scrap star

One of my quilts for the rainbow scrap challenge was the scraptastic star. I started it in march of 2019

It seems like I have been waiting for most of the year for the color yellow to finish the last block for scraptastic star. I had all the other colors done for awhile. that makes 12 blocks

I am still catching up with the country roads blocks, using colors that are interesting that I haven't used in past months.

I did a little black Friday shopping at Joann fabrics. I bought a few flannel pieces big enough to use as backings. The doorbuster price was 70% off.  That made it 2.39 a yard. I remember buying flannel at Joann for black Friday at 1.24 per yard. That has to have been almost  15 -20 years ago. If you think about it, the price has only gone  up a dollar a yard  in 20 years.  Not so with quilting cotton. This time, I ordered some on line, and picked it up at curbside. I also went early to see what was available.

blue blocks

This is the last Saturday in April for the rainbow scrap challenge. I need to make sure all my projects have their blue on. This is the shine block.

And this is the scraptastic star quilt. I may have enough blocks to assemble the quilt, if, I like the colors that I have together.

This is the row x row quilt. This quilt calls for 2 of every color and row. This year I have only been making one row of each color and style. I haven't decided if I will make up rows on colors that are not in the quilt or just wait until next year. And, I think that is everything for the month.

orange star

I forgot about scraptastic stars for February. So, I have an orange to share for the last Saturday of February for the rainbow scrap challenge. I had cut the pieces, but, forgot to make the block until I thought about the link up today.

I played with bitty pumpkins in orange using 3 1/2 inch orange squares just for fun.

I am ready for another color,

stars and one monthly goal

My 2 1/2 inch square bin in green has been depleted. yay. I was left with  just a bit of olive green or lighter green. I decided I would cut more squares in the olive green category for last month's rainbow challenge scraptastic stars. I completely forgot this block for my rainbow scrap quilts.

I used that as an excuse to dig out another green scrap bucket and sort and cut. I think there is only one more green bucket left hiding somewhere.

And on to orange for February. I don't have any extra scrap buckets with orange. I only have my working basket with orange. Apparently, I don't buy much orange. I don't think it comes up at thrift stores very often.

My February one monthly goal x5

1. cut editya sitar flower box kit
2. quilt woven checkerboard
3. quilt sand castles
4 keep current with rainbow scrap challenge
5. frolic 9

rainbow challenge goals

Last year I made the 4 patches for an Irish chain quilt. This year, I will make the chaining pieces as part of my rainbow challenge quilt.

I have a new quilt I want to start called shine. photo from pinterest. It's a moda bakeshop free pattern.

I have 7 scraptastic stars which doesn't make a quilt, yet.

And a new row by row pattern. And, January, we are starting with green and the hardest row.

And I want to work at putting my quote quilt together
and who knows

fantastic star

In an effort to catch up a back log of rainbow sewing, I have made a purple scraptastic star. I really like making these. I have 2 1/2 inch squares in little boxes and they are generally one of a kind. I don't usually cut squares unless that is the last possible cut I can get from them. I prefer to keep strips and cut squares if I need them.

A friend at a recent sew in had started making these trolls for Christmas presents. I think they are very cute.
I tried to talk her into doing a workshop with these.

pink star

Great news, my hubby took me to Joann yesterday. I am 5 weeks out from surgery, so I haven't been in some time. I didn't make it all the way through a shopping visit, but I got my feet wet. They had an extra 30% off their fabric clearance, and another 10% if I finish the bolt. I picked 2, and then, hubby told them all of it, and stood in line to pay while I went and sat in the car. It was so fun. And ice cream afterwards, too.
I am still a little behind in sewing my projects for the rainbow scrap challenge. The pink is from July and the color for August is bright blue.

And, finally, all 100 garden party blocks have been sewn. It's time to sew the chaining blocks that will be the alternate blocks. I am doing them in black and white.

blue scraps

I was in the left lane, and I noticed the car up ahead was in the right lane at a dead stop. I wondered what was wrong. Fortunately, I slowed to be sure everything was all right. Then I realized we were waiting on a new family of ducks. Oh, they were so cute and so very tiny. I wish our world took better care of our small and vulnerable things.

I have blue woven checkerboard blocks made for the rainbow scrap challenge.

And a blue scraptastic star is finished.

I was in the mood to sort through my batik bucket. And blue was right on top. I am trying to fold and mark the fabric. I didn't think I had very many batiks, but, I was surprised when I took the time to get it all sorted. I will need to use it in a new project. Oh, shucks.

stars

Whenever I am tidying scraps ( almost all the time), If I find a floral that I can get a block or two for Florabunda,  I cut it into a 3 1/2 inch strip for the triangles and 2 inch strips for the 4 patches.

I used all my aqua 2 1/2 inch squares, and even cut a few, to have enough to make the scraptastic star. I am not sure all of the colors I have made will play well together in a finished quilt but I am enjoying this block.
Most of it can be leader/ ender for itself while chain sewing. If I think enough ahead, I can keep different parts going while I am sewing sections together.  Toward the end, I made 3 -4 patches as leader ender.

I had quilt guild last night. It is estimated that 80% of our members aren't quilters. hmmm why? And of the 20% of the quilters, I am a different duck as a scrap quilter, who likes lots of pieces, and bed size quilts.

stars

I had some time this weekend, while watching general conference, holding my sweet new Grandson.

I enjoyed making the green scraptastic star so much, I decided to see if I had enough red and yellow 2 1/2 inch squares to catch up with the rainbow scrap challenge. This hadn't been a planned rainbow quilt, until, I was playing in the squares.

Umm.. I had plenty of squares haha. I have even pulled aqua squares for April's color.

My oldest son being a loving daddy makes me happy. This is number six for him.

rainbow letters

This is the last Saturday of March and the so scrappy and rainbow scrap challenge color of green. I feel like I made a lot of blocks and pieces for green, but, I didn't even go to the actual green bucket. I worked with 2 1/2 in strips, 2 inch strips and 1 1/2 in strips and different sizes of squares. I have more green than I thought. And I even started a whole new quilt here.
I did several letters for the quilts I am planning to use letters.

I finished a few church window blocks from Temecula quilts.

I am ready for a new color.

scraptastic stars

I am not a big fan of sewing with squares. If I have a choice, I will use strips, but, I had my 2 1/2 in squares out, looking for just a couple of green squares to finish a project. I noticed what a whopping mess there was, and, squirrel, I was sorting squares. I keep them in velveeta containers I find at goodwill.

There was even more of them than I thought. What to do with them?

Melissa Corry at happy quilting shared this block and a free pdf for scraptastic stars here.

And before I knew it, I had a star. And I want to make more stars and more stars.

Oh, and I didn't find any more of the green squares that I was looking to find.
