Our guild had an open sew, last week end, and, I was able to make the piano key borders and finish the dresden blocks  top. I have wanted to make this classic quilt block since I started quilting in the late 70s. I was enamored with the fabrics in the 80s. I gathered what I thought would be enough of the pink as I could, after my daughter was born. The first blocks were made with a piece of cardboard and cut out with scissors. We have it so much easier, now. My daughter was my third child with two rowdy brothers. I was definitely out numbered and I didn't get very far. But, it was meant to be a baby quilt for her. If someone had not invented the dresden template, I would have probably thrown it away by now. Even with a template, I was pretty busy, still, it was in the back of my mind. It is a blessing to think of my wonderful daughter, as I am making it.

I didn't have much room on the floor to truly get it stretched out flat. All the quilters at the  open sew, could point to some of the fabrics and reminisced about their projects from that time.

 Once all the medallions for my dresden blocks were hand sewn, I could begin to make rows. I did decide to make sashings. I did use my time at our guild's open sew to get this far. I think I want to make a piano key border. This was my daughter's baby quilt from 1986. After 2 sons, I wanted all the pink I could get. But, she definitely didn't like pink. sigh  I revived my interest last year during the rainbow scrap challenge.

the last of the Dresden blocks

 I have finished all the dresden blocks I need, to finish the quilt. I plan on adding this to the UFO list for 2025. If I don't finish this year, it will be on the list each year until it is finished. It has been very patient since 1987. It began as my only daughter's baby quilt. When she was old enough to decide, pink is not her color. haha.

I pulled this older UFO out of the closet in January as part of the rainbow scrap challenge when pink was the color of the month. I only planned to work on it through January, but, I was so close to getting the blocks done, I decided to keep sewing. And, now, the blocks are finished  Such an adventure.

I have been slowly sewing blades and then rings for my dresden quilt. When I restarted it in January as part of the rainbow scrap challenge, I decided I needed 8 more rings for the quilt. I only have 2 more left to do. Then, I will add it to the 5 quilt list for 2025, so that it is not forgotten again.

I have had a chance to make more dresden  rings. I tend to sew a bunch of blades, turn and press them and then sew the rings. After I make a couple, I run out of variety and repeat. I need 5 more to reach my goal.

 I dug into my 1 1/2 inch strip bin for pink. This year I am sewing the color with a light, in strips. I cut them at 2 1/2 inches and have a zig zag  idea in my head. I am planning  to use 3 strips each month and see how far that gets me at years end. I was hoping to make 36 segments and I made 59.

My sewing time has been limited, but, I have sewn a bunch of dresden  blades while I am sewing squared away. I was hoping for more of them.

I was planning to put this project away at the end of the month, but, I want to make some more progress. I think I will leave the blades out, and make a few every time I sit down to sew. I have added it to  the bottom of the list of my 5 quilt project for the year, and see if I can get closer to a finish. If I do that every color for the rainbow scrap challenge,  I will have added 12 more quilts to the year.  LOL

Pink is the color for January 2025 and the rainbow scrap challenge.  

I have my pink dresdens with me in Florida. I added 80s fabrics to my project in 2018. I took the time to sort the fabric in the bucket and narrow my choices, as I work to make progress on this old ufo for the rainbow scrap challenge. I cut strips from all the fabrics.

I reopened the zipper ufo box and pulled all the blocks with pink. I want to add different color blocks to them as we move through the year. I made the zipper blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge in 2022.

Pink is the color for January 2025 and the rainbow scrap challenge.  

I began this dresden plate quilt in 1987 after my daughter was born. After 2 boys, I wanted to see pink again.  It was set aside for many years until a redo in 2020. I brought it out to work on it during the rainbow scrap challenge as a leader/ ender, and, I made a few rings that year. This year, I am once again adding it to the rainbow scrap challenge during the pink month. When I opened the box I found 12 rings together.  I had decided that I had all the rings made in 2020.  This time, I decided I would want to make 20 blocks.

I did choose the background for the blocks from my stash, which is one decision closer to a finish.

 I cut this year's windmill blocks.  using a light gray background.

I found 5 sugar grove block kits with pink in them to sew this month. My rsc goal for 2023

Last Saturday, we lost power during a short thunderstorm. When we lose power, we also lose water and flush toilets. I didn't get a chance to post the last of my pink projects for the rainbow scrap challenge. And, I didn't get a chance to visit other blogs for my weekly inspiration. I really missed that.
I make the wonky stars from 2 inch scraps and leftover triangle pieces.

