floating stars finish

We had a Spring surprise this week...snow and 3-4 inches. It was so pretty. There were big fluffy flakes falling against a blue sky. And it accumulated through the night. Snow in April is much more fun than snow in January. We know it just won't last, and, we can just enjoy it.

I have a finish. The floating stars quilt is finished. It seemed to take forever to just add border and quilt and bind. Now that it is done, I think it will be a gift for a new Grandson coming in May.

finish the top of floating stars. This is my one monthly goal for April.

It finishes at 42 x 54 and uses 6 1/2 yards of fabric. I started this quilt at a workshop with the crafty old broads from Fort Wayne Indiana in 2017. I didn't finish it back then, because, I couldn't decide about a border. Now, I just want it done. I had enough of the blue in the box for a border and binding. I can share this as part of PHD 2021 at quilting gail. It was also part of the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy for this year and the color of blue for April.

floating stars top

I added the same blue as the setting triangles to finish the top of floating stars. This is my one monthly goal for April. It needs backing, and, binding, and, a turn on the longarm. Hopefully, this will be another ufo done this month. I am sneaking it in between other people's quilts. If I didn't, I would never have finishes.

I am trying to make 2 easy breezy blocks each morning. It's easier after I cut a lot of squares from scraps. I cut a stack of the background pieces as well. I will work through them until, I can't make sets any more and then, go back to piecing.

A new Goal

It is a new month and I want to set new goals for the one monthly goal at elm street quilts

The color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy is blue. As the UFo I want to finish, I have chosen floating stars. I think it just needs borders and quilted. I started this quilt with a class in March of 2017.   Most of the blocks were made then. And the top was was made by July 2017. I think I stopped because there was a border decision to be made, and I wasn't thrilled with my version of the quilt. But, it deserves a finish. And, after time has passed, I really like it.

I am adding one more row to last month's one monthly goal to make a top ready to be quilted.

show and tell

Our guild speaker was Lisa Dobson from Martinsville Indiana. She is an art quilter. My favorite was this quilt called the Girl of the limberlost. This was one of my favorite books as a child written by an Indiana author Gene Stratton Porter.

She dyes her own fabric.

here are some quilts from the shop hop

I haven't finished my rainbow scrap challenge quilt - floating stars, but it is trimmed and ready for a border decision.
I have been adding borders to this quilt. Do Bonnie fans know which one it is?

diamonds

My goal for the rainbow scrap challenge this month was to get this quilt to the flimsy stage. I spent my time at small group getting it this far. I need to trim it up and decide on borders. The pattern is a crafty ol' broad pattern called Oh my stars. I think I have been calling it floating stars
I used a very soft blue for the quilt. I took a class with them through our quilt guild.

This is my friend's Linda O's farmer's wife and it is spectacular. She just got it back from her longarmer.

On Saturdays, I am trying to include string piecing into my day with my treadle sewing machine.
I have been working on 45 degree diamond string blocks. I blogged about cutting the papers here and covering the papers here

I've made progress.
I have enough done that I can start to think of creating a quilt with them. But it will have to wait it's turn.

If you are working on a string project, send me a link, I would love to see.

design wall cleaning

It is time to get wild and goosey on the design wall, so I have been trying to get them emptied the proper way by finishing what is there. But I need to just clean them off today and start wild and goosey or, I won't have a chance to get it done by the end of the month.
The Bonnie Hunter leader/ ender challenge has one more green side to add then on to blue.

Floating stars from Crafty old broads has several sections together and some setting triangles.

I was afraid all the columbine died last year, but they are doing well this year. I planted pink ones and now I have burgundy. How did they do that?

Happy Saturday

We had some visitors. Poor things, the pool isn't open yet. It was a blustery day, probably the leftovers of bad weather down south. The pool cover wanted to fly off but not the ducks. LOL
Just a bit of birthday cake with a really wonderful frosting.
I had read somewhere that to make a box cake taste like it came from the bakery. I needed to add an additional egg, substitute milk for the water, and replace the oil with melted butter double the amount. I was afraid to do the whole butter thing, cholesterol and all, but I did the rest, and it made a wonderful box cake taste spectacular. The icing was a whip cream cheese frosting found here. This was a very successful frosting and a big favorite for the birthday boy.
Still arranging floating stars on the design wall
And I have decided on borders for the pink sampler quilt. This will be my first RSC 17 challenge for the month since it is multi colored. Ok, I am stretching the rules but.... I want this done.
Today will be a much needed day on the longarm so it will be ready for the pink quilt soon.
Happy Saturday.

Kitchen adventures

I have had a muse in the kitchen of all places. I didn't think I liked the kitchen much, but after the children have left, and I can do what I want, when I want, as slow as I want, I am actually liking it. I decided to make homemade ravioli for the first time. I used the kitchenaid to mix the dough, and pasta roller to roll the dough. I found a great cheese filling recipe. It was fun and really delicious. I didn't get pictures making it, but here is one of the batch I made for the freezer. Homemade is so much better than store bought.

I used this website for how to and confidence
And  this recipe for dough and cheese.

While I had the dough making stuff out, I made noodles for my son's birthday coming soon. He usually requests homemade chicken and noodles and real potatoes. I used the same dough recipe as the ravioli which is  a little different. We will see if He notices a difference.
I  am teaching the church ladies at Relief Society how to can butter for food storage. So I needed to test it first. I am very happy with the results and it was very easy. Here are the directions.

It came out very creamy and spreadable. It has a shelf life of three years.
I have small quilt group tonight and have started oatmeal honey bread in the bread machine. very yummy.
With 3 April birthdays, I will be making a few cakes this month too.
 not much quilting...

Floating stars

I just had a wonderful time taking these 5 fun Grandchildren to see Beauty and the Beast. We met up with them in Martinsville Indiana. I have missed them.
The movie was nice, but, I can't believe I am saying this, I like the animated version better - classic disney. The animated Belle was a better actress.

I have all the stars made for the floating stars quilt, and have started putting them on the design wall.
I have to add these 8 more
and these 9 more - these are the cutest 3 inch stars.
just for fun, I tried a pattern for little bunnies, by Salina Kyle
I had never made anything that made a pouch before on just one needle. The designer included catnip in the stuffing for cats, but I don't have a cat. The pattern is a ravelry pattern called Catnip Bunny.

One monthly goal finish

Fancy Forest is all done. Hook line and sinker. I love it. This finishes my March One Monthly Goal. I am 3 months for 3 at finishing. And Ufo 2017 at Patchwork Times

I attended a workshop taught by the Crafty old broads from Fort Wayne Indiana. I really enjoyed their work. The quilt we were making was called Floating Stars.

Most of the other workshop attendees were using batiks, I have a small collection, and I am not comfortable using them yet.
I decided to do yellow and blue with a white background.
When I arrived, I had forgotten my yellow scraps. My husband was kind enough to bring my yellow scrap drawer to me in a bag. It saved the day.

I cut several blues for stars

And I fussy cut for a strip of 3 stars

Fun class.
