Mill girls is a completed top. I have added the last border....

and mitered the corners...

and it is ready to be quilted...

I have the back on the frame, and the binding ready to attach. The only reason it is not completely finished is that my husband said he thought the quilt deserved a wool batt and to be on our bed. I told him that would be expensive but he insisted, so I ordered one, but it hasn't come yet. The minute it does arrive, I will quilt and bind the quilt.

I can't believe it is this close to finished. I am ecstatic.

This was my one monthly goal for July,and my Ufo 2017 project, and I was afraid I would not get very far on it. I consider it a finish. Here I was at the beginning

I added a few gorgeous batiks to my stash. I don't have very many, I wasn't a big fan in my earlier quilt life, but there are beautiful quilts with them, and I want to give them a try. As a scrap quilter, I can't start using them until I have a big variety. So I add a few now and then.

I am hoping to get to the edge with my rug hooking project today.

Our guild speaker was Lisa Dobson from Martinsville Indiana. She is an art quilter. My favorite was this quilt called the Girl of the limberlost. This was one of my favorite books as a child written by an Indiana author Gene Stratton Porter.

Mill girls Last border

I have started working on the last border for Mill girls. I am soooo close. I have just now realized I would need to order a wool batting for it.It may not get here in time to finish by the end of the month. fingers crossed. I still might be counting my chickens before they are hatched since it is not even finished yet. The last border is actually 3 pieces , a 1 1/2 inch red tonal, a 3 1/2 inch floral and a fussy cut 7 1/2 inch blue strip with red on either side.
First I needed to square up the corners and sides as best as I could.

Actually it was pretty good, just little bits here and there that needed to go.

All the border pieces are together x 4. I really like the idea of building a border before adding it to the quilt. I think it is spectacular. I am really loving the quilt so far. When this border is added, it will need to be mitered in each corner.

Today is a one location shop hop in town. I am deciding whether or not to go. I don't shouldn't need to add anything to my burgeoning stuff, but I hate to miss anything. geesh I have added more fabric lately than I can handle - it's bad when it is still in the sack. But new pretties are calling out and I Can hear them.....

8 point star

In a box from the estate sale, I found 2 star blocks. and several sets of cut 45 degree diamonds. The seams and blocks are wonky. I can see why she didn't finish them.

I want to make an 8 pointed star with my string diamonds, so I thought I would use some of the pieces to practice.  This was mine. before the y seams. Aren't these fabrics a blast from the past? I still love them.

This was mine after the y seams. I think I can do it. I think it will be fun. I am thinking the trick is in the pressing and marking that silly dot to stop and backstitch.

I spent 15 minutes cutting up scrap treasures, using the 1 1/2 inch accuquilt strip die.

And yippee- I finished the box. I am sure more will grow in there overnight, but for now it is empty!

rug hooking again

whew - this set of borders is done and it is getting huge and heavy. I hope it is not so boring seeing pictures and more of the same. It is getting close to the end of the month, and I would like it finished for my one monthly goal. So I am really focusing on it. One final border to go.

I haven't been to my rug hooking group for most of the summer. I haven't felt energetic enough.  I have missed the ladies and the inspiration. It is no surprise, then, that I haven't done much with my rug hooking project. But Carol called and said they had missed me, and hoped I would be returning soon. Gee.. that felt nice. So I bucked up, rounded up my stuff and headed to rug hooking.

I have two borders on Mill girls. I needed to piece these using the monthly blocks that were made in the first months of the block of the month. The setting triangles were cut as part of month nine.
All the dark setting triangles are for the side towards the quilt. And the lights are for the outside edge.

New week, new border

I have the border on Star Gazing (quiltville), but it seems to be missing something. hmm... I added another row of blocks and it is more square than rectangle. I prefer a rectangle quilt. Which do you prefer? But it is big enough for a bed.

I have a few more box kite (quiltville) blocks done. I am having fun digging through my 2 1/2 inch squares for the centers.

In preparation for borders and squaring mill girls, I have been cleaning off my cutting table ..again.
When I measured for the borders for star gazing, I realized it had been a very long time since I have seen this much of the table top  lol. I had to document it.

Stash report July 23, 2017

My purchase this week is more about the machine than fabric. I have a new old Singer 401. Everything looks great on her. She needs a good cleaning and oiling and she will be running like a top.

I bought these blocks at the guild silent auction. The name of the fabric (Maypole) was included in the package. I looked online and was able to find a yard of the green in this line from Moda to buy for a border. It should make a cute lap size quilt.

I will be adding hexies to my hexie quilt for slow sunday stitching.

My goal for the rainbow scrap challenge this month was to get this quilt to the flimsy stage. I spent my time at small group getting it this far. I need to trim it up and decide on borders. The pattern is a crafty ol' broad pattern called Oh my stars. I think I have been calling it floating stars

I used a very soft blue for the quilt. I took a class with them through our quilt guild.

This is my friend's Linda O's farmer's wife and it is spectacular.She just got it back from her longarmer.

On Saturdays, I am trying to include string piecing into my day with my treadle sewing machine.
I have been working on 45 degree diamond string blocks. I blogged about cutting the papers here and covering the papers here

I've made progress.
I have enough done that I can start to think of creating a quilt with them. But it will have to wait it's turn.

I can't resist a glitter block or two while I am working. They are just like little mini quilts in and of themselves. This is a Jen Kingwell pattern from Quilt Lovely book.

And since all my box kite ( also Bonnie Hunter) blocks are cut, I enjoy throwing them in as leader/ enders while I am sewing. They are such fun. Since there are 120 blocks, I will be showing them for awhile.

I used my treadle to stitch the border together for Star gazing.I really enjoy the process of treadling. I knew it was not necessary to have this perfect, so it was an option. Although I do have a seam guide on it, I usually just string quilt so that I don't have to be sure it as accurate.

And I have the inner border of gold on star gazing. It certainly is not an away project any longer, too big, needs too much focus.  More about this here and here. So what will I take today to small group? I have several quilts that are ready for borders or assembling. I don't like taking those, and since I don't want to start something new, I will have to rummage through the project bins to find something that works away from home. And then I will be off on a new tangent.
