Lucky stars finish

I started my lucky stars quilt in January 0f 2023 as part of the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I made the stars each month using the color of the month. My plan was to use colors in a Kaffe jelly roll that I wanted to use from my stash.

I had my lucky star blocks sorted into rows by color of the stars in November 2023. It was ready to be quilted in December. I drew the number of this quilt to quilt in April. I had it quilted by the 30th but it needed to be bound. Now, it is finshed.

62 x 78 = 15 yards

rsc summary

summary of 2023 projects

fish school/ kismet is all ready to assemble and packed away for a vacation in the ufo closet

I made the necessary string blocks after the blocks were done according to the rsc colors.

I finished the center of the top for hollow nine. I have cut the wide borders in white and made green vines to add a floral applique .

somewhere in the middle of the year I forgot my strip weave project. I made 12 blocks and I wanted 20. oops.

I was making nine patches for a quilt called diffussion from quilted twins but I wasn't sure how I wanted to make them into a quilt. I was making them in fall colors.

diffusion - quilted twins

I made stars in in the color of the month in with bright batiks and now the top is ready to finish

I cut for the 2023 stashbuster each month - I don't see any mention of that in my posts. I think I made one block.
I made sashing and border strips by color for garlic knots and I made QSTs for box kite

qsts for box kite

I am happy with what is done, but, no finishes yet

Next year. Hard to believe it is time to think about 2024.

1. Across the wide missourri. -I plan to include an older UFO that needs applique. I am intimidated with applique, so, I think making something, maybe only one thing, per month might help me overcome my fears.
2. sugar grove - a quiltville pattern made with a gazillion HSTs. I thought I would include cutting and sewing HSTS by color.
3 2024 stashbuster - there will be a new one I can cut according to colors.
4 lemoyne star - I have the die and thought I would cut for each color. I might want to make a reverse one along with the one in color.

I have a green drawer that won't close, and my 2 1/2 inch strips are a mess. I would like to make a few donation quilts.

lucky star top

Lucky star rainbow scrap challenge quilt is a top. I have enjoyed making this quilt this year. The colors and fabrics are different than I usually use. Sew, I enjoyed the change. I always enjoy the monthly scrap sewing by color. It makes it seem less intimidating. This quilt is going into the to be quilted closet for a well - deserved vacation.

It's time to look at my monthly PHD report. So far this year, I have completed 26 UFOs from my project closet. Can I do that again next year. I need to do it. But, I am experiencing burn out with enthusiasm. Hopefully with the new year, everything will seem like new again. I think I am on track for 2 more finishes in December - fingers crossed.
Next year, I want to clear the to be quilted closet. I may use a 2 for 1 plan. I have some fun quilts in there, that need to become useful.

more lucky stars

I had my lucky star blocks sorted into rows by color of the stars. The next step was to make sure the sashings were turned the right way, and, as evenly distributed as I could get them. I spent the day at an open sew making rows.

Linda friend was doing the same with her reproduction stars.

I have a few rows sewn together- getting closer.

lucky star colors

I had the opportunity at open sew to lay out all the lucky star blocks in an attempt to distribute the colors. The only colors I was focusing on, are the the colors of the stars. I didn't have time to organize the sashing colors. But, I have all the rows together in star order. Next time, I will sit, and, turn the sashings in the right order.

Every year, for years, our community has sponsored decorated Christmas trees. The trees are sold at auction, and, the money is donated to We care charity for Christmas charity giving. At this point, mostly businesses can afford to buy the trees and display them at their businesses. Our guild charity chairman decided to try We care this year for our guild. This year is the guild's first participation in sponsoring a tree. Here is my picture of it on display at the mall. It looks great. The chairman valued the tree at 4,000.00. There are many donations and contributions to our "tree". The trees will be auctioned on November 12th. We will see if anyone wants a quilty Christmas.

Barbie was a big theme this year, I saw 5 trees all decked out with pink and Barbie. I didn't take many pictures. I was busy looking.

lucky star blocks done

I have all the blocks sashed for my lucky star quilt. I have an open sew today, and I might be able to get the rows ready to go. Distributing the colors will be a challenge I am sure. I made the star blocks as part of the rainbow scrap challenge this year.

