I worked on the hen and chicks this week in orange for the rainbow scrap challenge. I made three sets but didn't get to the 4th. Some of the pieces for the minis were smaller than my thumb LOL. I hope to still catch up with the rest of my orange scraps soon. I am already making plans for next year How about you? If you could see my 2 1/2 inch strip bag in blue, you could guess that will be a priority next year.

cathedral stars finish
My cathedral stars quilt is finished. This was my one monthly goal for August.
I made most of the blocks in 2016 . It popped up on the 5 quilt project in May 2024 and it was a top in June 2024. I found this as a free pattern at quiltville. When I opened the box after all these years, I didn't like the colors I had used to make the blocks. But, It made a striking quilt.

garlic knots quilt top
Last time I blogged about garlic knots, I realized it had an error in the way the blocks were turned. It was immediately put in time out to think about what it had done. I was afraid I would have to take 3 rows apart to remake them. But the only row that was wrong, I could fix by redoing the sashing pieces on one end and reattaching the bottom sashing row.

I have been adding bits and pieces to this tote as I find them cleaning my room - does it ever end? I don't know if I should sort through it ( and re love and keep every piece ) or just throw it in a sack for giveaway.

orange scraps
I have been working on my hsts for sugar grove and the rainbow scrap challenge. This month's color is orange and I definitely want orange in the quilt. I cut and made 7 sets of 5 and 14 sets of 4. I have this month's goal of 4 patches for the baby 30s quilt made.

churn dash finish
Churn dash quilt is actually a combination of 2 older ufos- 6 inch churn dash blocks and 3 1/2 inch churndash blocks. I had started making scrappy churndash blocks as leader/ enders and began to make them in earnest in 2017. I made a big batch of 6 inch scrappy blocks with a quilt in mind and then discovered the adorable 3 1/2 inch blocks much later. They were so cute and I made them just for fun. Both sets of blocks were eventually added to the ufo closet. When churn dash appeared on the list as Part of 5 quilt project, I decided to figure out a quilt for both in one quilt. The top was done in april of 2024. I have been a fan of churn dash blocks as a great old classic block.
The Churn Dash is a very old 9-Patch quilt block pattern, originating between 1800 and 1849. Its name is a result of the resemblance of the triangle and rectangle perimeter of the block to a butter churn and the center square to the stick (or “dash”) of the butter churn.
With only a few elements--triangles, rectangles, and squares-- the Churn Dash was frequently one of the first patterns learned by young girls. In spite of its simplicity, it also provides a challenge for advanced quilters because it lends itself well to very intricate designs.
I have 2 or 3 other churn dash quilts still in ufo status. One made from shirts, one made from florals, and one just scrappy.

sugar grove
I have a few more sugar grove blocks finished. I am cutting orange this month, and I am sure that will make a few more block kits at the ready. I think I have a little over 20 already completed and another 20 blocks kits, and I need 72 blocks. I have been making them as leader enders this year but the focus was cutting and sewing 1800 hsts for the rainbow scrap challenge. Sewing the blocks is just a bonus.

kaliedescope blocks
I have all the blocks made that I need for my kaleidoscope quilt ufo project, and hooray, I can start to sew them together. I am doing an even number - 8 x 8 so I can start with twosies. There will be 3 points to match along each side. I have used a Marti Michell template to cut, which makes the sewing pretty accurate. Although anyone can have an off day. We will see. I do think I have used a more or less equal amount of all the fabrics. I am ready to start assembly.

I have a very big bag of leftover trimmings from quilted quilts. After I trim my quilts, I have been dumping them in a big bag. It's time to decide what to do with them.

orange scraps
My focus this week for the rainbow scrap challenge. was Jo's checkers . I sewed the white 2 1/2 inch square to each of my 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles for the 2 rows I wanted to make in orange. I have 3 more rows to make for this quilt this year.

neutral territory finish
Neutral territory is an older ufo from 2013. My local quilt shop carried this line of fabric and had a free pattern. I really liked the shop sample and bought what I would need to make it. The colors are rich and satisfying. The pattern was easy. I chose it for the 5 quilts project last month and had a chance to finish it this month. It doesn't look like any of my latest quilts, so it was a fun change.

unfinished diamond string quilt
In the same box with my lost cheddar jubilee was another ufo from 2016, diamond string. I'm sure it was abandoned long ago because I am recreating a picture and don't have a pattern. Every decision is a head scratcher. I made string blocks and cut them in half. I have some ideas for the borders that I want to try.
I am not officially adding this to the 5 quilts project yet, but I did pin it to the design board so that I will look at it and be inspired and not forget it. It is early to the list because there were just 2 quilts in the box and I could say I had emptied another box haha

cheddar jubilee
This poor quilt was declared lost and I had given up hope. It was on my list as ready to be quilted. I looked everywhere. It had been on the 5 quilt project list, and when it's time came... lost. I mourned and moved on. Recently, I was looking for another ufo to piece and I found this quilt in a box unfinished. Hooray but, I was looking everywhere else than a project box. I had started it in 2017. It started on quiltville as a QAL until it was shut down by the farmer's wife people. The center is finished. What it needs are an inner border and the string blocks outer border.

Now that my neutral territory quilt is finished and ready to quilt ....
I need to decide about the leftovers and scraps. Not my favorite part. I really haven't made cutting scraps a thing this year, since I knew I would not be starting anything new. And many of older ufos didn't have many leftovers. These are enough I need to deal with them.

orange windmills
I made windmills in orange this week as part of my rainbow scrap challenge projects. I love how easy these are to make. Maybe this can be my go to donation quilt block. I am using 2 1/2 inch strips this year and all it takes is an 18 inch strip cut into 4 1/2 inch rectangles after I sew it to an 18 inch background. Although it is August and I still need to look at a block to know which way to turn the little blocks haha
I will trim later |

baskets finish
This basket quilt has been waiting for the quilting since 2022. It was a buck a block monthly block of the month from a store in Indy in 2014 which was actually 3.00 a block. I liked this one so much I even bought the finishing kit. I hope to give this one to a friend, unless I decide it is too small. I love basket quilts. It is a block that has been around at least since the mid 1800s. They look so happy.

making kaliedescope blocks
Part of my 5 quilt project is an older ufo called kaliedescope. I took A workshop with Mary Huey When I opened the box only half of the blocks were finished, so, I am finishing the blocks. All the pieces were cut in 2016. I made most of the dark blocks I need at a Friday sew. Next are the light blocks. I am liking the fabrics I chose way back when.

halloween table runner
Funny story, I drew this older ufo for my 5 quilt project. The box and card said easy halloween stripe table runner. What could be quicker to finish? All that was in the box was what I thought was a kit including fabric. No pattern or instructions. What? Why didn't I purchase the pattern at the same time? It is a few years old but I tried looking on the quilt etc website - no clue. Then I googled halloween table runner- nothing striped. I googled the actual words on the package and the easy striped pattern showed up. Oh, I have that pattern and have used it before. That is why I didn't buy the pattern. The now me, would have liked a note.
I love the fabric and I took a long while to find a pattern, then, the hunt was on for the ruler. nope- so I called a friend and I am borrowing hers until, miraculously, mine will appear when I am almost done.
Long story to say I will be working on this soon for my ufo 5 quilt challenge. The older the ufo gets, the feistier it gets
