hole in my scraps

I am barely finishing these hole in the barn blocks for the month of August and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

I think I have nearly all of them that I need for the quilt.

I have a few zipper blocks ready to go. I just don't have many orange scraps. I like orange in quilts, but it isn't an often used color.

candy

I have orange cream candy ready for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. They look yummy. I think I am nearly done with these blocks. I still need a bit of licorice and chocolate. I have certainly enjoyed making these this year, and I had PLENTY of strings I needed to use. I am looking for a string project for next year or maybe 100.

This tiny little squash plant taking over the garden was a volunteer from outside the garden, and we weren't sure what the frankensquash would be. It looks to be a regular zucchini. We lost most of our zucchini to vine borers so it was a welcome visitor.

snails pace

I added 2 rounds to these 6 snail trail blocks. All I have to do is open the drawer, and I want to sew more. They are so lovely to work on, and turn out so nice. I may have to stick this project in a box and send it to the UFO closet, if, I want to finish up other projects.... but, what will I do for fun?

round 2

round 2

Orange juice was on sale last week, so I canned a few pints. We don't drink it much, but there are recipes that call for a little bit of orange juice for flavor, and, I typically have to buy it in advance and fuss with leftovers.

purple blossoms

This week I have been working on blossom time in purple for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I had pieces already to sew from the first time I worked on them in 2020. I have 7 done and need 5 more in purple.

I found this planter at aldis. It is like the green stalk everyone is talking about on gardening channels, But, much cheaper. I have planted fall crops in here. Carrots, radishes, green beans, sage. We will see if this works or becomes a chore to keep watered. At least it isn't taking up space in the garden.

tiger, tiger finish

At the very last minute, I have finished my one monthly goal for June. So glad to have a finish. I plan to donate this to a local shelter for hands to help.

My friend Linda brought a scrap bag to me.... I had found the tiger embroidery at a thrift store...I decided whatever I pulled out of the scrap bag, I would add to the quilt improv style. It has been fun. Some colors, I would not have put together on purpose. But, I like them together here. I think I saw a video on you tube by Beth Shibley from love laugh quilt that made a quilt this way.  I started this in 2020. It didn't take long to make the top. But, my 'to be quilted" list is very long.

the sun was funny for this shot

It is 40 x 45 and used 6 yards

I quilted an easy large stipple so that it would be soft. I used leftover pieces from the scrap bag for the binding.

I am still digging out the freezer. I canned some hamburger and stew meat in onion for gravy. I can open this for a quick meal when we are too tired to cook. I still have some chicken I want to can and get out of the freezer.

hole in the barn

I really like making these blocks and see another quilt in my future. I am making this as part of the  rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. This month is blue. I am never at a loss for blue scraps. They multiply while I am asleep. I also do not have a shortage of strings and crumbs, so, a perfect combination.

I made bone broth and decided to can it rather than freeze it. To finish the canner load I canned navy beans, too. We opened a recently canned ham and bean quart to test it. It was delicious, but, not enough for everybody. I will have to plan to open two jars for a meal.

pretty blossoms

I started to plan the blossom time blocks in blue, then, I realized that the leftovers from my maple leaves quilt I am assembling, will be perfect for the blossom time blocks. I didn't need to cut anything for June blossoms. Now, I need to make a few more 4 patches to keep going with these. I have 80 + blocks. My goal is 128.

I am trying to clean out the freezer to make room for the upcoming harvest this year. I found some stew meat I could can and free up a little space. Now, I have easy beef for an easy dinner. At this stage of our life, I need to find easy ways to fix dinner. We are both tired at the end of the day and don't want to mess with cooking.

follow the trail

I thought I was fully loaded on my parts for the snails trail block. I needed some recreational sewing, so I started another round of blocks. I went until I ran out of 1 1/2 inch squares for the center. And, then, I ran out. hmmmm.

I made it this far and discovered another unsorted set of  pieces. I wish I would quilt hiding things from myself. sigh...But, this is a start and so much fun. I like when I play with recycled shirts.

My favorite clematis is about to burst into color. We have had this for more than 20 years and it still makes me smile. It is next to our blackberry bush.

