fair and square to the finish

I have decided that my October one monthly goal will be fair and square, a bonnie hunter pattern. It was part of the 5 quilt projects, but, was relegated to the closet, when, I had a few customer quilts that I needed to do. I need to find a back, wait for the longarm to be empty, quilt, and bind it. I look forward to seeing this one finished.

I had this quilt on the maybe someday list until 2017, when I decided to really make it. I started the string piecing off and on until I finished the blocks in 2019.  Next, I spent some time making little 4 patches

The quilt became part of the 5 quilts project in 2022

hand me down finish

Hand me down is finished. This is an older UFo from 2018. I found this pattern in the first Bonnie Hunter book scraps and shirttails. I brought this out of the UFO closet in March of this year, and, it was a top in April. I love this quilt. It is more colorful than it appears on camera. It is made with recycled shirts and a blue from my stash. It was part of my 5 quilts project, but, was late making it to the longarm.

90 x 90 - 21 yards

I quilted it with swirls on the longarm and used scraps of shirts for the binding. I had a gray sheet for the backing. It is soft and cozy. Again, I like making shirt quilts.

This is a finish for my one monthly goal  and PHD

quilt border debate

When I finished hand me down top, to be honest, I just wanted to be done. I had worked at it with intent, and, I was losing motivation. I really thought I would skip the cool border that was in the pattern and just add a plain border. I let it steep for a few days, and, I realized part of why I started the quilt, was the border. But, 5 rows? really?

I decided to go for it. I have enough fabric, and, I tend to make bed size quilts, and, I started the quilt with the border as part of the plan. The blue stripe was yardage but the rest were shirts. I had to be creative in piecing it together. This is my one monthly goal for April and I am cutting it close.

hand me down top

I have been working on the blocks for hand me down in an effort to make rows and join rows. There was minimal matching with the every other block layout.

so fun

I finished the rows at an open sew at the library. Ooo I like it. I am not sure about borders. It is a bout 74 x 74 as it is. I think I will let it rest a bit, and see I want to finish it.

Hand me down is a Bonnie Hunter pattern found in her first book.

hand me down progress

Sew excited to see progress on my Hand me down quilt Ufo. All the blocks are made, and, I am sewing each star block to its partner. I liked the star blocks individually, but, they look so nice, as every other block. My goal for the month is to have a finished quilt.

I discovered I was 2 hourglass blocks short for the quilt. I just used a few extra flying geese for the center. Now, it will be a "made you look" quilt LOL

April one monthly goal

I opened an older ufo called hand me down  last month and have been making flying geese and star blocks. I am nearly done with the blocks. Each block is so different and fun to see, when I finish it. All of them are made from recycled shirt fabrics. I want to make finishing this as my one monthly goal for April. I cut this quilt in 2018, and made the hourglass blocks, before, adding it to the ufo closet.

ugly library carpet

April tends to get away from me, so I will need to stick to it. We have birthdays and Spring( I hope) and we love our garden. In addition, I need to cut back on my social sewing. And, that is where I get a lot done on my projects.

fun stars

It was so exciting to start making the blocks for an older Ufo called hand me down.   I didn't pay any attention to matching fabrics. I wanted to see how different combinations would work. I must confess, I didn't wait until all the flying geese were done... I just couldn't.

so fun

Back to flying geese, more still to do.

flying geese

Geese are flying here, as I make the units I need for an older Ufo called hand me down. This is top of my list to finish. But, making flying geese takes a lot of patience and time. I decided I wanted them accurate, so, I went with the deb tucker's instructions and template called wing clipper. They are much more accurate, but, I have more fun if I "fly" by the seat of my pants with rectangles and squares. haha

Still, a few every day and the number I need keeps shrinking. I look forward to making the blocks.

I am making progress. I would like to say I am seeing a dent in the shirt fabric bucket, but, I am not.

hand me down ufo project

I have started working on a new UFO ( hand me down) for my 5 quilts project. I had 2 finishes last week, and, that means it is time to choose replacement projects.

As always, when I open a box that has been in the ufo closet, I need to assess what is there, versus, my notes. My notes said everything was cut. I don't think so. And, it took, some sleuthing to figure out that I cut the flying geese pieces to use deb tuckers ruler and wing cutter. Now, where did I put that?

2018

The alternate squares and hour glass blocks are there.

I found this pattern in the first Bonnie Hunter book scraps and shirttails. I think it is out of print. I have made almost all the quilts in this book over time.

I really like working with upcycled shirts and my head is wanting to wander to other possible shirt projects.