I know my quilting buddy is planning on arranging her top at the open sew today, too. It should be time for giggles and grins.

more lucky star

After finishing the side sashings on my lucky star blocks, I began adding the other 2 sashings. I have 8 blocks that are completely sashed. With these crazy kaffe fabrics, I am wondering how I will distribute the colors when they are done. It should be interesting.

lucky sashings

Last month, I taught a guild workshop with my lucky star quilt block, My plan was to use a kaffe jelly roll that I have had for a few years. Now, that the blocks are done, I have started adding the sashing. It is easy sewing, and  each one is a new surprise. I made the blocks as part of the rainbow scrap challenge this year. I have all the short sashings completed.

lucky star

I taught a mini workshop, last Saturday, for the guild on quick and easy star tips. I have been making lucky star in the color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge. There were 6 making the stars with me, and, I showed them how I was going to sash mine. pretty easy. I have used a layer cake of batiks for my stars, and, I am using an older kaffe jelly roll for the sashings, I had made the monthly stars with 25 blocks in mind. I prefer rectangle quilts, so, I decided to add 5 more and then I will be ready to assemble the top.

rsc hollow

Not much aqua sewing for the rainbow scrap challenge. I injured my finger over labor day ( no doctors available), and, we have spent a week without the internet. And, I may or may not have had a grumpy cat attitude. But, I have been thinking about next year.

I have 5 ideas and only 1 that I am sure I want to make. Of course, as soon as I see everyone else's projects I will be inspired. I think I want to do bonnie Hunter's sugar grove for my rsc project. As part of the 5 quilt project, the next ufo is my 3 inch churn dash blocks. I might add that to the rsc instead to build up the number of blocks. They are so cute.

lucky star

I have lucky star blocks finished for the rainbow scrap challenge. I think that is everything for yellow and the month of August. I think the only color I still need is turquoise.

And our sunflowers have been lovely this year

I am looking forward to an open sew today. Have a great weekend.

lucky star block

I am finished with orange for the rainbow scrap challenge in May.  I made 3 orange stars from batiks to add to the stars I have been doing this year. I made them this morning. I am just getting up too early any more.

The Spring flowers have been beautiful this year. The pink roses are from my Grandmother's garden. I rescued them when I was a child. They are blooming this year just like the year I fell in love with them as a young girl. In front of the them are dame's rocket which is one of my favorites, too. They smell so great and I let them pop up wherever they want.

The last few years, our peony has opened by memorial day, but, this year it did. We have had this plant since we were married, and moved it twice.

We had irises for years and then they all seemed to die one year. We are slowly bringing them back.

lucky star

This week I worked on my lucky star blocks in purple for the rainbow scrap challenge this month. I still have a week to go before the end of the month. I may still get to work on my girlie girl.

I have had fabrics pulled for a quilt for a while now. I was not in the mood for piecing, so, I started cutting. I am using recycled shirts, and making a kaliedescope quilt found in this older book. I just needed to cut 4 1/2 inch strips. I have other colors that I still need to cut. I may be cutting enough for 100 quilts, but, it was therapuetic. The book still has templates, and, no rotary cutting instructions. I can remember my first quilts were made that way. Thank goodness for the invention of rotary cutting.

more green

I don't know the color for April, so, I am showing the last of my March green blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge.

I made Lucky star in green.

I lost my fish school blocks last month. I told all my scraps, that, if, they did not rat out the delinquent fish hsts, that, I would burn all of my scraps and start buying new fabric. There was a snitch, and, now, they are back in custody, and the scraps are once again safe.

It is the end of the month and I checked my progress for the PHD and will link with that group. I finished 2 UFOs in March, Which is 6 for the year, so far.

cutting for green projects

I still can't find my 60 or so hsts in green for fish school. All I have left is a picture of the strips I used to cut them. sad... I hope they are doing fine wherever they are.

I cut the qsts for the border of an older ufo Box kite in green

I cut the pieces I needed for lucky stars in green.

I have not been sewing much this week, so, I feel behind for the for the rainbow scrap challenge in March.

I am off for a sew day today, maybe the mojo will be there.
