uncle sam's hat

I have a Friday finish that I am super happy to show. This is a large rug -24 in x 51 in. The colors are a little brighter outdoors than they really are in the living room. I am grateful that most of the wool in this rug has come from recycled wool, and I hand dyed a few pieces. I added velvet to the flag and that is lovely up close. I like a scrappy rug just like I like scrappy quilts too.

It's a Polly Minnick pattern called Uncle Sam's hat. I started it in January of this year.
I found a few glitter blocks that I still needed to assemble and they are done. I think that is all the blocks I need to start assembling this quilt.

time to finish a rug

My uncle sam's hat rug has reached the finishing stage. All the hooking is done, and I am really excited about finishing this rug. It is bigger than most of my rugs, but, it seemed to go very quickly. I didn't buy any wool for this rug, I was able to use what I already had on hand. The blues were a scrappy mix of dark blues.

I dyed the yarn for whipping the edges my self. I ordered 2 colors of blue dye because I wasn't sure which one I would want and I used them both. I used bright blue and navy. I wanted to get several variations in the color. Looking at the picture, they seem to be completely different, but they are much the same. I really don't like whipping the edges with yarn, but I think the colors will make it more fun.

and look what is on the longarm - Hippie baby is getting a turn.

Happy May day!

Stash report April 22, 2018

It was an exceptionally rewarding day at goodwill this week for fabric. It has been a long time since I have found anything remotely worth the trip. It was fun, but, it won't look good on my numbers for stash report. There was 6 yards of the top oldie but goodie fabric, 5 yards of the blue and 3 1/2 of shirting plaid.

There was 2 yards of homespun and, of course, Christmas. Altogether, there was 29 1/2 yards. I spent $15.00.

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week 1 1/2 yards
Fabric Used year to Date: 211 1/4 yards

Fabric Added this Week: 29 1/2 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 70 3/4 yards

Net Fabric for 2018: 140 1/2 yards used more than purchased.

I sewed at least 15 min 7 days this week. Yay, a few new projects.

The first set of border is done on Uncle Sam's hat, and I will sit and stitch on that this Sunday. I am looking forward to adding navy to the border.

There are a few more stars to the collection.

Stash report April 15, 2018

I was gifted a magic bundle of scraps. I have kept them near my cutting table waiting for inspiration to strike. But, as I was cleaning, I rediscovered them, and decided it was time to just do something, even if it was just throw them into the string bucket. There were pieces already sewn together, mostly 1 1/2 inch strips. The fabrics were so cute, I just knew there had to be a good use for them.

They were not all the same size at all. I thought about just cutting them into 4 patches and 9 patches, but, there would be so many, but not enough for any one scrappy project. Then it hit me. I needed to work on Birch trees, and these would be great sewn together for the strips. It would not be a big waste in time or function. And I would be moving a project I already have, forward. Score!

I sewed at least 15 min 7 days this week. I finally found my cutting table.

finding the table

I have turned a corner on my Uncle Sam's Hat rug and started experimenting with the border.

I try to make at least one of these friendship stars each morning.

And I went from this mess

to this.

Now, if someone would just carry off the little piles and what nots that have accumulated on the cutting/storing table, I would be a happy girl. I still have a ways to go, but at least I can see lines. Which is your favorite size of rotary cutter? I had lost 3 of them in the chaos. I use both sizes.

stash report April 8, 2018

An independent quilt store in my area officially closed their doors the end of February, but they emailed customers and offered a 2 day sale of nearly 70% off. I resisted through Monday without going, but I really wanted to go, and my husband said we could make a fun day of the trip. The weather was awful, drenching blowing rain. We were crazy.

I chose my fabric and stood in line and waited and waited. Just before my turn another clerk came and offered to help cut another customers fabric. hmmmmm. And then, as I was up at the table, the clerk noticed another customer behind me with fewer bolts and said she would take her ahead of me since she only had three bolts. hmmm no. I had waited, and I might have noticed her lack of bolts and offered her to go ahead of me, myself, but that should have been my call...... so I left. I didn't make a purchase. I don't have to add anything to my stash report or find a place to sort it into. And I really should be careful financially with our situation. So, I was saved from myself. but still a little bit cranky.

These were pity purchases at Joann on the way home.

road block

With my hubby home all the time, I have to find a new normal. We are getting to some of those things that have been bothering us for so long done. That is very good. But, I am not finding the time to really sew like I am used to yet. And then this happens to my cutting table ...

Oh my.
I am still trying to cut for 2 more Christmas quilts. I have rainbow scrap challenge blocks I need to keep going. and I am rug hooking. And every day I am making little friendship blocks for a swap.

I have come to an edge which is always a good sign of progress.
I am quilting this fun quilt for a customer. This is the quilt that started the whole swap thing. It is so fun to recognize scraps and fabrics.

Stash report April 2, 2018

Instead of the Easter Bunny, we were visited by the snow fairy. It is so beautiful. Especially, since it will not last. Spring will have it's day.
We have had a little time with our two Granddaughters.Which has left me with little time to sew. But, I don't mind.

It is time to reassess goals for the coming month for One monthly Goal. Typically, I lose time in April. There is so much going on around here, birthdays and gardening plans and the need to Spring clean. So I don't want to make goals that are too lofty and won't get done. Still, the one monthly goal has really been the motivation I have needed to get things done and enjoy the process of focusing and accomplishing something that is important to me.

I plan on getting the mystery quilt Carolina Crossroads finished. I am ready to make a back and quilt it. Surely I can get that done.

I have a Christmas quilt that I pieced with a friend. Hers is done ( I did the quilting) and she wants both of us to enter them in our quilt show this year in October. I need to make the back and quilt mine. Funny how I can get others quilts done but not my own... ok, not so funny.

I want to get back to snow days and see if I can get the top together.

Sunday, during general conference, I worked a bit on my rug hooking. I love  how it is looking.

I did get the green blocks cut for squared away qal at rainbow scrap challenge, but I didn't get them made into blocks and I didn't get them posted.

April's color is yellow/gold, perfect for Spring. Oh, wait, all colors are perfect for Spring!

Stash report March 25, 2018

A visit to goodwill and I came home with some treasures. I found 2 wool skirts for rug hooking.  The light color I can easily dye any color I want or need for a prroject.

I found some shirting, but really chuckled over a packaged quilt backing. Do you remember paragon? They were the go to place and name for women's crafts. Apparently, that included packaged quilt backings.

This week, I included pictures of sorting through my Christmas stash. One comment from Ruth caught my eye. She mentioned having a panel that goes with one of my fabrics. I knew she needed it and might actually use it more than I, so I sent it off to her.  I feel lighter already.

Here is an update on my rug hooking project that I will work on in my slow sunday time. I started adding the background to make sure I would like it. I do like it and it is now good to go.

Stash report March 18, 2018

I will be working on my rug hooking project today after church. I have dyed the green, since, I couldn't find a green I liked in my stash. I want to add a little of the background to see if I like the colors with that. I also like to give myself a little time on Sundays to spin some yarn.

Stash report February 10, 2018

I made a few more string units for birch trees on string Saturday.

I spun more natural dorset fleece for spinning Sunday

and yesterday I quilted a customer quilt.

and spread out a new mess looking for a navy background for my rug hooking project- Uncle Sam's hat. And, before I knew it, I had decided to sort and measure all the blue wool. It was so much fun petting the wool and thinking of all the projects I want to make, but, sorting wasn't even on the to do list anywhere. Now I have to add 'put it all away' on the to do list.

And I am late with last week's stash report
