5 quilts report August 14, 2023

last report July 19,2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

There has been some rotation of projects as I have finally finished a few. I look forward to new Ufos that have come out to play with me.

1. wensleydale a jen kingwell pattern - twosies have turned into foursies. I have not taken this quilt out to social sewing. I feel it requires more focus. But, it takes longer.

2. Block of the month UFO Saturday soire.  This an older UFO from 2013. After, I had it on the frame for quilting, I decided I wasn't happy with some of the points, and, I would need to redo a few. I took it off and started ripping and sewing. It is on the frame, again, and I have started quilting.

Finished  I am much happier with how it turned out after resewing several spots.

3. plaid kaliedescope - I have cut many, many wedges. I have sorted for some block combos, but, I am not nearly as close to a cutting finish as I thought I was.

more shirts for a variety.

4. rectangle wrangle quilt.-all the blocks are finished for the center. I need to make ohio stars for the border.

5. girlie garden from the needs quilting list. is finished

new # 4. uneven 9 patch leftovers

new # 5 spoolin around leader ender challenge 2013

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.

1. hand me down - back made, on the frame

2. triple irish chain - found,

3. Lucille star flimsy -find

4. fair and square- back, binding prepared

stars in red

I have my lucky stars done in red for the rainbow scrap challenge. July is red month. I only need 2 more colors for this project and I will be ready to start the assembly process.

And just a happy coincidence, I finished Saturday soire quilt this week which happens to be a red and white quilt.

saturday soire quilt finish

This older block of the month is finally finished. Saturday soire is an older ufo from 2013. I added it to the 5 quilts list in April 2023. The 12 center blocks were already done, and, I had to make the 3 setting kits, and assemble the top. The setting kits were much more intense than I expected. I have only made two block of the months. This one does not disappoint. The fabrics are beautiful.

82 x 100 = 23 yards

I used a wide backing and quilted it on the longarm with free motion swirls.

5 quilts July 19, 2023

 last report june 23, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

I feel like I have cheated on the 5 quilts, and, dabbled too much with new shiny projects. I played with my hsts drawer for sugar grove, I played with fractured squares with 2 1/2 inch scraps, I am playing with a quilty buddy making strip tease, and, just had to play with 9 patches for 9 patch on point. And I am in a cutting scraps mood.

1. wensleydale a jen kingwell pattern - I have all 60 blocks made and I am slowly making twosies as leader/enders

2. Block of the month UFO Saturday soire.  This an older UFO from 2013. After, I had it on the frame for quilting, I decided I wasn't happy with some of the points and I would need to redo a few. I took it off and started ripping and sewing. It is on the frame, again, and I have started quilting

5 quilts june 23, 2023

 last report May 29 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

I have made more progress than I thought I had this last month on my 5 quilts. Progress seems small, as there are so many steps to each one, and I may only do part of one at a time, but, overall, I am seeing some finishing.

1. wensleydale a jen kingwell pattern - I have made 30 or so. I need 60. I try to make 2 every morning. It surprised me, when I counted, that I am over half way done with the blocks. They seem to take forever.

2. Block of the month UFO Saturday soire.  This an older UFO from 2013. I have been able to start assembly. It is my one monthly goal for June, so, I hope to see a finish. I worked and worked to get all the assembly pieces together and then, poof, it was almost together.

3. plaid kaliedescope - I have cut many , many wedges, and need to sort them into block combos to see how many I have, and how many I still need to cut.

4. rectangle wrangle quilt.-I thought this would make a good portable project, But, I mostly sew a couple blocks every morning. I have all ( 42)  uphill blocks finished. Next are the downhill blocks. It will take a few to break my groove and start another groove.

5. wonky wishes is a new ufo project added in June. It was surprising how quickly I was able to quilt and finish.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.

assembling saturday soire

I went with quilty friends to an open sew, and, began putting pieces together for my Block of the month UFO Saturday soire.

It was great to have room to lay it out on the floor.

I realized here that I had turned a row. It didn't matter if the center blocks were wrong, but, I had the ending pieces wrong.  Which, also meant, the sashing was on the wrong side. The easiest way to fix it was remove the sashing row, switch the ends and keep the blocks wrong. But, it was nearly time to go home after a long day. So, I will tackle it another time.

