These are mystery jelly rolls from last December. I am including in this years totals because I was hiding them from myself.

cute

Stash report January 29, 2023

fabric added: 6 yards
fabric added year to date: 19 1/2 yards

fabric used: 25 + 12 yards donated   sea swept finished

fabric used year to date: 49 yards

29 1/2 yards used more than bought - Yippee I have flipped to the used side

I sewed 6 days last week.  including Friday sew

Last week, I stitched and finished a hexie while traveling in the car. This week, I hope to add it to the mother ship. As I move up the side of my quilt, I want to work to straighten the edge. I have 2 sides to that point and I am adding a row to make it bigger. That is the row, I will work to a straight edge.

I am running low on scraps that are big enough for the last rounds

tiny storm block

We had our first snowfall on Halloween. It was a surprise this early. It has been a pretty fall, and our sweet gum finally had yellow leaves. We bought sweet gum especially for it's fall color, but it hasn't changed in the fall in four years. It was lovely this year.

I stopped trying to catch up on the tiny Tuesday blocks when I ran into this little challenging block.
I was a bit intimidated.

It was all paper pieced, but the pieces were very tiny.

I didn't do it all at once, but a little every day.

It wasn't so bad after I started.

And I have a great block for my rainbow scrap challenge sampler quilt.

A little fishy

We had a beautiful freezing rain last night - as long as you didn't want to drive anywhere.

There were pretty ice sculptures everywhere.
I am still working on my "finish" quilt. I have all the pieces ready and I have started to form the rows.
But, I am thinking of complicating this quilt and making a fun border. No wonder I don't "finish" everything.

Our Meijer grocery store had turkeys for 37 cents a pound. Of course, they were the big ones. It was an interesting experience purchasing a turkey. Every woman in Kokomo was standing in front of the frozen meat case with their carts blocking the actual case. And they must have brought a friend with them. I heard many conversations about how they won't fit in the fryer, and who would ever eat that much turkey. And many said that they don't even do Thanksgiving anymore. I was surprised at how many purchased the smaller turkeys for 2.00 a pound. I guess even if it isn't smart, I will still be frugal. I thought about how there is just the 2 of us eating at home now, and, my freezer is full, but, I can't remember when I could get any meat for 37 cents a pound. So I was going to buy one or 2.
The first one, I thawed right away, and hubby smoked it. Oh my yummy. But, there was more than we could want left. I decided to can it. I made 6 quarts of turkey with broth- Glad I still have those skills.

fish

For my Friday finish project, I am working on an old ufo. I had bought 10 fish jar blocks from ebay when the jar quilts were a trend. I didn't think about how hard 10 blocks would be to set in a quilt. It has plagued me every time I have decided to work on it. There were solutions, of course, but I didn't realize I would be ocd enough to want 12 blocks to match. sigh.. But, I have a plan. In an old 2005 magazine, I saw this quilt.. I didn't like the quilt, but I liked the fish idea.

And why was I looking at a 2005 old magazine?. I decided it was time to go through old magazines and get rid of any that I didn't find anything I wanted to make in it.
Rule 1. There had to be 3 projects to keep the magazine.
Rule 2. If there was less than 3, I would tear it out and keep it in a file.

After this discovery, I quit looking through magazines. because, I checked any pages that were bookmarked in a magazine, and 70% I didn't want to make anymore. But there were others that I liked that I hadn't liked before. Which, I concluded, meant that every quilt might be relevant and just depends on the age and experience of the day I look. sigh.. No wonder I am a hoarder.

Back to the fish,  I decided two fish blocks would be great for the two missing blocks, even if they were paper pieced

and fiddley

If I can't have matching blocks, it is best to do completely different. I have not done a two part paper piecing before. But, it worked great. I can't say I didn't have trouble with the angles. But, it is cute.

note

I think I can finish this now, and it might be perfect for one of my Grandsons. Why I decided to have a finish quilt to work on here.

hooking a leaf

I have a leaf hooked in my Cleveland rug. I am guessing it symbolizes the botanical gardens. It's fun to revisit Cleveland and the biennial in memories as I hook this rug.

It has been awhile since I worked on the Christmas snowflake quilt. But I was able to sew another red one. I only need 3 more blocks to begin assembly.

Linda from Friday quilt group has finished a quilt of valor for the vet's home.

and another donation quilt for the police department. This one included donated fabric from the guild.
She collects the quilts from the guild in October to make one big donation.

a few more blocks

I'm hoping to find a little progress this week. While I have been working on finishing the last blocks for glitter, I have made 2 jewel box stars as the leader / ender.

I had the pieces for another Christmas snowflake paper pieced. I trimmed, and de-papered them, and sewed the block together.

And I have finished 2 more glitter blocks.

parts and blocks

I have really enjoyed the paper piecing and working on Christmas Snowflake quilt. I find it repetitive enough that I can just set a rhythm and sew away, but interesting enough to hold my interest. And the results are great.

I don't have all the paper piecing done, but I still had to make a few blocks to see how they are coming together. They are so fun.

It's a chance to see all the fun old Christmas fabrics play nicely together and be useful.

Christmas snowflake assembly

And now we have come to the last of the Christmas snowflake instructions and time to start assembly.

Choose a center square in a square  from week 1

add a set of 4 wings from week 2

and 4 matching corners from week 3

And sew together like a 9 patch and tada it is finished. Again, there are 16 blocks. Arrange on a design wall and assemble in rows.

Snowflake corners

This is the last part of the snowflake block.

It's time to make the corners. Here is a quick tutorial for foundation piecing. The wrong side of the fabric faces the wrong side of the paper. Each piece has been cut to size.

The piecing on the corner will use the prints in number order. #2 print is the same as # 1 on the wings. #5 on the corner is the same  #4 on the wings. # 8 on the corner is the same as # 7 on the wings.

The first set of rectangles is the smaller set. The next round will be the larger rectangle.

It is important to check against a light source that the triangles are centered.

I had the most trouble with the last pesky triangle. I am not sure why.

Each block will need four matching corners. And these corners should have the same fabric as the four matching wings. So make 64.
After this we are ready to assemble. It won't be long now.

Christmas Snowflake wings

I am working on cutting and sewing this Christmas quilt. I am planning on sharing as I go along.

Here is a quick tutorial for foundation piecing. The wrong side of the fabric faces the wrong side of the paper.
It is a bit tricky placing the print triangle. I wish it was a bit bigger with more wiggle room.

With white fabric it has to be trimmed or the dark will show through the fabric.

In my quilt I am using the same fabric in rounds around the center of each block. So the block will take 4 of the same set. There are 64 sets of the wings to do for the quilt.

I prefer to tear off the paper before I start any quilt assembly.
