5 quilt September 30, 2024

   last report September 2, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. My top priority this year are the quilts in the to be quilted closet.

It was a good month for finishing despite health issues. I was able to see some oldies finished. I didn't add to the quilting closet, so, hopefully, I will move the piecing and assembling along next month, but, I will be starting radiation and I don't know how that will affect me. Always an adventure.

I finished 4 ufos in September

I wanted to finish 2 quilts In the 'to be quilted closet' before I did any other UFOs. I did the two I planned for September. I finished....

1.cheddar jubilee  my one monthly goal for September is finished

2. garlic knots is finished

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1. umbrien fields is finished

2. dark strings is finished

3. halloween stripe runner is almost finished

4. scrappy twirl new in March -I just can't seem to take this quilt seriously. Maybe I should put it back in the box. But, no, I will not be intimidated,  I am leaving it on my design wall and will wait patiently for inspiration.

5. midnight flight - all the cheddar chain blocks are done. I am working on the red chain blocks. Finishing all the blocks will be my October one monthly goal. I hope I can have the big star blocks together, too, but I want to be cautious.

6. kaliedescope - mary huey workshop -ready for borders - lost really just lost - I am devastated

hen and chicks

I worked a little on hens and chicks for the rainbow scrap challenge.

I am recovering from a lumpectomy. My sewing time is limited. But, I am looking ahead to my 2025 goals. And, I am doing well. These beautiful flowers are from my son in Florida. He even remembered my favorite flowers.

cheddar jubillee finish

cheddar jubilee is finished and is my one monthly goal for September.

This is an older ufo from 2017. I made many of the sampler blocks in that year. After I assembled the top, I lost it until I found it misplaced in 2024. I was finally able to add it to the 5 quilt project, and work on it until it is finished. This combines my favorite color - yellow, my favorite kind of scrappy, my favorite recycled shirts, and my favorite string piecing. And I was a big fan of Bonnie Hunter. Thinking I had lost this forever has made this a very satisfying finish.

kaleidoscope border

I have the border beyond the blocks added to my kaleidoscope quilt. The center is finished.  I just really like the circle effect as a secondary pattern. There is no curve piecing just shading. It is the focus right now for the 5 quilt project. I started it in 2016.

I am trying to add a final set of blocks to the border that I can cut into a straight edge for finishing.

more midnight flight sewing

I have made progress on my midnight flight Ufo

I have 72 required yellow chain blocks done. I started the red chain blocks at my open sew. And I was able to make 10. It was a challenge to re- train my brain for a different placement of the same pieces. There are 22 pre sewn pieces in each quadrant block.

stash report September 22, 2024

I was gifted an interesting bag of scraps from a quilty friend. Digging through, there were orphan blocks and tiny scraps and hunky scraps all very different. It was overwhelming. This was the first hunk I pulled out of the bag. I plan on searching through this and making decisions before I dig out any more.

gray rows

I dug out my gray and black 2 1/2 inch strips and cut for 2 rows of Jos checkers.

And, I made 2 rows, and I am considering this quilt project done for making blocks. I may still use the rest of the year to sew rows together for the rainbow scrap challenge.

We have a new roof in progress. So glad I am not doing it. haha

garlic knots finish

I blogged about garlic knots when I re- started it as part of my 5 quilt ufo project. I had made all the blocks in 2017 from the free pattern in quiltmaker magazine. Bonnie Hunter went on the create a stand alone pattern. Garlic knots  was a puzzle to make with the sashings extending into 2 rows. I am thrilled with how it finished.  I love all the scrappy combinations of the garlic knots and remember many of the fabrics I used. I made it with my scrap bags of 2 inch strips. and the border from 1 1/2 inch strips.

74 x 86 = 24 yards

2888 pieces

just a little piecing

Sometimes I just play. It seems to start with a frustrated clean up around my sewing room. But, then, it is so fun that I start wandering from little project to little project. I have been really concentrating on finishing ufos this year with an emphasis on emptying my 'to be quilted' closet. I haven't just played with scrap pieces.

I found a baggy of of 2 1/2 inch squares in sewn sets of 2.