There was a good sale on grapes at the grocery so I bought some to can. I think I had 14 pints. I made a light syrup and water bath canned them. yum. I am in a nesting mode.

blue candy blocks

I did get the blue candy blocks finished this week for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. This time, I had many more choices of scraps to build these blocks. I have more blue and red scraps than any other color. I was able to go to my Friday group and I did make some progress. It was good to sew again. I think I am ready to tackle blue this month.

I have been canning butter as ghee. While I was at goodwill, trying to dig up some pint canning jars, I started talking to another women and she was telling me she had 100 pounds of butter canned. I felt inadequate. My goal was 12 pounds.

star and crown blocks

I started the green blocks for star and crown a little late this month for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I only have 4 of them done, but, the other 4 are cut and ready to go. I need to dig out some background scraps. I am running low on those fabrics.

I did 2 zipper blocks as leader/enders. I need to cut some solids. Finding scraps in print fabric isn't hard, but solids are not something I use very often. I have been through the 2 inch drawers and have pulled as many as I could find. It is time to actually cut, actual fabric.

Carrots were 97 cents a bag at Kroger this week so I bought, and canned. I used pints now that we are mostly just the two of us.

Our supply of peanut butter was Jiff and was part of the recall, and we had eaten some of it. The interesting thing I discovered, was the best buy date was May 12 2022. And I bought it at sam's club a month ago. I am guessing it sat at the port on a container ship for awhile. So check new food you buy for dates.

hunter's star spring

Earlier, I blogged about starting these this month here, I have spent a little time finishing the green  hunter's star blocks. I try to do 20 each month in the color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I had to recut some background ( white) to finish the dark point pieces.

And the white point pieces.

I experimented with a few blocks. I am still missing some color groups to really start piecing the big blocks. I need blues, oranges, and maybe purples.

I really look forward to the poppies blooming each year. And, they did not disappoint. They came with the house, and were such a lovely surprise our first Spring 35 years ago. The dame's rocket is another favorite. They bloom wherever they want to each year. And, I don't have the heart to kill them when they go rogue. They smell so good and look so pretty.

hunters star in green

Next, for my rainbow scrap challenge projects, is my Hunter's star blocks. This month the color is sage green and forest green. My other blocks are brighter than that, so, I found scraps that were as close as I thought I could go. I use the accuquilt dies to cut the pieces. All the pieces are on one die. I can put a large enough piece on the die in the print and the background and have all the pieces cut that I need for a set of blocks.

I had never tried this classic block because it looked complicated. And when I tried sewing, I realized why. Have you ever sewn pieces like this? haha - they look like spaceships. The accuracy of the pieces are great.

Pressed they look a little more like useable quilt pieces.

I still need to make the reverse pieces, but, that is for another time.

Kroger had a sale on pork roast. I canned pulled pork last week. It may not look pretty, but, it will be yummy when we need a quick meal. It will be shelf stable for a year or more.

pink blossoms

I cut for my pink projects and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

go fish 2 1/2, waffle stamp 1 1/2, easy breezy 1 1/2

I had enough blossom time strips already cut to make all the pink I would need, from when I started this quilt a few years ago. I did need to cut the HSTS and make more stems and leaves. And, now, I am out of any premade 4 patches for the corners going forward. Rhododendron trail mystery quilt had seriously decimated my pink scraps, so, it is a good thing I had these already in the box.

I canned 9 pints of ham chunks this week. The ham was a good sale price and my freezer is full.  I haven't done ham before and I was surprised how dark the water became after pressure canning.  I am already looking forward to ham and beans next winter.

rsc letters

My hubby made pickled green tomatoes with some masterful coaching from me. I have always felt bad about the tomatoes at the end of the season, that we don't get harvested. If these are yummy, we may have found the answer. I want to try a green tomato salsa as well. We still have more than enough red tomatoes to eat and maybe still can for the winter.

I have met a bit with my quilting friends, and since I still can't take my machine with back limitations, I used the time to cut some more letters for my quote quilt. After I finished the quote letters, I used the same scraps to cut a few tiny Tuesday pieces. I forgot to bring labels so they are the ones with a purple napkin piece.

This is the book I am using. I really like how these letters are made.

With some of the letters, I had to leave them in the book to  know what they are.
