons on the center piece. But, the row goes together in an every other pattern. This is the last block for the the right bottom outside corner. Now, I have to start putting rows together. I started this with Jo of Jo's country junction quilt along. I was pleasantly surprised how much easier it is to make than it looks. There is a lot of sewing of small pieces, millions, I am sure.

double wedding ring

We have had another through the night snowfall and it is pretty looking out the window. Yesterday, I had rug hooking guild and a quilter's group get together. Two fun things in one day is pretty exciting around here.
I spent rug hooking time transferring a new snowman pattern to linen. I didn't get it finished, but I did get it squared and borders straight and nice.
At quilt group, I worked on double wedding ring and sorting through a box, that I wasn't sure just what was in there, despite the labels. I will have to do another post about the treasures I found.
I felt that it was time to revisit the double wedding ring quilt that I started last year during a quilt along at Jo's Country junction. I have several blocks ready to assemble into a row.
Actually, I have blocks in all stages of completion and need to figure out what I have done, and, what I need to still do.

In the pile to the right are the rows ( I have 2) . In the front are the blocks with 2 melons, and the back left pile has 3 melons.

templates

I am a tool person and so is my husband, so he would let me buy anything that was a tool. He is a machine repairman, and he knows that the right tool can make a huge difference. I made my first quilt with a homemade cardboard template. We have come a long way since then.

I did a quick check on the template inspired quilts I am piecing. I have taken the double wedding ring out of the box again and I have several of these parts I need to make.

I have been cutting 2 1/2 in tumbler blocks again. They are just cute.

work has stopped on oriental pinwheels

I have all the blocks ready for scrappy twinkle

and I have not decided on fabric choices for drops of jupiter.

I think I am not a template sewer, but just a quick check around my room, and I found all these quilts started or using templates. And I am sure there are more I just didn't see.
benefit - I am not interested in buying anymore templates as long as I am doing this challenge.

one monthly goal finish

This was my goals for October. It is the 31st and BOO and it is time to report just how well I did.

For my one monthly goal, I want to make my Granddaughter's unicorn quilt, and finish piecing orca bay mystery quilt, and continue working on the double wedding ring.

I have all the pieces cut and sewn to add around the unicorn quilt for my Granddaughter. I just have to do the math and put an inner border first.

I have a big stack of double wedding ring melons finished. And it is time to add them to the rows and assemble. I am still very much in love with how this coming together.

I am close to assembling the orca bay mystery quilt. I am piecing the border which includes a gazillion HSTs.

So I would say I accomplished my October goals for one monthly goal. It's time to think about November. wow

double wedding ring arcs

All the arcs are officially done for the double wedding ring. I am slowly adding them to the second side of the melons.

We finished our Grandma week of fall break with a campfire and marshmallows. I have such great memories of my children and campfires. It is fun to watch how learning takes place while roasting marshmallows. It seems a simple thing, but it is filled with decisions and choices, and experiencing consequences. And watching a sunset is always good.

wedding ring double fun

The weather has been so nice. I love an Indiana sky in the fall. It is a perfect shade of blue with just enough fluffy clouds to make it interesting. The temperature is cool enough that there is no doubt winter is coming, but warm enough to still feel hopeful there is a bit more time to be outdoors.
We grew elephant ears this year for the first time, And a bunch of weeds, and mosquitoes. We are clever that way.

I have all the A pieces of arcs made for my double wedding ring quilt- all of them. I can't believe it, there were soooo many wedges. I am not done with with the whole arc yet, I need to add the B piece and a square to each end.

We are still playing with our lala loopsies and re watching Mulan.