I hadn't sewn any shirt snails trail in a while, so I started 5 more.

I found enough scraps to make 2 5 1/2 inch monkey wrench blocks from odd colors. And 2 little beauty baskets.

The room is still a mess, but, I had a few moments of soothing piecing. I am pondering next year and how to downsize my quilting stash. I like to piece, but, I don't really need to start anything new. Yet, I miss the enthusiasm of a new project. Luckily, I still have ufos that will be interesting.

Kaleidoscope center

I have the center finished for my kaleidoscope quilt. I have an idea for the border, I just have to work out the sequence. I wasn't sure I was going to see the magic of the quilt, until, the center was together. I love it so far. I already want to do another, but, I have to remember I started with almost everything done as an older ufo. So, it won't be as easy as it seems now.

stash report September 15, 2024

A quilty friend gifted me a little bag of scrappy squares that were so fun to dig through and pet. I like that it is a little glimpse into their quilting world.

fabric added this week: 0 yards

fabric added year to date for 2024: 72 yards

fabric used:  - 14 yards - dark strings is finished -new

fabric used year to date for 2024: 506 yards

441 yards used more than bought in 2024

I sewed 4 days last week.

Hubby and I attended a quilt show in Pendleton Indiana that was hanging in a museum of history of the that town. The quilts were lovely to look at, but, I am always intrigued by the museum as well. Off the beaten path of the quilt show was a stunning beauty I just had to stop and admire. I can't believe how amazing this quilt was. It was incredible.

I didn't touch, but my fingers give perspective of the size of the tiny squares.

ripple blocks

I haven't had much sewing machine time this week. I did cut gray for Jos checkers. And, I made orange ripple blocks. I will try to sew black this month and brown next month. I have all the 4 patches sewn for the sashings on my baby 30s project. I am not making any more traffic jam blocks this year. I have kept up with the cutting for monkey wrench blocks, but, have fallen behind in the sewing. I'm done with the blocks I needed for the windmill quilt.

Now, that I am finishing up the blocks I had planned for the year, I need to decide if I put them away or work to finish them. I picked easy projects for the year to finish, but, I feel I really want to continue with the hens and chicks. With my tiny tuesday sampler from 2019, I didn't finish out the year, and will need to continue with blocks if I want to finish it. It is harder to do later. But, there is something about this time of year that I want to be done. I will also have surgery next week.

dark strings finish

Since this quilt was made before I was blogging, I don't have many notes or pictures of the beginning. I know I started it in 2014 and the pattern was in a book called string quilt revival. I added it to the 5 quilt project in July 2024. It was in a project box, but it was ready to be quilted - happy surprise.

I really like string quilts and I know it was pieced on my people powered treadle machine while I was watching tv. I bet the early treadlers couldn't say that. I have a wonderful treadle that sews almost as fast as a powered machine. I haven't used it this year or pieced strings and I am missing it.

I liked the pattern because the picture used black and civil war fabrics. I didn't, and, I really like the bright contrast with black. And it is so nice to make use of the small bits.

finally a use for the animal print😃

tiny tuesday

I opened a new ufo project box to look ahead to what I might need to do to finish this quilt from 2019.

It was a sampler quilt as a QAL for the rainbow scrap challenge group. It looks like I did not make the blocks from october, november, and december of that year. And, I haven't framed all of the blocks. I look forward to playing with this project. I will have to go back to all the directions to see what I was doing. I am pulling this out since my big piecing project ( midnight flight) is a little boring. The rest of the 5 quilts are either at borders or quilting and waiting their turn.

starting midnight flight

oh my! a new puzzle.  This is the project box for an older UFO from 2016 called midnight flight from the quiltville book 'more adventures with leaders and enders'.  All the pieces to build the blocks are cut and pieced including the border pieces. Which include 218 red 4 patches and 218 cheddar 4 patches, 288 hsts b&w, 288 blade pieces, and 148 border blades ( half leaning right and half leaning left). What was I thinking when I cut this out. The next step is to build 72 cheddar quadrants and 72 red quadrants. It is now part of the 5 quilt project. Let the fun begin.

I made a small start on the cheddar quadrants which include 21pieces.
