rug twining

My Friday quilt friends asked me to teach them to twine a rug. I enjoy the process and love the rugs I have made. They are the best scatter rugs I have ever had. They lay completely flat, and don't schooch. And they are machine washable. I made the frame for Sue and she wanted to try to use up odd strips of scraps. We managed to get the warp put on using an old sheet, and she started the actual twining.

 I have a not worked on the carolina Crossroads mystery quilt this week but I did get a few more  making waves blocks finished. Others I have done.

I have the patriotic boxy stars webbed together. The more I look at it, the more I think I want to go bigger. I would need to add 9 more blocks to make it 5 x 6. Heaven knows I have enough fabric to do it.

I am getting so close on this pillow and I love the background I dyed.

I started another rag rug. The plan was to use up strips if T shirt "yarn". But it was too thin, so I Had it warped, and just started using scrap fabric. I sure didn't mean to start a new project, but I didn't want to waste the warp.  I was using a new size of loom that hubby made from a picture frame from goodwill. I do like the size so far.

I have finished another rag rug using my homemade rug loom. I had an entire bucket of fabric that didn't make the cut even for a string quilt, so I used them in this rug. It measures 28 x 38 inches and lays so perfectly flat on the floor. That is why I love them better than crochet or braided rag rugs. The technique is called twining.
I made the frame here.

 I have a new quilt on the frame with a music theme.

I bought 1x3 wood from Menards and cut them to make a frame that was 27 x 39. This is a smaller size than what  I have now.

 

i had found a tutorial on line that called for wood screws. It gave specific numbers and sizes but I couldn't find them. After trying other alternatives, I decided to use # 8- 3inch wood screws to put the frame together. It worked just fine.

 

I am trying to keep this project, as mine, to learn, and to keep from relying on my husband's time and energies, but, I am still awkward, and he did help hold and pre drill some of the holes.

I reinforced the frame with angle brackets.

After it was together, it was sanded and marked with holes 1 inch apart, across the top and bottom. I marked from the center out in each direction.

And then, DH pre drilled the holes, and I drilled the screws .

It is finished! Here is a rug that I had done on a larger frame. I used the most ugly camouflage fabric, and other unwanted ugly quilting fabric. It just comes out looking like a color. Jo Kramer  at jo's country junction used T shirt she had cut up. Any sheets from goodwill would be great, as it would give longer strips.

I have a friend who wants to learn how to do this, and I will be sharing my frame. She wants to use up scraps. and this should definitely make a dent.
