wedding ring block

I started this wedding ring, or crown and thorns, with a bag of scraps here. I have mostly worked on them as recreational sewing from time to time. I think it is time to put them into the ufo closet and give them a break. I have 20 squares and I would like to have 30.  I need to find other scraps and cut, to be able to go on with this quilt. That is more than recreational sewing. I have other quilts I am committed to finishing, and a garden harvest coming to picking time. So, off it will go to the black hole of ufos. I can't be sad about it. I have enjoyed every minute I have worked on it, and there is a small chance it may see the light of day again. I am not dead yet. LOL

We waited a day too late on the cabbage. But they will still taste yummy. We had 4 this year that we kept covered so that the moths wouldn't eat them. Hubby left them on the back porch and the critters liked that idea. We thought we planted 8, but the other 4 grew white heads and tasted like cauliflower. LOL

wedding ring blocks

I snuck in some sewing of blocks and pieces that are not part of my 5 quilt or rainbow quilting goals. I have a few projects with cut pieces that I like to sew every now and then for fun.

We have our first black blackberry. Last year we covered the bush with net, and had a great harvest. I thought why take it off if we will cover it again next year. Now, I know why. Most of the new growth came right through the netting and set berries before we noticed. If we pull it through now we will lose the berries. so, it is a race to get them before the critters.

time to clean

It's time to clean up around my sewing machine. I just can't pile anything else there. Since I am trying to be deliberate about it. I am sorting, and ... being distracted by little projects that are not done yet. I found these zipper parts that just needed the outside sewn to the centers.

I found all the pieces for this wedding ring block. I am surprised there wasn't something missing.

And this is just the beginning.

I harvested my first bunch of carrots. I had tried carrots many years ago and was very disappointed how they grew here ( we have hard soil). I decided to try again this year, and I am delighted. They are so cute.

recreational sewing

The more I concentrate on finishes, the more I need recreational sewing in addition. I haven't been in a hurry to finish these 2 projects. They are mostly cut, and all I need to do is sit and sew. They are not part of my goals to finish them yet. Other wedding ring blocks here

fishing

While I was shopping at Joann fabrics, I ran into an old high school friend. The fact that she was in a fabric store told me why we were friends. haha.  We haven't seen each other in 10 years. She is still the the smart, funny, sweet person she was all those years ago.

Connie, me

I have more fish finished as a leader/ender. I don't know how I want to arrange them in a quilt. Right now, I like this one best.

I decided to sew a few hsts for the wedding ring I am doing every now and then. I can trim them in the evening while we watch TV.

triangles

I have a new infusion of scrap triangles to work with in the future. My Friday group donated these lovely scraps to me and there are many aqua and teals in the bunch. That will have to do this week for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

treasures

The bag on the right is from my Linda friend's sea swept quilt which is done, which I quilted last week, while I am still piecing mine.

Otherwise, I am making little bits as I get bored with the bigger bits of piecing.

a little here and there

I have made some progress on some of my projects.

I cut some more hsts for go fish leader/ender challenge from quiltville.

I made another block for the wedding ring or cross and crown blocks. I sorted through what I had cut and made sets. I should be able to grab a set and sew a block when time permits.

I realized I  hadn't looked at the shirt anvil blocks in a while. I sewed some hsts together in sets, so that, when I have the time, I can just sew the blocks.

And I found the one missing hourglass that had stopped the sewing on this clarissa block. It was buried in a pile. I just wanted to try one after seeing Cathy's blocks on sane, crazy, crumby quilting. While I was making it and had all but the last row done, I was convinced it was beyond my scope and ability. But, after finding the last hourglass, and finishing the block, I am curious to see if I could do another....

to do: make a little progress

While I am working on my focus projects, I do a little piecing as leader/enders. It helps break the monotony of millions of hsts, and adding loooong rows to tops I am trying to finish. I am bouncing between rainbow scrap challenge quilts, grassy creek mystery quilt, and country roads top. country roads isn't moving along as quickly as I had hoped. The mystery quilt takes time. I really like the piecing, so, I don't mind.

It has been a cold dreary week here, and we haven't been out and about. We need to get moving. We live in a spot in Indiana that is more dreary than other parts. I think it is the car manufacturing that keeps a cloud cover over our little area. If we drive 40 miles in any direction, the clouds disappear.

this and that

I visited with my endocrinologist, last week, and my diabetic numbers are down from the first part of the pandemic, but still need a little more help. We talked about how I haven't been exercising, with the pandemic rising and cold weather. I have been afraid to go to the gym. She said she thought it would be safe enough, since, they have more than likely been following protocols. hmm.. She is a doctor, so today, I will start going to the gym again. Wish me luck.... that I don't get sick, and that, I can do more than sit in a chair and moan for the rest of the day. I know I will eventually feel better with light exercise, but, at this age, it takes a bit to get there.

I am grateful for medical professionals everywhere who make life decisions a little easier, and work for our good. #give thanks

I've added a bit more to my on going projects. Sometimes, when I want to just sew I grab a few and make blocks. Too bad, this doesn't have the same benefits as exercise, as, I would much rather stay home and do more of these.

wedding ring blocks

It was a difficult week last week, and, I escaped as often as possible to the sewing machine. I worked on piecing  the 16 hsts that are in these blocks. I would sew during the day and then, trim and iron in the evening watching tv. My hubby bought the " leave me alone I am watching hallmark Christmas movies" socks for me last year for Christmas. I am practically living in them. haha.

These are part of a scrap bag I had last year about this time. looking back at the blog post, I see why I am having a problem with some of the sets I cut. I was aiming for 12 hsts when I need 16. These are called wedding ring blocks or cross and crown.

I have a new Grandson, but he was born prematurely ( due in January) and was 3 1/2 pounds and can't breath on his own... yet. They are doing wonderful things with preemies and we are very hopeful.

stash buster

So funny.... definitely me

I have a few more stash buster 2020 blocks made. If I have a scrap that I can get a 3 1/2 inch strip and a matching 2 inch strip, I will put it back for this block. Then I cut it until I can't get any more matching sets. I have several repeats this way, but then the scrap is gone.

I have a bin of 2 1/2 inch hsts and matching 2 1/2 inch squares. I cut the wedding ring blocks the same way. I need 16 hsts and 4 matching squares. I cut the hsts until I have 16, then, cut the matching squares. Any leftover hsts in a fabric that doesn't have all 16 I need, I throw ( gently) into a hsts box.

I have felt a little under the weather lately. I imagine it is just the changing of the seasons.

wedding ring block

Awhile ago, I mentioned that I had a bag of squares that were cut a little off. And, that, I would have to trim, and, cut for something new here. I made sets of the pieces I would need, and, then put them in a drawer. I forgot about them, until, I was checking for something and found them again. I was able to piece one lonely block. I am going to like them.

I couldn't fit another piece of 2 1/2 inch fabric into my temporary drawer. It wouldn't close. It was time to sort the pieces by color and put them, with their friends, in the permanent drawer. I keep the temporary drawer near my cutting table. I throw any 2 1/2 inch strips in as I cut them.

But, guess what? Now, I have permanent drawers I can not close. haha I especially have too many blue 2 1/2 inch strips. Any ideas?
