The last of my August one monthly goals for this year, is squeaking in just under the deadline. It was a mad dash to finish this quilt by the end of the month. I couldn't decide if I wanted to add borders or not. I added the borders. Then, I couldn't decide how I was going to do the binding. I haven't been as happy with machine stitching the bindings of late, so I was contemplating hand stitching again.

My Friday quilt group was meeting again, and I took it with me. I had the binding cut, but not sewn together. While at the group, I stitched and ironed the binding, machine stitched the binding to the top, and hand stitched the binding to the back for a finish. 

This is a ufo from 2014 and a trip to Florida. It is about 58 x 60 inches. I quilted it with bubbles, and used a sheet for the back.

 I have caught the postage stamp bug, and really can't concentrate on my other projects. I have 1 1/2 inch strips, but, very few 1 1/2 inch squares. I wasn't worried, because, I can cut squares from strips. My quilty friend was very supportive, and shared a zip lock bag of squares. It's always fun to see other quilter's fabrics. My plan was to grab a handful, and return the rest. She wouldn't take them back. haha.

My biggest challenge is having a solid strip long enough to do the whole block. As I cleaned my purple drawer, I discovered I had a few purples that would work.

Now, I am surprised at how many different shades of each color that I have. I obviously don't use many solids. This is a good exercise in getting to know them.

I can't believe how much I enjoy making psp 2020 blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge. It is late in the year for the challenge, so I am guessing, I will be doing these next year.

baby quilt finish

I have a baby quilt finish. It came to me nearly finished - only missing one border. I can't remember where I found it. I knew it would make a great donation quilt. Our guild donates to the police department for the the kids that are taken from bad situations. They often have only a brown paper sack to take with them. We also have a healthy family organization to which we donate.

It came with a piece big enough for the back. I must say, I like starting out like this, rather than from scratch. haha.

6 blocks had been embroidered very nicely. I really like the I love you fabric. That belongs in any baby quilt.

I brought this quilt out of storage, so that, I could finish it for PHD 2020, and, I looked for something purple for the rainbow scrap challenge.

In may, I had all the bunnies fused to the blocks, except these two. I couldn't do these, because, they needed to overlap the borders. I wasn't sure about the borders, so, I left them for a bit in time out.

Now, I have all the bunnies fused, and stitched around, and bordered. The pattern, I am loosely following calls for 2 inch squares as sashing. I am not sure, what I want, yet. I need to let it percolate a little.

My rug hooking group has started meeting again at the library. My husband is a great rug hooker, too. He spent some of his recovery from back surgery, working on this rug. It was a pattern that he had found as a small stitching pattern. He enlarged it, and drew it on linen. And, in case you can't see the resemblance, that is me watering the flowers. He did a wonderful job on the rug, and I love it. He dyed the sky and the yarn binding himself. 

Finishing this rug, was appropriate during a pandemic. It reminded us to seek for self reliance and virtue.

We have had great weather and have enjoyed outdoors, and, even found a monarch on our flower tubs. We have planted milkweed in our yard, but, it hasn't bloomed. What a surprise to see our own monarch butterfly.

I have spent the month cleaning and sorting my purple scraps as part of the rainbow scrap challenge this month.  I had an entire wire basket of scraps in that color. Apparently, it had been a long time since I sorted through and organized it. I certainly didn't think I had that many scraps.
I don't like the ironing part, but I do like the cutting part.

And this is all I have left in the basket. The rest, I decided to cut into useable sizes, guaranteeing that I won't have enough of the fabric I need for a project, should I find one. Good news - I found solid colors that were large enough to make strips for psp blocks.

I usually only cut strips in 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 3 1/2 inches. This time, I decided to cut charm squares and layer cakes. I have never used a layer cake, although, I own them. I am hoping, I will use them if they are not the fancy, sacred kind.

I am guessing there are at least 50 layer cakes squares and charm squares.

I am still working to finish up my kitted shoofly blocks. This was last year's leader/ ender from Quiltville. Just when, I think I am getting closer to finishing, I find more of the dreaded hsts. The blocks are 4 1/2 inches. and, Bonnie Hunter used 190 in her first quilt. She used sashing, and, I am not sure I want to do that. So, I will make however many I have the parts to make. And, that will be the size of the quilt....if I ever make them all.

purple projects

Today is Saturday, and the rainbow scrap challenge here. I had bigger chunks of purple scraps for the tiny houses. So, there are many repeats. I don't think I will mind in a big scrappy quilt.

