My PHD report

scrap cutting

I have added another goal to the 5 quilts project. I want to take one day a month and cut scraps. I will have plenty to choose from since I really didn't cut any for 2024, and the bags of uncut scraps are piling up, all over the fabric room.

I cut a big scrap bag for March and it weighed 2 pounds and 13 ounces which = 8 1/2 yards of useable scrappy fabric.

Looking forward to April

5 quilt December 30, 2024

  last report December 2, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

This report finishes 2024. I will have 3 quilts I will carry over into 2025. But, I will rearrange them to feel like I am starting fresh with the new year. My goal is to quilt each finish each ufo - quilted and bound before I move to the next quilt. But, I will have 5 quilts again that I can work on as I have opportunity. The variety helps keep it interesting while not overwhelming.

I finished 1 ufo in December for a total of  41 for the year -I have a page at the top of the blog for 2024 finishes.

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1. midnight flight - my one monthly goal for December was to finish and I barely made it.

84 x 84

2. scrappy twirl -assemble rows -I cut the border pieces

3. tiny tuesday -I am making 8 rows

4. charming stars -   I gave the blocks away to guild

5. kaleidoscope quilt- border- This was missing and is now found again

I am ready to start fresh with all new projects for 2025. I used a random number generator and chose 26 ufos from my list. I added the last 3 of 2024 ufos that were not finished to list as well.

28 over my goal of 12 for the year

Looking forward to January:

1. squared away - This is my one monthly goal for January. I want to assemble the top.

2. peppermint candy - I need to make the blocks

3. kaleidoscope - I need to make the outer border

4. scrappy twirl - I need to join the blocks with the border

5. tiny tuesday - finish the rows

5 quilt November

 last report November 1, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. My top priority this year are the quilts in the to be quilted closet.

I emptied my 'to be quilted' closet this month. I started the year with 34, and they are all quilted. That is such a relief and very freeing. Hopefully, now, I will just be ready to quilt any UFOs I finish, when I finish them. I am still planning on doing the 5 quilt project next year to finish older ufos. I have chosen 24 projects randomly. Seven of them, I will pretend are starting something new, even though, there has been some kind of work on them. Five of them just need assembly of the blocks, and the rest need piecing work.

I finished 4 ufos in November

I wanted to finish 2 quilts In the 'to be quilted closet' before I did any other UFOs.  I did finish both of my goal ufo quilts this month and emptied the closet.

1. Lozenges 11/24

2. split nine patch 11/24

83 x 96

3. country roads is finished

90 x 90

4. baby 30s is finished

54 x 54

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1. midnight flight - was my one monthly goal for November was to finish all the star blocks. This month, I assembled the quilt to the inner border. The outer border is a pieced border, and then, I will finish it this month, fingers crossed, as my  my one monthly goal for December

2. scrappy twirl no new progress and it is still hanging on my design wall.

3. tiny tuesday - finish the blocks and start the rows

yes, a pig

4. charming stars - needs sashing and assembly

5 quilt November 1, 2024

last report September 30, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. My top priority this year are the quilts in the to be quilted closet.

Again, health issues impacted my goals for October. I just didn't focus well or want to sew much. But, I feel better, for now, and I want to finish strong for the year. I never thought in January that I would have finished 36 ufos this year and nearly empty my over burdened 'to be quilted' closet. That is motivating to keep on going.

I finished 3 ufos in October

I wanted to finish 2 quilts In the 'to be quilted closet' before I did any other UFOs. I  only finished one. But, the second one is on the frame.

1. box kite is finished

2. lozenges  - I did not finish this one ....yet - It is on the frame

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1. halloween stripe runner is finished

2. diamond strings is finished

64 x 64

3. scrappy twirl new in March -I just can't seem to take this quilt seriously. Maybe I should put it back in the box. But, no, I will not be intimidated,  I am leaving it on my design wall and will wait patiently for inspiration. It is embarrassing  how long I have procrastinated this project beyond leaving it in the closet for a few years. But, the plan was once it is out of the closet, I would work on it but I didn't.

4. midnight flight - Finishing all the quadrant blocks was my October one monthly goal. I did - yipee

5. tiny tuesday - finish the blocks - I have black and brown to do.

My PHD for September

Looking forward to November:

quilts to be quilted from the closet -top priority

1. split nine patch

2. lozenges as a repeat

ufo projects for November

1. scrappy twirl -cut for the setting triangles

2. midnight flight -make star blocks -Finishing all the star blocks will be my November one monthly goal.

3. tiny tuesday -finish blocks

5. grandpas star - needs assembly

cathedral stars finish

My cathedral stars quilt is finished. This was my one monthly goal for August.

I made most of the blocks in 2016 . It popped up on the 5 quilt project in May 2024  and it was a top in June 2024. I found this as a free pattern at quiltville. When I opened the box after all these years, I didn't like the colors I had used to make the blocks. But, It made a striking quilt.

85 x 85 = 25 yards

I am never sure about the thread color on a dark scrappy quilt. I used a light gray that I thought would blend with the white and not be so stark on the border. I like how it turned out. The border is not boring and the piecing stands out instead of the quilting in the center. I did my usual free form loops and circles and used a turquoise backing.

dsp 9 finish

I was gifted a bag of 5 inch squares some time ago. The fabrics were older - 70s or 80s. I really liked them and spent some time moving them from place to place waiting for inspiration. I found a great tutorial on suzies scraps   I made nine patches from time to time when I would uncover them in a cleaning fit. When I was ready to have them finished as part of my 5 quilt project, I followed suzies other tutorial. It was an enjoyable process, easy to see and follow. And I used a vintage pink for the border and back. I think it will make a sweet donation quilt. I have a million scrappy charm squares in the bins. And I might even repeat this quilt again.

52 x 52 = 8 yards

and now it is off the to do list.

Christmas snowflake finish

I started my Christmas snowflake quilt in 2018. I taught this as a workshop for the guild and had given instructions on the blog in 2019. I really enjoyed all the variations of the other quilters in the class. It was a top  in 2019. But it languished in the quilting closet until this year as part of my 5 quilt goals.  As a finished quilt it measures 82 x 82 inches. This has to be one my personal favorites.

82 x 82 = 25 yards

I received a wonderful email from someone in blogland showing her finished quilt - again thanks

My apology for the wrong links for the instructions for the qal - I forgot I had to change the .com to .blogspot. These are the new links.

glitter finish

I started making glitter blocks in 2017. Two of my quilting buddies started theirs at the same time. They finished  a while ago. Glitter is a Jen Kingwell pattern from her Quilt Lovely book.

I made it a part of my 5 quilts in early 2024 and had it ready to quilt in April. It has been on the list to quilt and now it is a finished UFo. I wanted to try something a bit more eclectic. I used different backgrounds and combinations than I usually gravitate to using. I used a template set that was fiddley and I finally found my groove for piecing. Everything was from scraps I had.

70 x 77 = 16 yards
