sea swept again

I feel like a broken record.... sea swept, easy breezy, aunt eliza.. repeat. I am really trying to stick to these and making progress however small. Our Friday group met again... on Friday... and I have a new batch of sea swept blocks finished.  I really like making these. I need to cut more background if I am to continue. I only work on these on Friday. I need 42 blocks to do the pattern. I think I have 20 +.

My friend Linda is making her sea swept with the smaller blocks and paper piecing. We had a chance to compare. Mine ( bottom right) is bigger. I was surprised by how much it is bigger. I am cutting the pieces and piecing them.

red color blocks

This week, I worked on the16 patch blocks for the Debby Brown color blocks quilt alongI found this free quilt along with Debby Brown  from Alycia at quilty girl

I didn't have any red 2 1/2 inch squares already cut. So I strip sewed these using shorter pieces. I really have diminished my stash of 2 1/2 inch squares over the last 3 years with the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I used to have 7 velveeta boxes stuffed full. Now, I have 3 partially full.

I've used them in scraptastic stars, scrappy irish chain, shine, and cutting garden,

Right now, I am just accumulating the blocks. Once I have all the colors from the rsc, I will start planning the quilts.

little houses

I don't have a finish of my own, but, I have a customer quilt finish. This is a quilt with swap blocks that 5 of us participated in a few years ago. As far as I know, Linda is the first to complete hers. It was such a fun swap. I like how she put it together. One of our swappers had a made a church that was twice the size of our 4 1/2 inch block. She put that in the center.

She put any leftover on the back I quilted an simple stipple so that the houses were the important part. I quilted leaves in the large border.

She made paper pieced blocks of trees for the borders.

we had some creative houses that I thoroughly enjoyed

Mine is not a top yet. I still love looking at all the fun blocks. Something new, will catch my eye every time I look at it.

eliza star

I have started the sashing for Elizas star. So far, I have sewn 2 inch wof strips to each side of 5 1/2 inch wof strip of gingham x 4. I subcut them at 2 inches. I didn't calculate the sashings between rows, so, I will have to make and cut more.

I wanted to see at least a few sewn together. Not all the blocks are exactly the same size ( how did that happen haha) .I have to do a bit of stretching or easing. Most of the pieces are on the bias, so, I can.

I brought this quilt out of the ufo closet in early May. And I am trying to just move it along to a top for my one monthly goal.

to do: new snowball

I noticed that I have a lot of 2 inch squares that are not matching for easy breezy. So, when I saw this new block, I knew I could use the non- matching 2 inch squares. Any chance to get scrappy is fun for me. I found this at Suzies-scraps.com, scrappy snowballs.

I have been sewing HSTs for the shirt anvil block again. I cut for awhile, and, then, I sew for awhile. Then, I pick up something else for a bit. I have quilting ADD. with no H for hyperactivity.

progress

My Friday quilt group met, and, I had a chance to work on sea swept. I made 7 more blocks.

And, there are still more easy breezy blocks. Completed blocks are taking over the box, which means I am making progress.

stash report May 23, 2021

I indulged in 2 moda scrap bags. I know they are not really economical, or practical, but, I love the mystery. Some bags are a disappointment, but, these were great. The strips were mostly 3 inches wide, and, many were coordinating.

red crumb stars

I made 10 crumb stars for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. May's color is red. After a few years of following along with the rainbow scrap challenge, I was surprised that there were very few small red scraps. I still have more than I need, but I have, apparently, weeded the smallest pieces out of the scraps. Even, the 2 1/2 inch strip bin was mostly long strips. And I have used all my 2 1/2 inch squares. It was a bit of a struggle to find the pieces for the crumb centers.

After 3 tries, I have successfully made a sourdough starter.... in a red bowl. I tried a few years ago with a pioneer starter. I really didn't like the smell of it, and, wasn't confident enough to follow through with it. All I have made with my new starter was banana bread.

flower rug finish

I finished a class project for rug hooking. We started it last Spring after my hubby had back surgery. I didn't start it again until this year. It is a small rug that I will use as a wall hanging - Probably  only 16 x 16 inches. Part of the class was the pattern, wool, and, then, instruction from the teacher on shading. I think we had 9 different wools for shading. Lori Cravens was the teacher. I don't like the binding part of finishing, so, at least it was small, and, I could do it at the guild meeting.

I used a homespun wool yarn for binding that my hubby spun a long time ago

ta da

This was the other color option that Betty is working on finishing.

Jan is finishing this beautiful rug

And Vivian finished this little charmer - I do like sheep

recycle shirts

These blocks are addictive. While I was planning my new sea swept quilt, I made sample blocks in shirt fabric. Good thing I did, I made mistakes. But, now, I want to keep making snails trails in shirt fabrics too. I will need to cut more. If you can start one quilt why not start two.

Working with recycled shirts is such a pleasure. The fabric is soft and does what I ask it to do. There is a lot of fabric in a shirt. I have these five shirts are for sale on etsy.

to do: plant something

This has been such a fun, fun project this Spring. We ordered this raised bed from Amazon. I was hoping to get something for our older gardening years. Why is it that we are getting shorter, but, the ground is getting further away. We filled the bottom with sticks followed by wood chips from the recycle place, and, then, topped it with compost from the bulk compost place. It came in a box and hubby had to assemble it. The hardest part was deciding where to put it. We aren't going to ever move it once it is full.  Hubby deeded the planting to me. Oh the possibilities.

before compost

should I name it?

Quilting has taken a backseat to my new adventure, but, I have kept up with 2 easy breezy blocks every day.

eliza

I have found a large piece of red gingham in my stash that I like for the sashings for Aunt Eliza'a star. I think I want to do a nine patch in the center of the sashing. This is my may one monthly goal., and I need to get going on it if I want to get it done.

I have ALL the 16 patch blocks made for the quilted twins free pattern called swingin checkerboard. I am not sure if I will look to the next step or put it away for a bit. This has certainly been the year of 16 patches.