My final count for the pink dresdens is 12. That is a lot of progress for this old UFO. I didn't want to start anything new, so I just used them as leader/enders. The next time I pull this project out of the closet, it will be ready to applique.

The rainbow scrap challenge for June is pink. I have a dresden plate in pink that I have included this month, along with the projects I try to do each month in the rainbow color.
I made one block for shine using 2 1/2 inch strips.

I made 10 blocks for country roads using  1 1/2 inch strips. I really like these blocks.

We have had a wonderful week of summer weather, sunshine, and not too hot. The garden has been happy, and so has hubby who really likes to be outside. He is still off work for his back surgery recovery. He sees the doctor next week, and He is entertaining the idea of retiring, and, then,  everything could change.

Oh, and I have these done, using the pieces as leader/enders for my other projects. I can't believe how many I get done without planning to get done. I may even get all the blocks I need this month.

I thought the best next step for the dresden quilt would be to cut this bag of dresdens I bought at a quilt show. If I was going to use them at all, I would want to start adding the fabrics at the first to make the variety look more consistent. There were both blue and pink in the bag, but I was only interested in the pink.

The  first template I used for this quilt was cardboard in the 80s. When I dug the project out again there was a great new template that I used. And this new template was the right size for the bagged dresdens. There are pencil lines on the back of these pieces, so, the original quilter had used a cardboard template as well.

I needed to tweak the angle a little.

I enjoyed cutting them so much, I even cut the blue ones.

I like the peaked dresdens best, especially with it being easier to sew by machine than a curve. I sewed all the tops on the treadle.

And, the pile grew.

I am using this quilt as a leader/ ender for the month of June and the rainbow scrap challenge.

Last week, I had a decision to make about adding a another project to my rainbow scrap challenge plans, an old ufo with pink dresdens.
I was worried I wouldn't keep all the plates in the air.
I was grateful for bloggie support and decided to do both, but, with a better mind set.

I spent only one evening sorting the scrap bucket and cutting what I would normally need. Then, I put it all away for another time. It looks neat and tidy.... for a minute.

I cut strips in 3 1/2, 2 1/2, 2, and 1 1/2. I have an accuquilt, but, I like to cut with a creative grids stripology ruler, when I am cutting multiple sizes from a single piece of fabric.

It wasn't as much as I planned to do, but, it was good enough. So that, then, I could work on the pink dresden for the month. Instead of working to finish it, I am using the dresdens as leader and enders while working on my quilt projects I want to finish. I will see how far that gets me. Any progress will be progress, and I can think about my sweet baby girl, every day.

This was how far I got the first three days. Not bad for an after thought.

My oldest ufo is from 1987. My only daughter was born after 2 boys ( and there would be 2 more boys) And I was ready to celebrate pink.  I saw a picture in a magazine ( I wonder where it is hiding), and, I cut pieces with a cardboard template. It was so pretty and feminine looking. But, a third baby leaves you one hand too few. And, it has barely seen the light of day.  I can't find when, but I found a dresden template awhile ago. I cut several, enough to fill a gallon zip lock bag.

I bought a dresden package at a guild show, and knew I could turn them into the same dresden I was using.

And when I see 80s pink fabric at thrift stores, I buy it, because I know it will go with this quilt's colors.
The rainbow scrap challenge for June is pink. Not many of my projects actually need pink, so I looked through my ufos and remembered Katie's quilt. hmmm
I could either sort and cut my scrap drawer of pink, or, I could use the month to work on the dresden. I don't think I could do both. I want to keep going on the other quilts I have in progress. What to do.

My friend Linda and I were discussing the closing of our local quilt shop (3 years ago already) and we realized that we both had a quilt kit in common that neither of us had started. We both had bought the same kit before we had even started sewing together. We picked a Friday and began the cutting together. I doubt very much that I would have gotten this cut out and ready to go with out the support of doing it together. Quilting friends are the best. Quilters are the best.

The pattern was a bit hard to follow. It was the kind that lists fabric by letter, and we had to keep referring to a chart to know which fabric was which. I think we did it. I hadn't brought any paper or labels so I had to improvise with paper towels from the restroom. lol