 I finished the shine blocks in purple for another rainbow project.

I decided to look in the ufo closet for a purple ufo that I might could finish in August. I don't remember where I acquired this little baby quilt, but, I loved it. I am thinking, I picked it up at a quilt show garage sale. 

It had been embroidered and pieced, but, one of the borders was missing.

Luckily, it came with matching fabric.   All better...

Now, to see if I can get it quilted soon. I am afraid I am going to run out of Saturdays before I run out of purple projects.

Can I buy a vowel? This is the last of the words I need to join for my quote quilt. Now, I need to lay out all the words, and see if and how they will fit together to make a quilt. I'm scared it all won't fit. Oh, it will. geesh. I am just being a worry wart.

I am making this as part of my rainbow scrap challenge from last year. some of my letters here and here. Each month was a different color. I started putting the letters together into words this year.

I found this great tutorial here, and, I just had to try it. I used 8 charm squares that were just hanging around, and using a 4 patch method, I made 8 hour glass blocks. Now, I want to drop everything and make more.

We packed pbjs, and, after zoom church, went to seven pillars recreational area about 40 minutes north of us Sunday. It was someplace I had never been, and, I sure enjoyed the views and putting my feet in the water.

Straightening my sewing table, I found this little pile of pieces for my peaks and valley blocks or triangles in a square. I realized that I haven't sewn with these for awhile, and, I wanted to visit with them again. It looks like I was trying to make matches, and left them before I was finished.

 I am using a bloc loc template set that I bought awhile ago. more about the template here. I like using it, and the results are very accurate. The finished piece is 2 1/12 inches.

I sewed through a few of my kitted sets, trimmed, and combined them as webbed 9 patches

I used the webbed 9 patches as leader/enders for the next couple of days, and had stars made.

I found a box with fat quarter bundles that had been hiding under some scraps. I bought these before bluprint went out of business. I miss their coupon sales.

I was gifted a sack of fabrics yesterday, that I need to go through, otherwise, I have not acquired any new fabric from fabric stores in a while. I may not have any more room left for acquiring now that I have had isolation time to organize a bit.

Purple stars

Last week, I stopped getting comments in my email...again. It took me three days to figure it out and change my settings again. I was using the new blogger. Was anyone else having that problem?

I have collected little bits of triangles, mostly, for the shoofly leader/ ender from last year. The size I am making uses 1 1/2 inch hsts. I am getting very close to finishing all the blocks I have kitted for that quilt, so, I can, with great abandon, use these little bits in a few of my rainbow projects.... or get rid of them.

One of my rainbow projects this year, is my wonky stars. The little bits are perfect for them. I won't have enough blocks by the end of the year for a very big quilt, but, I don't think I want to do them again next year.

They are very cute ...

I searched through my ufo projects for a quick finish that might have purple in them. I found two, that I hope to sneak in and finish. This is an older ufo, pumpkin patch, that I have all the blocks made. I spread it out on the design bed. I can get the top finished in August, but, I have a longer list of customer quilts, so, that, I might not get it quilted. I'll see.

I hope you are up to some purple scrappiness and are well. I am so glad I have scraps to play with in these interesting times.

I have a finish for my one monthly goal and PHD 2020.

jamestown landing is a Bonnie Hunter pattern from her book string fling. It finished at 85 x 96 and used about 25 yards of scraps. I used a free motion swirl pattern on my longarm. I used my sewing machine to attach the binding.

I started this quilt in March 2013 in a class with Bonnie Hunter at the heritage quilt show in Bloomington Indiana. I put it on the top 2020 list of quilts I wanted to finish. And, I made it my goal for July to piece the top. And, my goal for August to finish it. My top 2020 list are those quilts that I would hate to see unfinished over my lifetime. I have way too many to choose from to add to the list. I am afraid I am a great starter, but, not finisher. This year, I have finished 14 ufos on the list. I chose this one, because, there was a lot of work already in the quilt that I really liked.