One monthly goal for August

I didn't finish last month's One monthly goal at Elm street quilts. But, never give up - right?  I had the   last quilt a goal for 2 months and still did not finish. I will try a different Ufo that needs finishing, in hopes, I will find renewed motivation to chug along on the finishing. I need to add borders and quilt it.

in the box

This is a Bonnie Hunter pattern from her book scraps and shirttails. It is made mostly from shirt fabrics. My notes are sketchy. I think I started this in 2015 or 2016

mostly done

fair and square blocks

I knew I was going to need more projects to take for our Friday and open sews coming up in April. I decided to dig out Fair and square and see what was next for moving this project along. This has been a puzzle from the beginning

I sewed the string triangles into twosies. I joined the twosies to make blocks.

I added black frames to the blocks.

I thought I was ready to start piecing rows, but the string blocks didn't fit. Back to the instructions -
I needed to trim.

Now, I am ready to make rows.

star gazing finish

Star gazing is a Bonnie Hunter pattern in her book scraps and shirt tails. This is finish number 27 for the year for me. Many of the scraps for this quilt are upcycled shirts. I cut it out in 2014. It has been a top since 2017 after a back and forth visit to the ufo closet. It's a big quilt 82 x 82 and used 22 yards of fabric. I made mine one row bigger across.

I think what happened was, I started this quilt as a the free pattern on Bonnie's site, and, I made the number of blocks for that one which doesn't have sashings. Then her book came out, and, the same pattern had sashings, and, I couldn't decide if I wanted sashings. So, I put it aside.
I decided I would do the sashings and get it off the UFO list.

I did a free form pattern on the longarm. I used a sheet from the thrift store for the back, and black binding. I used a machine to attach the binding.

This quilt waited a long time for it's turn to be in the spotlight as a finished quilt. This will part of my phd 20 ufo project

cactus patch quilt

I have a finish, and even though I haven't found a sunny day, I took photos.  It is a queen sized quilt from a Bonnie Hunter pattern in scraps and shirttails. I blogged about it here. I made it using "made " fabric as the center squares and recycled shirts as the sashings.

I did a free motion swirl pattern all over the quilt on my long arm. Even with the wind, there is always an errant thread somewhere. haha

This is one of my goals for the 2019 finish along. My goals are listed  here.

cactus patch

Cactus patch was the first quilt I wanted to make in Bonnie Hunter's first book scraps and shirttails. I really liked the half blocks and how the half square triangles are a little wonky. The centers for each block are crumb blocks, and the colors were bright.
I already had a growing pile of crumb blocks, and, was excited for the idea on how to use them. I worked on it, off and on, for awhile, and then, it disappeared into the ufo void. The ufo void must be a fascinating place.

I have wanted to finish it many times, and there was something else more pressing, or it would get lost. I found it this time when I found a bundle of fabric I didn't remember. I had bundled potential backing pieces with it, and it had gotten folded with the pieces on the outside and the top wrapped on the inside. goofy.
This was the month I decided to make it a one monthly goal. As soon as I make the binding, it is ready for the longarm. I still have a few days to get this finished.

The cornerstones were also a crumb block.

There were 3 borders.

Bonnie says it was inspired by this antique quilt from the early 1900s. The bold colors are definitely hers.

I haven't seen very many of these out in the quilter universe. I don't know why. I think it is a great stash buster and has a great impact. I like working with shirts, they have such a nice feel to the fabric.

bargain basement

I have a finish - bargain basement from the book scraps and shirttails.

It was cold and windy, but most of the snow was gone, so we opted for an outside shot.

I have decided this will be for my Grandson Matthew. It has his Grandpa's shirts in it, and, oddly enough, there was a scrap leftover block from His Dad's eagle quilt over 20 years ago. It's the little gold friendship star lower left side. I guess I don't get rid of anything.

I think the border really adds to the quilt and frames it nicely.

bargain basement

Oh my! We have -17 degrees in Indiana today with a strong wind. I don't think we are going anywhere. Good day for quilting, and hot chocolate.

The last time I blogged about Bargain basement, I had gotten this far. I still had not decided on borders. I blogged about it here in June of 2017. I had added borders eventually, but I don't have a record of that.
One morning last week, I was waking and wondering what to do for a project that day. And, even though I have a gazillion in process projects, I thought of this quilt waiting to be quilted, and was excited enough to put it on the longarm. I think I was just tired of all the other projects and needed an almost quick finish.

I am just free motion quilting all over big swirls in red thread. It is all shirts and from the Bonnie Hunter book scraps and shirttails. I liked the pattern. Basically, if you have any 3.5 inch squares from other projects, they can combine with the 3.5 rectangles. And it makes it interesting. There were pinwheels and 4 patches and hourglasses, oh my.