It is looking very pretty. I am thrilled. I have made this my one monthly goal for June. It bothers me that so many of my UFOs are great quilts that have languished for so long. I think in the beginning, I thought I could do it all. I would lose interest because I was busy. And then, I would "forget" what was out of sight. I think, I would lose interest, because of all the bright and shiny new quilts, I would see, and projects that drew me away from what I was doing. As I am getting older, there are still bright and shiny quilts to distract me, but, not as many that I want to commit.    And, I still " forget", but more from a brain that just leaks.  haha

june one monthly goal

I have had Saturday soire BOM on my 5 quilts list for most of the year. The blocks were done, previously, and ALL I had to do was finish the top and assemble it to finish it. It has been a bigger project than I anticipated. I found 3 setting kits as part of the block of the month. My one monthly goal for June is to finish it, quilted and bound.

I have  kit 1 finished, and I have the 2nd kit in progress. I think I can start the assembly,

row 1

June is garden season, not quilting season, but I want to see if I can finish this off the ufo list.

a cleaning finish

My April goal was to clean the sewing room floor which took until middle May to finish. A by product of that cleaning, was to clean the cutting table, too. This is a Friday finish with great benefit.

It went from this....

embarrassing

to this...

tada

By cleaning this, my scrap management just improved. And, I am working diligently on my ironing room in May ( and probably June) When I run into a stack of mess, I have this lovely table to sort and cut. yipee. I have been very careful to clean it every night, to keep it that way.

I  have all the sashings  finished for Saturday soire

which way?

5 quilts May 29, 2023

 last report April 28, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

Ok, confession, I have not stuck to my 5 quilts very well, I have continued to work on them, but my resolve to stick to them only has not worked. I have wandered into other fun projects. But, I can feel the overwhelm starting and I need get back on track.

This month the numbering is a little wonky. I have finishes that I haven't summarized and new ones to add.

1. wensleydale a jenn kingwell pattern - I  have cut 20 - 25 so far. I have made 5 or so. They are much bigger than I expected. I like them better than I thought I would, but I am not thrilled with how well they are fitting together even with acrylic templates. I have to bribe myself to work on them. It doesn't help that I will have to cut again- yuk

2. trip around the world class- It was a great class and fun day

mine

3. Hand me down -the top is done - moved to the 'to be quilted' closet but soon

3. wonky courthouse steps 2  is finished

3. Saturday soire block of the month. This an older UFO from 2013. I have been working on the setting kits and I have part 1 done. Part 2 appears to be sashings.

4. new kaliedescope I have cut strips and need to cut them into kaleidoscope wedges

5. beige 4 patch quilt -I decided to turn this into a piece for backing.   - gone

6. rectangle wrangle I thought this would make a good portable project, But, I mostly sew a couple blocks every morning. I have all ( 42)  uphill blocks finished. Next are the downhill blocks. It will take a few to break my groove and start another groove.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.

Saturday soire block of the month progress

I have been working on one of my 5 quilt projects, lately.

5. Saturday soire block of the month. This an older UFO from 2013. I opened the box, and, all of the blocks are pieced. I have the 3 setting kits to start. I am cutting for kit 1. I remember being in love with this quilt. I don't have a picture in the box, so, now, it will be a mystery. I bought the red kit as a block of the month. There was a blue option, and when the lqs closed, I bought the blue version as part of their closing sale. For now, red is one of my 5 quilts until it is finished.

I discovered 4 setting kits in the box. They all need to be cut and pieced. They are more intensive than the blocks themselves were as the block of the month. LOL I am making progress, though. So far, I can take this as a portable project when I social sew.

these are the alternate blocks to the sampler blocks

these are the setting blocks

5 quilts April 28, 2023

last report April 17, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

This group of 5 quilts has a lot of cutting involved. Which is not my favorite part, so, there has been a few distractions. One of them, is cleaning my sewing room floor, and, the subsequent stuff that I have found buried in the rubble. I dusted under my sewing machine where I keep all the little cast off triangles. I have 2 shoe boxes ( and a few baggies) full and this is my equivalent of legos. It is definitely more fun than cutting.

1. wensleydale - I  started cutting - I have 10 cut so far. They are definitely fiddley to cut. It will take some time.

At first, I bought the paper piecing papers, but, I found the templates for a good price, and decided to use them.

I may have to sew a couple just for fun before I get them all cut. It would be foolish to cut them all out, and discover then, that they don't sew together well. haha

2. trip around the world class- I have been asked to teach for guild. I have the strips sewn together from my stash of flannels. I have the strips ready, and, I am laying out the top. I think it will be cute.

I have the rows pinned and ready to sew together. I should be ready for the May workshop.

3. Hand me down -the top is done

And, I have added the borders. I need to piece a backing, prepare binding, and wait for the long arm to open up to quilt it. I didn't get it done for my April one monthly goal.

4. wonky courthouse steps 2 found, on the frame, quilted, trimmed, attached binding- I need to sew the binding
