ode to joey quilt finish

I have an actual finish this week. My ode to Joey quilt is almost ready for the quilt show the first of October. I just need to make a label. I have worked on this quilt for almost three years. First, I made the words by color for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy in 2019. And then, I have slowly been sewing it together. I began this as a way to heal a broken heart, and it has become very meaningful to me.

80x85 = about 20 yards of fabric

I used a wide flannel back and a scrappy binding. There was no pattern for the quilt, just a quote I wanted to remember. I used Lori holt's pieced letter book for the words.

retreat top

We had a sleep in your own bed retreat yesterday and will have one today. My main project to work on was my ode to Joey quilt. I worked on piecing the rows and joining the rows. I plan on using it as a visual aid for Church class on Sunday. I made the words according to the color of the month for rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. It is a rectangle the wrong way, so, I need to figure out what I want to do for the top and bottom.

I have 3 quilts left to work on today while I play at quilting. The food was great as a pitch in. The company was fun and there was a free table. what's not to love.

quote marks quilt

It's a new month, but, I still have yellow to finish from February. These are the quote marks from the full stop quilt that Angela is doing. I have a few bonus 2 inch  HSTS - ( half square triangles ) I chose the easy example of quote marks that Angela offered.

I am still taming the scraps this week by cutting 10 inch squares.  3 pounds 5 ounces = 9 1/4 yards = 95.00 worth of fabric. I counted 52 squares = 4 packs of layer cakes = 160.00

My worry is that I won't use them. Since I haven't used a layer cake yet in my quilting.

to do: set goals

September goals are much like August goals. I wanted to accomplish more than I could last month, so this month I will play a little catch up with my projects.

1. quilt pumpkin patch

I brought this old ufo out of the closet, during purple month, for the rainbow scrap challenge. It was all in blocks. I want to finish this quilt this month, and, have it gone. I will need rows, and borders, and quilting.

2. quilt melba' s applique

I put this quilt together in January from 1920s blocks, and added a hexie from me for the center bottom block. I need to attach that and quilt it.

3. make ode to joey top

I keep showing the letters, and, then the words, but, now, it is time to make the top.

4, start circa 1880

I participated in a swap last year of these uneven 9 patch blocks, and, I need to sew setting triangles to it and join it in vertical rows. One of the swappers has hers finished. the other swapper is making vertical rows. Obviously, I will be last on this one.

I can't believe it is September already. August was a pleasant month outdoors, and, it seamed that we made progress on a few outdoor projects.  And, most importanly, we had garden fresh tomatoes. I finished 3 ufos last month , and stayed current with my rainbow scrap challenge projects. My hubby and I visited Prophet's rock, 7 pillars, Adam's Mill, and Indiana Dunes State park. Yesterday, we celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary.

more words

Can I buy a vowel? This is the last of the words I need to join for my quote quilt. Now, I need to lay out all the words, and see if and how they will fit together to make a quilt. I'm scared it all won't fit. Oh, it will. geesh. I am just being a worry wart.

I am making this as part of my rainbow scrap challenge from last year. some of my letters here and here. Each month was a different color. I started putting the letters together into words this year.

piecing progress

I've been trying to move a few projects along. I am not sure why it is taking so long. I have been a little flighty with other sewing.
I have a few more words together for my quote quilt.

And, I am trying to catch up my shoofly blocks. I had a lot more sets cut than I thought. I may be at this awhile.

august goals

My One monthly goal for August includes making a top from my letters for my quote quilt.

I want to finish Jametown landing, which is a top at this point, and, I want to quilt and finish my windmill quilt.

I want to find blue ridge beauty and figure out what it needs to become a quilt.
I participated in a swap last year, and I want to start piecing it. It was our version of circa 1880.

This may be pretty optimistic for the dog days of summer, but, I am sure I will at least make progress. All of these are ufos that can be part of PHD 2020

more letters

I went to quilt guild last night. It was short and everyone wore masks. We were at least 10 feet or more apart. There was no program. Our quilt show for October has been cancelled until next year. I will be leading a workshop on Saturday. There are only 5 signed to come, but, we will have plenty of room to spread and stay away from each other. I am having trouble hearing with masks on, so it might be interesting.
I have been concentrating  on the small words or parts of words for my quote quilt. I have a lot of trimming to do. With all the little bitty pieces, there was some wonkiness. Once the words are together, I will need to decide how I want to join them.

I am making this as part of my rainbow scrap challenge for last year. some of my letters here and here

a blue row

This is the last blue Saturday for the rainbow scrap challenge. I am not really done with my projects, yet. Good thing, I still have time. I wonder what color I will be using next week...

I had the chance to make another blue row for the rainbow row x row I am making.
I prefer to cut my pieces oversized and trim. That way I can use a standard size cut.

I  have 6 rows ready out of 13.

I have started with the blues for putting words together for last year's rainbow quote quilt. I have a few words together, and, it is very exciting. I wasn't sure, when I started, that I would like it or know what I was doing.

to do: make words

I started a quote quilt last year as part of the rainbow scrap challenge. I made the letters for words with each month's color. It was and is, an emotionally healing quilt for a difficult time. I want to put it together as part of my one monthly goal. and phd 2020. I've just started combining the letters into words. I have a lot of trimming to do....

Last week I worked on Jamestown landing, and, have the top together minus borders.

yellow letters

I really like making these letters. It seems quick and then there is the fun of a quick success.
I like that all the letters require pretty much the same size of strip, so I can just cut a 1 1/2 in strip and a 2/12 inch strip and pretty much make everything from there.

Last time I didn't get any takers on the letter game. So I will play it. and, everything plus s on the end.

letters and words

I have been having fun making letters again. I think they are really easy. I am using the Lori Holt spelling bee book. I have really enjoyed how well it is put together, and the instructions are great.
I especially like that I can cut a few strips in common sizes and then use off of them with each letter. So, most of the sizes are common among the letters. I don't feel like I am digging around for something else, or left with unuseable scraps.

My biggest problem is I am angle challenged. And I think the pictures are a big help for someone like me.

These pieces are a bit tricky, since I need more than one direction of corner.

I am making a quote quilt and I am doing it rainbow scrap challenge style. So, all the letters I need for red in January are done.

I am looking at the pictures and feeling like I want to play the "make as many words as you can" game. I was always pretty good at that game at a shower.
How about you? haha
